The region includes established RV resorts like Desert View RV Resort and Needles KOA, as well as mixed-use campgrounds that accommodate tents, RVs, and cabins. Pirate Cove and Fenders River Road Resort offer waterfront camping with cabin options approximately 3-5 miles from downtown Needles. For those seeking more primitive experiences, Craggy Wash Dispersed Camping Area provides free camping about 30 miles northwest in Arizona. "This would be our first stop as a RV camper. KOA in Needles CA and I would have to say we loved it! Friendly staff, nice clean swimming pool, and the amenities and facilities clean," noted one visitor. The extreme desert climate significantly impacts camping conditions, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 110°F from June through September. Winter months (October-April) provide more moderate temperatures ideal for camping. Many campgrounds remain open year-round despite the heat, though visitors during summer should prepare for extremely hot conditions. Water access is a critical consideration, as most established campgrounds provide hookups while dispersed sites require campers to bring their own supply. Cell service varies throughout the region, with stronger signals near town and more limited coverage in outlying areas.

Several visitors mentioned the Colorado River access as a primary attraction for camping in this area. Campgrounds along the river offer swimming, boating, and fishing opportunities that provide relief from the desert heat. A camper wrote, "The sites are kinda tight but well worth it if you can get a river view! Dog friendly with a nice dog beach." Public lands near the city support a range of camping styles from fully-developed resorts to primitive sites with no facilities. Campers report high satisfaction with sites near the Colorado River, though many note the importance of stocking up on supplies before arrival as services in Needles are limited. Reviews consistently mention the stark beauty of the desert landscape, wildlife viewing opportunities including wild burros, and the exceptional stargazing conditions due to minimal light pollution in the surrounding desert.

    Havasu BLM Dispersed

    Mile marker 174

There are two major turnoffs within a mile of each other. The northern one at about mile 175 is more suited for very large rigs as it is flat with plenty of room to park. At mile 174, where I stayed there is more ability to off road into the hills allowing for more separation from other campers. Both sites are pretty busy.

    Blankenship Wash Dispersed

Great Basecamp for all things Lake Havasu

This is located just 9 short mile from the city. It has a variety of terrain and spots. You can bring a trailer as there were several open spots to pull thru on as long as your rig can handle sandy wash. The more off road capable you are the further back you can go where there are less people. I did see 2 camps that were more likely homeless vs. travelers. The area seemed clean. I went back into the way about a mile and found a nice elevated spot out of the wash. I stayed in 2wd. It was 90° in November

    Buckskin Mountain State Park Campground

    Nice park in the river

Spent one night here. The spaces were nice and wide. I feel $50 for a state park is a little bit expensive. And the water tasted funny. The showers were older but clean. Nice hiking trails in the area.

    Havasu BLM Dispersed

Easy access and close to town

Basic camping area right off the highway. Only minutes from town. No amenities. Pack it in, and pack it out.

    Windy Point Campground

    Beautiful campground BEWARE of road

One of the most beautiful places we’ve stayed. We came in on the 9 mile route and came down on the 11 mile road. Both roads required AWD/high clearance. I’m When we came down (Oct 2025) the 11 mile route also required off road tires and lots of skill. A storm blew through a couple of weeks prior and did some damage. Pretty sure BLM would have had the gate closed if the govt wasn’t shut down.

Cottonwood Cove Campground — Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Great for access to lake Mohave

Beware you also need to pay entry to Lake Meade recreational area. View from campsite itself isn’t great, mostly gravel hills, but the campground is a short walk from the lovely lake Mohave. Campground has clean, flush toilets. Some issues with rusty/dirty drinking water taps and animal faeces in some of the pitches. Overall fairly basic for the cost

Hole In The Wall Campground — Mojave National Preserve

If you visit the mojave desert visit this campsite!

Gorgeous location, and a spacious quiet campsite. Great for stargazing! There are drop toilets which are very clean and plenty of drinking water near every site. There is a great 0.5mile walk to a visitor centre which has lots of info and wifi. If you visit ensure you enter through the road from the south - it has tarmac. The north road to enter is 15miles of washboard so is somewhat unsuitable for 2 wheel drive car

    Hualapai Mountain Park

    Awesome hiking location

Beautiful spot up in the mountains. Spacious sites with very clean toilets and access to awesome range of hikes that you can walk to from your site. Rangers were great - keep a look for Bigfoot!! Only drawback is we couldn’t find any drinking water.
