Best Tent Camping near Encampment, WY

The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest surrounding Encampment, Wyoming provides rustic tent camping opportunities on public lands with minimal development. Foote Public Access Area offers designated tent sites along the North Platte River, while Sanger Public Access Area provides primitive walk-in tent locations with riverside access. Medicine Bow dispersed camping areas feature drive-in and walk-in tent sites that require no reservations but do need a permit for overnight stays.

Most tent campsites in the region have dirt or gravel surfaces with minimal site improvements. Potable water is not available at any of the public access areas, requiring campers to bring sufficient water supplies. Pit toilets are present at Foote Public Access Area but absent at most other locations. Fire regulations vary seasonally, with Medicine Bow allowing fires while other areas may restrict them during dry periods. High clearance vehicles are recommended for accessing certain primitive tent locations, particularly after rain when dirt access roads become muddy or rutted.

Tent campers frequently find secluded spots along the North Platte River which provide both scenic views and fishing opportunities. "There are a few sandy campsites by the Platte River - had we gotten there earlier, we could have parked on the river's rocky shore," one camper noted about Foote Public Access Area. Most walk-in tent sites remain uncrowded during weekdays, though holiday weekends see increased activity. Insect pressure can be significant near water sources, with mosquitoes particularly prevalent at riverside tent locations during summer months. Wildlife sightings are common, with campers reporting mink, eagles, and elk at various walk-in tent campsites throughout the region. Sites provide little natural shade, exposing tent campers to both sunlight and occasional strong winds.

    Rob Roy Campground

Prepare for 3 Ws- Water, weather, & wildlife.

This wooded campground has a very narrow season. Gravel roads (starting at Albany) were snowed in 4 miles out in late May 2019, While there are gendered vault toilets (TP stocked), bring your own water for cooking and cleaning. This fact alone makes it better for RVs than tent campers like us. There are loads of sites, well spaced with fire rings and picnic tables. We got rain and small hail on the 3rd weekend in July and it got to 40 F or below overnight. Deer, chipmunks, and a bald eagle were spotted. There were mosquitoes. There is a boat ramp into the reservoir. Heavily ATV traffic. Dog friendly but must be on leash. Gunfire noted early and late across reservoir. With proper prior planning, you will probably have a pleasant experience.

Encampment River Campground — Bureau Of Land Management

    Riverside Camping

$10; $5 with senior/interagency pass. Camped in site 8 on Oct 12, 2024; in my opinion, this is the best site. Short walk to his/hers vault toilets in day use area. Trash cans nearby. Site was level & accommodated my van. Area for setting up tent. Hammock camping possible. We'll water pump located near entrance to campground next to site #2. Picnic table and metal firering on site. Overall, the campsite was clean. Good separation between sites. Some trees and foliage between sites. Site was mostly shaded. Encampment River was behind the site. Hiking trail nearby. Liked this campground. I would stay here again. Campground was well maintained, and the vault toilet was clean and stocked. Very weak T-Mobile and AT&T service.

    Summit Lake

    Hidden Gem

Beautiful quiet campground  but a little hard to get to. Road from the east is much better than from Steamboat Springs. Quiet , well maintained,  more suited to car/tent camping. Great views of lake from many sites. Grills, tables, trash and toilets, No water. Went on weeknight  in July and it was about 3/4 full

    Teton Reservoir Campground - CLOSED

Serene views of the reservoir and landscape

There are probably 7 or 8 spots with picnic tables. Most have fire rings and a grill but not all. Bathrooms within walking distance. Dry and bare ground scape so no wood scavenging to be done here. Bring in firewood for sure! Also wouldn’t recommend tent camping as the ground is gravel with lots of rocks of various sizes! Easy road in so could bring a trailer or RV of any size. Pretty views. Only one other group here so quiet and lots of space

    Buffalo Pass Dispersed

    Breathtaking solitude

Yes, the road is rough, especially the higher up you go - take your time and have an appropriate vehicle. But it's worth it. So many options - spots with overlooks, tree-covered spots, open field spots. Something for everyone. It was hard to pick! I pulled off and found a place behind some rocks with nice grass and a fire ring, and several more grass/fire rings, but pitched my tent on some rocks. It was stunning. Didn't hear a single person or noise. I wish I had had more time. I will be back!!

    Brooklyn Lake Campground

    Brooklyn Lake

This campground was great! It was our backup plan… Sugarloaf was full.

We camped site #5. Which has a partial view of the lake through some trees, but a great view of the mountains.

Campsites have picnic tables and fire rings.

Road in was slightly rough, but easy to find/navigate, and any decent car can make it.

No water while we were there, but vault toilets were decent and open, there are 2 total. Trash is also available, so dont worry about packing it out.

ATT had spotty service, but you can hike up and maybe get a bar or two.

Speaking of hiking… There are some great trails which lead up to a glacial lake with some incredible views.

The other reviews about mosquitos are correct… They are relentless in the evening and mornings, but we were one of the closest campsites to the water, so the sites further back might have been a little better.

Arrive early(ish). We got here about 11am and site #5 was the only one available. Watched about a dozen more vehicles drive around camp throughout the day, without the same luck. This was on a Wednesday.

Overall, we had a great time here. Scenery was great, sites were clean, people were friendly.

Dutch Hill Campground — Steamboat Lake State Park

Not what it used to be

Well north of Steamboat Springs, up a beautiful valley and on a nice man-made lake. The sites are on top of each other and the beetle kill of the pines have made this a bit barren looking. Campsite can get loud with lots of family stuff going on. The lake is nice for a canoe and paddle board. Good launching point for hikes and MTB.

    Leave no trace.

Encampment River Campground — Bureau Of Land Management

    Pretty with no services

A pretty and small campground right on the Encampment River. There is a boat ramp just before you come to the campground. There are only about 8 or so sites, first come first serve, and super cheap at $10. Sites have picnic tables and fire pits, but watch for signs prohibiting fires when its dry. Most sites also had nice trees for hammocks. A few sites enable you to have some privacy with nice understory in-between sites. There is a nice trail along the river that obviously was made by anglers, but you can go for some ways before it petters out. There is a vault toilet that was fairly well maintained, but there is no water available at this campground, so you better be bringing all that you will need. No one had trailers here so I am guessing either they don't know about this site, can't get them safely down the road (it is steep and has a good twist or two in it), or they are not permitted. The river is COLD and fast, though not deep near the campground. I would not advise wading out too deep.

    Bottle Creek Campground

No option for the Bottle Creek Campground but it is right next to the Picnic Site

Walk-in availability only and about 11 sites which worked out fine. Only about 9 were filled when we were there. The bugs here got pretty annoying pretty quickly so be prepared. You will need a bear bag or vault. There are vault toilets and bear proof trash cans available. Water is also available. The tent sites were decent. You can fish in a nearby stream and check out the Green Mountain Falls accessible by day hike. They are worth seeing!

Guide to Encampment

Tent camping options near Encampment, Wyoming extend throughout the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest at elevations between 7,000-9,000 feet. The North Platte River corridor provides access to multiple primitive camping areas with seasonal weather conditions including afternoon thunderstorms during summer months and early snow potential beginning in September. Most sites require campers to pack out all waste and bring their own water supplies.

What to do

Fishing access points: Several riverside locations along the North Platte offer walk-in fishing opportunities. At Sanger Public Access Area on North Platte River, one camper noted, "Beautiful location on the North Platte River. Good for up to mid-size trailers or smaller."

Wildlife observation: Early mornings provide the best wildlife viewing at dispersed sites. At Medicine Bow, campers report significant animal activity: "We saw two bull elk and a calf play in the valley and drink from the pond as the sun went down. There's cacti, sage and pretty wildflowers."

Photography opportunities: Riverside camping areas provide unobstructed views of water, mountains and sky. A visitor to Pick Bridge Road remarked, "This area has a bunch of areas to access the North Platte River. It's a beautiful area that is good for fishing and is extremely quiet. You can be as secluded as you'd like to be."

What campers like

Natural sounds: The combination of river sounds and wildlife creates a distinctive nighttime experience. A camper at Foote Public Access Area observed, "It is next to a farm, which meant various wild and farm animal noises all night which kept me on my toes."

Multiple site options: Most locations offer varied camping spots with different terrain features. At Beaver Creek Trailhead, a visitor noted, "Beautiful views, one of our fav places. Completely free just follow the dispersed camping rules. No amenities."

Seclusion factors: Weekdays provide significantly more isolated camping experiences than weekends. One camper mentioned about Foote Public Access Area: "When nobody is here it's wonderful - right next to a creek, dogs can run around, and it is so very quiet and secluded."

What you should know

Access road conditions: Many sites require high-clearance vehicles, particularly after precipitation. A Medicine Bow camper warned, "There is a sign at the beginning of the dirt road for high clearance and 4 wheel drive. This is not a suggestion."

Site limitations: Most areas have only a handful of usable tent spots. A Foote Public Access camper pointed out, "This is a primitive camping spot with 3 to maybe 5 sites if you are pushing it. Free, with pit toilet."

Variable cell service: Connectivity is unreliable throughout the region. A recent visitor to Foote Public Access Area Dispersed reported, "The app was also showing at least some bars for Verizon but it's definitely SOS land."

Bug pressure: Insects can be overwhelming in certain locations. One camper noted, "Bring your bug spray, mosquitoes are relentless. Our poor dogs were getting bit all over."

Tips for camping with families

Space considerations: Look for sites that accommodate multiple tents. A visitor to Hahns Peak Lake Campground shared, "Our girls had a blast exploring and making their 'fort'. A very clean and peaceful place with an amazing view."

Weather preparation: Pack for temperature swings exceeding 30°F between day and night. At Sanger Public Access Area, one camper reported, "I had a rough time at this campsite... when thunderstorms rolled through I opted to sleep in my car."

River safety: Supervise children near water areas as river currents can be strong. A Foote Public Access visitor mentioned, "Close to the N Platte, probably good fishing much of the year."

Site selection timing: Arrive before 2pm to secure the best tent camping near Encampment, Wyoming during summer months. A Foote Public Access camper advised, "Stopped here on my way through. Got here around 3pm only 2 other people. Only a few spots are larger."

Tips from RVers

Turnaround space: Most dispersed areas have limited room for larger vehicles to maneuver. At Foote Public Access Area, a camper noted, "Camp at designated sites only. There are no numbered spaces, just small round a bouts and pull offs to pull into. About 6 vehicles is max for this site."

Leveling requirements: Bring blocking materials as most tent sites have uneven surfaces. "We pulled in there 8/1/23 and there is no longer camping allowed at this site its day use only," reported a visitor to Pick Bridge Road, highlighting the importance of checking current regulations.

Road width considerations: Access roads to the best tent camping near Encampment, Wyoming may narrow considerably after rainfall. One Medicine Bow camper warned, "This spot is extremely private and very rugged to access do not attempt after a rain as its impossible to pass then."
