Best RV Parks & Resorts near Joshua Tree National Park

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several RV parks surround Joshua Tree National Park, offering varying levels of amenities and hookup options. Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground provides full hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp electrical service, located on Sunfair Road in Joshua Tree with easy access to the park's north entrance. "We got there and were told to just find a spot. We started to back into a spot and began hooking up but realized the power isn't working," noted one visitor about a different nearby resort, highlighting the importance of checking connections upon arrival. Emerald Desert RV Resort in Palm Desert accommodates large motorhomes with spacious pull-through RV pads on level terrain, while Thousand Trails Palm Springs features both 30 and 50 amp full hookup sites with seasonal availability from September to May. Shadow Hills RV Resort in Indio maintains well-groomed sites with electric, water, and sewer connections year-round.

Reservations are essential during peak winter and spring months when snowbirds flock to desert RV parks. Many resorts near Joshua Tree feature amenities specifically designed for motorhome travelers, including sanitary dump stations, propane service, and swimming pools. According to one camper, "Our 30ft RV had no issues pulling into the area," though navigating within the national park campgrounds can be challenging for larger rigs. Cell service varies throughout the region, with stronger coverage at private RV resorts and potentially weaker signals within the national park boundaries. Pets are permitted at most private RV parks surrounding Joshua Tree, though additional pet fees may apply. Sites equipped with concrete pads typically provide more stability for larger motorhomes compared to the sand or gravel surfaces found at some facilities.

    Thousand Trails Palm Springs

    Lovely TT RV Resort!!!

The is a beautiful Thousand Trails RV Resort in Palm Springs, California! The park is large, very spacious and so clean! The gorgeous Palm trees are a little bit of a parking hazard, but they were here before we were! 😊 And besides, they are so beautiful to look at every day. The park feels like a day on beach with white sand to park on in most spaces, towering Palm trees, and brightly colored tropical flowers. What a treat in the winter! We are here in November and December and daytime high’s are in the low 80’s. The park is split in half with one side 30 amp FHU and the other half 50 amp FHU. For TT members, there is not an additional charge for 50 amp. Quite a deal! There is plenty of room to get out and walk in this park, along with a nice dog park, playground, billiards room, swimming pool and spa, horseshoes, 8 pickle ball courts, many laundry rooms and restrooms, and community recreation room. The surrounding mountains ranges are pretty amazing, too. This park is close to it all in the Palm Springs area and everything is within a short drive. Joshua Tree National Park and the Salton Sea is just over a half hour away. The Thousand Trails Palm Springs RV Resort is perfect and we will definitely be visiting again!

    Sportsman’s Club

    Sportsman’s Club, CA

Located in Twentynine Palms California, the campground is only ten minutes away from Joshua Tree National Park. The sites are flat. It’s essentially a dirt parking lot with hook ups. The host was nice and accommodating. They provide firewood for purchase and all the WiFi information upon arrival. The property is gated which made us feel safer at night. We thought it was costly for what the park provided, but understand the location is what makes it more expensive. Convenient and close to the main road!

Cottonwood Campground — Joshua Tree National Park

    Very nice but small sites

I really liked this campground. It’s one of the campground inside Joshua Tree NP and reservable through Recreation.gov. The sites are very private but they are small. Both the pull through and back in sites are small so this is definitely not for big rigs. We had A19 which is a pull through on the right side of the road and we had to go into the gravel part of the site so we would be in enough to open our driver side slide out. And we ended up pretty slanted as a result, but it fit. There are flush toilets that are very clean. This side of the park is very nice but most of the action is north of here and so we’re an hour drive to a lot of the hikes we want to do. No cell service at all.

    Shadow Hills RV Resort

    Urban Glamping during Covid

Shadow Hills RV Resort is a stellar urban RV resort with all the amenities. Full hookups, daily trash pickups at each site, cable tv, large level pads with privacy hedge, small dog parks scattered throughout, gated security, nice restrooms w/ showers (free). We were visiting family who were just a short bike ride away. Can be extremely windy here. Desert X environmental art installations are nearby.

    Thousand Trails Palm Springs

    Concrete Condo Camping

A well managed, well-kept park. Plenty of 50-amp sites, which usually means BIG rigs, are all back-in. The mature date palms and tight sites makes parking and manuevering diffecult for big rigs. Very lively community; lots of people out, kid playing. Proximity to Interstate 10 and railroad tracks makes it a bit noisy. But, it's NOT too bad. Plenty of TV stations along with 5G cell service. It's not in the rules so, I believe I'm allowed to wash my rig.

Hidden Valley Campground — Joshua Tree National Park

Boost Oxygen at Hidden valley Campground

    Campground review

Similar to all campgrounds in Joshua Tree National Park, it's hard to get a camp site, unless you come midweek or come off-season when it gets hot (mid-may through September). The availability is the reason for not rating this site with a full 5 stars. Otherwise this campground is great. Each site comes with a picnic table and fire pit. There are vault toilets but no running water. This campground is the only one in the park that has a an emergency phone line, which is necessary given lack of cell service. Payment of sites is self service with envelopes at campground board. This campground is extremely convenient for the nearby classic trad routes. There are also many bouldering problems in the campground itself, and many more just a short walk away.

    Gear review

One of the great parts of being a Ranger for The Dyrt is testing awesome new products from time to time - on this trip I was testing Boost Oxygen. I'd never used sports oxygen before trying this product, so I'm playing around with all the different potential uses. I ordered the flavorless kind and all three flavors in order to try them all. My personal favorite is the menthol-eucalyptus. My friends and I were using Boost throughout our climbing trip. At first assessment: they're fun. We weren't sure what to expect in terms of effects, but we got a major kick out these canisters. We found every opportunity to boost some extra Oxygen - before bed for recovery during sleep, to wake up in the morning, after running around, in between climbs, etc. The flavors really add to the experience. I found the effects to be more noticeable in the immediate sense, like getting a shot of alertness when groggily waking up in the morning or when feeling winded right after exercise. Sometimes I experienced it as a very subtle and brief tingling after taking a few bursts of Boost. Long term effects were less obvious to me, and I didn't notice any clear muscle recovery effects. One final nice feature is that the canisters are extremely light weight - because it's oxygen! So it doesn't add any weight to day packs, which is especially nice if you want to bring some for long hikes, especially at high altitudes. Check it out: https://www.boostoxygen.com

    Chiriaco Summit Dry Camp Area

    Great free camping spot

There are no bathrooms or water here, but you have cell service and a convenience store very close by. This is a great spot to find a free camping site and still be somewhat in your own seclusion. The sky is really nice here at night. You can see the freeway a bit of a distance out from this location and it takes about 45mins or so get back into Joshua tree National park from here. The fire pits are in the ground so you might have to rebuild the walls above ground if they’ve been knocked down. Overall a very cool spot to check out that’s right outside of Joshua tree National park with beautiful sunset views. This is BLM land

    Catalina Spa and RV Resort

Nice place, good value for money

Great for long term RV camping with hookups. They have nice hot springs pools, decent cell signal, and reasonable prices for full hookups. Camp sites are on the small side so neighbors are close, but at least they put plants in between to give you a little privacy.

Guide to Joshua Tree National Park

Desert RV parks near Joshua Tree National Park provide year-round options at elevations ranging from 1,100 to 2,800 feet. The desert climate creates dramatic temperature variations between seasons, with summer daytime temperatures regularly exceeding 100°F while winter nights can drop below freezing. Most parks maintain open status September through May, with reduced amenities during summer months.

What to do

Sunrise photography at Joshua Tree Lake: This campground offers exceptional dawn photography opportunities with unobstructed desert views. "This is the most beautiful place to watch sunrise and sunset and stars. So peaceful," notes a visitor at Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground.

Hot spring soaking: Natural mineral pools provide therapeutic relaxation after desert exploration. At Catalina Spa and RV Resort, the pools maintain consistent temperatures around 90°F. "Upper section is exposed to the frequent high winds. Lower section is blocked by trees and bushes which block you from your neighbors. Lower mineral pool is more adult friendly," reports one camper.

Desert art installations: Located near several RV parks, environmental art displays offer cultural experiences alongside camping. "Desert X environmental art installations are nearby," mentions a visitor at Shadow Hills RV Resort.

What campers like

Spacious RV sites: Many parks feature extra-large sites that accommodate slide-outs and towed vehicles. "Amazing new RV Park. Amazing staff. Amazing HUGE sites. Clean. Lots of planned activities. Great for families. Excellent for big rigs of any size," reports a guest at Coachella Lakes RV Resort.

Multi-use recreation areas: Beyond standard amenities, several parks offer expanded activities. "We've been here for about 4 weeks... Staff is outstanding. We've enjoyed learning and playing pickleball. The pools are warm and well maintained," shares a camper at Catalina Spa and RV Resort.

Dark sky stargazing: Limited light pollution creates exceptional astronomy opportunities. "We booked and traveled here to show the kids the stars from a desert view, and it did not disappoint! My camera couldn't capture the magnificent view from just our site," explains a visitor at Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground.

What you should know

Wind conditions: Strong desert winds affect campsite selection and setup. "The weekly rate is much better than daily. It is a nice resort with clean amenities. The gym was great and the pool was not busy which made it a nice place to work from. The main downside is it is near the train tracks, which runs often," reports a guest at Emerald Desert RV Resort.

Water quality concerns: Some parks utilize well water with mineral content. One camper notes: "Most important to note the water is NOT SAFE to drink or cook with due to excessive arsenic and fluoride. There are however 3 locations in the park with reverse osmosis filters to fill water jugs."

Seasonal availability: Many parks operate limited schedules. "Park is seasonal and not open year round," mentions a visitor about Thousand Trails Palm Springs.

Tips for camping with families

Pool access schedules: Family-oriented pools may have designated hours. "Staff is very friendly and hard working. They ran an easily accessible store on the campgrounds that had lots of last minute necessities. Not to mention the ducks!" shares a visitor at Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground.

Pet-friendly considerations: Most parks welcome pets with specific amenities. At Thousand Trails Palm Springs, "There's a pool, laundry facilities, family lodge, and a camp store. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the sites are super super close together. We were there the weekend before Easter and they did an Easter Egg hunt so that was super fun."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Desert wildlife creates educational moments for children. "There is a nice little pond with lots of birds that my daughter loved. It's out of the town which we like but not far from the Joshua Tree entrance to the park and lots of coffee shops."

Tips from RVers

Electrical connection testing: Verify hookups immediately upon arrival. Several campgrounds feature 30-amp and 50-amp options but connection quality varies by site. A visitor recommends: "Clean sites with 30 and 50 amp. Daily weekly monthly."

Wind protection strategies: Select sites based on natural windbreaks. "I would give this 5 stars if we had been given the option to move to one of the tent sites that had more of a wind block. Instead the campground was pretty empty but they put us at the back of the campground completely exposed to the wind," explains a camper at Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground.

Extended stay rates: Monthly rates provide significant discounts. "We spent 2 weeks here. The weekly rate is much better than daily. It is a nice resort with clean amenities," suggests a visitor at Emerald Desert RV Resort.
