Kettle Moraine State Forest campgrounds near Oconomowoc offer sites at elevations between 900-1,100 feet above sea level. The terrain features glacial formations including kettles, moraines, and drumlins created during the last ice age. Winter camping remains available at Ottawa Lake Campground year-round, with facilities maintained despite seasonal temperature variations that can range from below freezing to over 90°F in summer months.
What to do
Hiking the Ice Age Trail: Access trailheads directly from many campsites at Pike Lake Campground. "Within Pike Lake there are many hiking trails of varying lengths, and all are very well maintained. They are even updating the path of the trails to help stop erosion on the hills, which is impressive if you are interested in conservation and natural resource management," notes Joyce B.
Paddling and fishing: Launch kayaks and canoes at Kettle Moraine Southern Unit. "The lake is great for swimming, though they do have e coli warnings frequently in the heat of summer," shares Jimmy P. Water quality monitoring happens regularly, with results posted near beaches.
Winter activities: Snow camping and cold-weather hiking available December through March. "No showers in winter but awesome," reports David H. about Ottawa Lake. Winter sites require advance reservation and often have plowed access roads.
Astronomy trails: Follow the designated stargazing path at Pike Lake. "Be sure to check out the interpretive astronomy trail and take the walk up Powder Hill to the tower," suggests Susan S. The astronomy trail features educational signs about constellations visible in different seasons.
What campers like
Site privacy: Campsites at Pinewoods Campground feature natural barriers between neighbors. "The site was well wooded and very spacious! It had a decent clearing for some sun and the driveway was longer setting it back from the loop road," explains Jack D. Loop 1 sites average 50-75 feet between neighbors.
Swimming options: The quarry at Menomonee Park provides a spring-fed alternative to lake swimming. "The quarry is good for swimming, kayaking, or canoeing. There is a beach with life guards," explains Matt N. Water temperature remains cooler than surrounding lakes due to spring water input.
Fresh spring water: Natural springs create unique drinking and viewing opportunities. "Great hiking to see the natural springs which is the coolest!! Drank fresh spring water," shares Autumn S. Scuppernong Springs maintains a consistent 48°F water temperature year-round.
Diverse terrain: The changing landscape offers multiple ecosystems within short distances. "There are miles of nice hiking trails, a nice beach, pavilions to rent, horse riding trails, archery range and I'm sure I'm missing more," describes a Menomonee Park visitor. Elevation changes of 200+ feet occur within many trail systems.
What you should know
Loop selection matters: Choose camping loops based on specific needs. "Firstly- don't reserve a spot in loop 1 if you have a dog. It was easy enough to change but now we know to aim for loop 2 or 3," advises Art S. about Pinewoods. Loop 1 enforces 24-hour quiet hours and prohibits pets.
Wildlife awareness: Recent animal activity requires proper food storage. "There was a posting about black bear sightings in the area. We did not experience that, just chipmunks and birds," notes Abbe W. Bear-resistant containers recommended but not required.
Booking strategy: Reserve well in advance for popular weekends. "Sites in the region typically book 3-6 months ahead for summer weekends," reports a regular camper. Holiday weekends often fill 9+ months in advance.
Site characteristics: Research specific site features before booking. "Each of the 32 sites is unique in their own way. Some are large and flat perfect for a class A (#2 #4, #29 #31 is okay, but smaller), some incorporate the geography into the site (#23 & #17 - very much tent sites, #15 great for a small trailer)," explains Sugar Maple S. about Pike Lake Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Backpacking with children: Beginner-friendly backpacking options available for families. "For my five-year-old son's first backpacking experience, we hiked about 3 miles on the Ice Age Trail, into Pike Lake campground. Our campsite was very large, fully shaded, and included a picnic table and a fire ring," shares Jimmy P.
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play equipment near camping areas. "There is a playground right next to them as well," notes Wendy Z. about Pike Lake's facilities. Most playgrounds include standard swings, slides and climbing structures suitable for ages 5-12.
Educational opportunities: Nature programs operate seasonally at Mukwonago County Park. "We were lucky enough to have a couple of Sandhill Cranes walk through our camp early one morning," reports Abbe W. Rangers lead scheduled programs on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Mini-golf recreation: Family-friendly activities beyond hiking available at certain parks. "Theirs a mini gulf course that we had alot of fun with," mentions Taylor C. about Harnischfeger County Park. The 9-hole course costs $1 per person.
Tips for RVers
Tight turns: Navigate campground roads carefully with longer rigs. "There is a TIGHT turn in the campground loop near site #17 to be aware of with longer trailers," warns Sugar Maple S. about Pike Lake. Maximum recommended length for most loops is 32 feet.
Site selection for large rigs: Choose sites based on size and access requirements. "Each location maintains different site configurations," explains a campground visitor. Sites #2, #4, #29, and #31 at Pike Lake accommodate larger RVs.
Electric options: Most dog friendly campgrounds near Oconomowoc offer limited electric sites. "Generally, the inner ring is electric (except #23) and the outer ring is non-electric," notes a Pike Lake reviewer. Amperage typically limited to 30 amp service.
Seasonal access: RV camping availability varies by season. "We've been full time RVers for 4 years and this is a beautiful campground close to 'home'. We stay here a couple of times each year for doctor and dentist appointments, visiting family and friends, and general relaxation," shares Steve K. about Ottawa Lake Campground.
