Berthoud sits at 5,030 feet elevation along Colorado's northern Front Range, receiving over 250 days of sunshine annually. The surrounding campgrounds typically close during winter months except for Carter Lake and St. Vrain State Park, which maintain year-round operations. Summer temperatures average 85°F during day with cool 50°F nights, creating ideal camping conditions from May through September.
What to do
Wildlife viewing at sunrise/sunset: At St. Vrain State Park Campground, early mornings offer prime wildlife spotting opportunities. "My friends and I love this campground! Numerous ponds, stocked ponds, trails, biking, birds, paddle boarding. The view of the mountains is to die for!" reports Kate B. Bird enthusiasts should bring binoculars for bald eagle sightings.
Fishing at multiple stocked ponds: The fishing at Pinewood Reservoir Campground offers a quieter alternative to larger lakes. "Non-motorized small boats allowed and there is an easy hiking trail around the lake," notes Cee G. Anglers report rainbow trout as the primary catch, with fishing best in early morning hours.
Hiking the reservoir loop trails: Carter Lake features several shoreline trails with moderate terrain suitable for all ages. The 3-mile loop at Pinewood Reservoir provides consistent lake views without significant elevation gain. "Nice trail (around a 3 mile loop). Gets windy," warns Jamie H. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes as trails can be rocky in sections.
What campers like
Spacious electric sites: South Shore Campground at Carter Lake receives consistent praise for its well-maintained spaces. "Sites were well maintained and level. Good separation. Close proximity to lake and easy access. Wild turkey sitings," notes Larry E. Most sites include 30/50-amp service with gravel pads that accommodate most RV sizes.
Privacy between campsites: The layout at many Berthoud-area campgrounds prioritizes spacing. "Large gravel pull through spot (as were all of the sites on this loop), with a picnic table and fire pit. Some trees around this site providing shade on both sides... Also enough foliage between sites to give a feeling of privacy," explains Teah S. about Carter Lake's South Shore.
Proximity to shopping: Boulder County Fairgrounds offers urban convenience while maintaining natural surroundings. "We needed a place to sleep while a parent was in the hospital. We were in the middle of a roadtrip so we had a big camper plus a trailer. We didn't need amenities so it was only $15/night," reports Cindy L. Most supplies can be found within a 10-minute drive.
What you should know
Reservation-only camping: Many parks near Berthoud require advance booking, especially during summer months. Boyd Lake State Park switched to reservation-only in January 2019. "Though they had open sites I could not reserve them without using the booking system, which consequently charges a service charge for booking," explains Crystal C.
Additional vehicle fees: Most Larimer County campgrounds charge per-vehicle entrance fees beyond the camping fee. "This made the nightly rate a lot higher than what it was worth," notes one reviewer about Horsetooth Reservoir. Daily vehicle passes typically cost $7-10 per vehicle in addition to camping fees.
