Best Pet-Friendly Camping Near DeGray Lake

DeGray Lake dog-friendly campgrounds span a wide range of options, from full-hookup RV and cabin sites to primitive pet-friendly campsites for as little as $10 per night. Edgewood Campground provides water and electric hookups for pet owners in tent and RV sites that overlook the lake. Arlie Moore and Caddo Drive campgrounds also accommodate pets with lakeside access and picnic tables at each site. The larger sites at Lake Catherine State Park and Gulpha Gorge Campground in Hot Springs National Park accept pets in cabins and RV sites with full hookups. Horse flies can be problematic during summer months, particularly at Edgewood where they've been known to bother both campers and their dogs during walks.

Most DeGray Lake pet-friendly campsites require pets to remain leashed throughout the camping areas. Ozan Point offers more secluded, primitive camping with pets for only $10 per night from March through October, featuring fully shaded sites that provide cool relief during hot summer days. Tent sites 21-24 at Edgewood are positioned extremely close together, making them better suited for groups traveling with pets rather than those seeking privacy. Crystal Springs Campground near Lake Ouachita allows pets with access to boat-in camping options. For safety, campers should check their pets regularly for ticks, especially at Edgewood where visitors have reported finding them on both themselves and their dogs. The surrounding wildlife includes deer, armadillos, squirrels and chipmunks, which might interest leashed pets during morning and evening walks.

DeGray Lake Resort State Park — De Gray State Park

    We had a blast!

This weekend we camped at DeGray Lake Resort State Park in Bismarck, Arkansas. We had a blast! DeGray Lake has a lot to offer for groups large and small wanting to get away. It has several camping spaces with water and electric hook ups (about $22/night), yurts (about $55/night), a lodge (about $100/night), a marina to rent boats or buy bait, several daily activities for children or adults of all ages (some free and some about $5-15/person), horse riding stables (no experience required, about $30/ride 1 hour trail), a full golf course, playgrounds, pavilions, overall clean facilities, and a restaurant. Although our bank fishing experience wasn’t so great, I’m sure with a boat it would have been better. And for those that want to make the camping trip into the ultimate family vacation, this park is about a 30 minute drive from Hot Springs, AR where there is tons to do like restaurants, mini golf, shopping, and we even decided to get ice cream at Scoops (24 homemade flavors and delicious)! We will definitely be back for a visit!!

    Edgewood

    Corps camping on Lake DeGray

Smaller than its neighbor Caddo, and with a swim beach. The sites vary in length and width, as well as desirability. The concrete ones generally seem nicer than the asphalt ones. The campsites at nearby DeGray Lake Resort State Park are much more built out with wooden edging around large pads, whereas at the COE campgrounds you get a simpler setup of table, pole, and parking. If State Park isn’t full I would choose it instead.

DeGray Lake Resort State Park — De Gray State Park

    Calm lake

DeGray Lake is very pretty, and calm. The sunrise and sunsets are serene. This is a very laid back area to camp. The trails are far from challenging, and the Park Rangers are very helpful

    Iron Mountain

    Beautiful Lake View

This park is run by the US army corps engineering. It is located around Degray Lake and is one of many there. I would definitely recommend this park for boaters. There is electric and water. The water is a bit of a pain to use because you have to twist the top to open but it doesnt stay on. It made it hard to wash dishes or your hands. There is a picnic table, fire ring, grill and table top next to the grill. The facilities were nice, there are toilets and showers.

    Catherine's Landing

    Very Nice, Lots of Amenities

Catherine’s Landing is a great RV park with lots of amenities and things happening. This park is an RVC Outdoor Destination property which is known for their “resort” amenities. The park is set on 400 acres with one mile bordering Lake Catherine and about eight or nine miles from downtown Hot Springs.

All roads, sites and patios are paved and this is definitely a big rig-friendly park. Every site has water, 50/30 amp, sewer, cable, and wifi. Fire pits and picnic tables accompany all sites. There are a variety of sites ranging from waterfront back-in, pull-thrus, or interior back-in. Waterfront sites have a nice view of the lake from the back of the site and access for fishing. The park also has yurts and cottages (some of which are pet-friendly). Adjacent to the yurts is a nice, large covered picnic area with grills, a dish washing station.

Lots and lots of amenities here. Hiking trails, swimming pool, fitness center, lounge, playground, dog park, zip-line, boat rental, boat launch, store, and disc golf. Some amenities (boat rentals and zip-line) are an extra charge.

Hot Springs is a nice little town nestled in the Ouachita Mountains with interesting history and natural beauty. We found plenty to do from hiking the National Park to learning about the bathhouse history to discovering the gangster influence. We spent four nights and could have stayed longer with all that the town offers. Most people come here to bathe in the soothing warm mineral waters but there is also a horse racetrack, science museum, off road track, water/theme park, alligator farm, and a few museums. Hot Springs National Park has miles and miles of great hiking trails and a great place to spend an afternoon. The town of Hot Springs is very dog-friendly and we found many places that would allow them in and on the patio for lunch.

    Pros:

    • Very nice, clean, well-manicured
    • Lots of amenities
    •  Paved level sites with paved patios
    • The dog park was a decent size for running and mingling with other dogs
    • The hiking trail(about 3 miles) was a big plus and got used a lot.

    Cons:

    • Price. We booked late and didn’t have too many sites to choose from we had to pay for a waterfront site

COE Degray Lake Iron Mountain Campground

Great location to access the mountain biking and hiking trails

This campground is more rustic than the other COE campgrounds I have stayed in at Degray Lake. It has two different options one near the lake and the one in reviewing which is up on a bluff overlooking the lake. This one is higher up so harder to actually access the lake but very convenient to the Degray COE visitors center and the mountain biking trails and hiking trails. This campground is more mountainous with lake views than the other Degray COE parks. There’s a marina nearby. Campground has electric but not water hookups and clean, rustic bathhouses with hot showers.

Guide to DeGray Lake

DeGray Lake spans 13,400 acres with 207 miles of shoreline in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains. Water temperatures range from 50°F in winter to 85°F in summer, creating distinct seasonal camping experiences. The lake sits at 408 feet above sea level with pine-hardwood forests dominating the surrounding terrain.

What to do

Mountain biking: Iron Mountain trail system provides dedicated trails adjacent to the Iron Mountain campground. "The Iron Mountain trail system is adjacent to the campground. I love the rustic simplicity of the place. It is older but well maintained and clean."

Kayaking: Lake Catherine offers excellent paddling opportunities with minimal boat traffic. "It's a great lake for kayaking as the water was calm and there were only a couple of boats on the water," notes a visitor to Lake Catherine State Park Campground.

Disc golf: DeGray Lake area includes courses for disc golf enthusiasts. "We made a short drive over to DeGray Lake where they have a disc golf course," reports a camper who stayed at Iron Mountain.

Fishing: Multiple access points around the lake provide opportunities for anglers. At Arlie Moore - De Gray Lake, one visitor noted, "Fish was biting and enjoy our time."

What campers like

Waterfront sites: Direct lake access at Arlie Moore campground. "Tent and RV + boating and fishing. Camping is diverse enough to be in a the forest or on the lake. Water is warm and I swim less than 20 feet from my tent."

Wildlife viewing: Bald eagles and other animals can be spotted throughout the area. At Caddo Drive, visitors appreciate the "Beautiful and Peaceful place on Degray Lake with mountains as a back drop. Lots of wildlife and very peaceful; the Bald Eagles are an extra treat."

Quiet atmosphere: Several campgrounds offer secluded settings away from crowds. Big Fir Primitive Camping provides "Flat land on a Lake Peninsula secluded from nearly everyone! And even the few other campers that did arrive were barely noticeable!"

Hiking trails: Varied terrain presents options for different skill levels. At Crystal Springs Campground, one camper noted "Incredible hiking all around you. Campground is secluded and quite."

What you should know

Site levelness varies significantly: Many campsites require substantial leveling efforts. At Edgewood, "Some of the sites are very unlevel" while at Iron Mountain "Some sites are very level and some are more challenging to level your RV."

Limited cell service: Coverage can be spotty depending on location. Crystal Springs campers report "Cell service (Verizon) was very good, picked up a good number of tv stations on regular TV."

Site proximity: Some camping areas have very close quarters. At Edgewood, "tent pad 22 is one of 4 in a grouping of tent sites. 21-24 are so close together. If you are with friends or a large family group then it would be ideal."

Primitive options available: For those seeking minimal amenities at lower cost. At Big Fir, "be advised that the bathroom is a pit toilet situation with absolutely no running water. Fires are permitted, and the grounds are monitored fairly frequently."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Catherine's Landing offers extensive child-friendly amenities. "Kid friendly. Great upkeep and sites that are easily accessible. Playground, splash pad, and pool."

Swimming areas: Designated beaches provide safer water entry. Arlie Moore has "great places to go with the family and get away. Campsites are average, access to water is great, swimming is great, shade from the sun is great."

Ranger programs: Educational activities available at some parks. Lake Ouachita State Park offers "ranger programs, educational displays, swimming beach, cabins and traditional tent/RV camping."

Tick prevention: Perform regular checks during summer months. At Edgewood, some visitors "got ticks on us and so did our dogs" while camping.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Service levels vary widely between campgrounds. At Iron Mountain, "They're all electric hookup only. Dump station near the entrance station. Fill up fresh water before you get there."

Dog friendly campgrounds DeGray Lake: Several locations welcome pets with varying amenities. Lake Catherine offers "nice, shady, level sites with full hook-ups" where pets are permitted.

Winter water shutoffs: Plan accordingly for cold weather camping. At Caddo Drive - De Gray Lake, "You do need to fill your fresh water tank before arrival if visiting this time of year because the water is turned off."

Site selection strategy: Research carefully before booking. "If you're looking for a more resort situation there's a lovely state park with full hookups approximately 10 minutes away. If you prefer a great place to stay with electricity then this is your place."
