Kettle Moraine State Forest Long Lake Campground

    this is a BIG campground

We had been to this area three years earlier, and stayed at Mauthe lake. That suited us better because it is motorboat free, and we have a canoe. Long lake is more suited for powerboats. the sites are also large and would handle big rigs. There are six different campground loops, none near the lake (though the 700 loop has a trail to the boat launch). We stayed in the lower 900 loop, the smallest. Our site, 906, was about 30 feet from site 730. all the sites in this loop are large and deep with the exceptions of 908,910, 912 which are right up against the road and have no privacy. sites 713 & 705 run into each other and are the best for a large group and a pull-through if you get them together.
Pit toilets only. Fire rings are decent. Wood is available 24/7 through a huge "vending machine" that costs $6 (a five and a one, no change) Wood from the shed costs a dollar less, but only when the ranger is at the front gate.
There's a beach with a concession stand and a separate boat ramp with parking.
We went canoeing at the very small nearby Silver lake and had it all to ourselves.
Sad news is that the Parkside general store, with it's ice cream and home-made maple candies is out of business. Zahn's trading post is temporarily closed, and the Woodland Creek Supper club (both in New Prospect) was undergoing renovation when we were there, a shame as we loved it last time.

    Brown County Reforestation Campground

    Big rig friendly

Great place to stay! Big rig friendly! Gravel pads and each site comes with a picnic table and fire pit. Bathrooms in the campground were clean and I believe there were showers.

    High Cliff State Park Campground

    Escarpment

Grew up near here and used to backpack across Lake Winnebago to winter camp and hike in January when the park was empty and no mosquitos to chew on my butt.

Indian Burial Mounds, old kilns, trails, hills, observation deck, sledding in winter, and lots of other things to do all year round.

This Park is actually on an escarpment that winds around Lake Michigan all the way to Niagara Falls. Limestone cliffs for climbing on, scenic.

in the summer the lake gets green with algae and there is a summer stretch wherever the lake flies hatch and get thick.

Good park for families. Close to small towns for resupply. Appleton & Green Bay are within striking distance as is Lake Michigan.

Bring arctic survival gear in January...subzero temps with wind chills in the negative teens is normal. Fantastic cross country skiing/snowshoeing.

    Mapleview Campground

Joyce and Stan make this place an Oasis

What a great little spot to visit. They have many sites in the field or in the woods. Most with electric 30/50 amp and a beautiful lake with many family friendly things to do. The people are friendly and they have clean showers and bathrooms along with laundry.

    Waupun Park Campground

Waupun County Park WI - Campground

Family friendly campground, playgrounds, pickle ball court, showers, clean bathrooms, fire rings, shared water spigots & power at camp site. There is an outdoor pavilion for groups, firewood for sale at host. Lamp posts light camp road but not overwhelming. Nice shaded sites with mature white oak trees. Enjoyed and recommend if looking for full service campsite.

    Sleepy Hollow Farms

    Convenient to the highway

General: There is both a north and a south part to this campground with a total of 178 sites. The sites in the south part are all on a grassy field and there is a small man-made lake with an inflatable play area. The sites in the north part are a mix of full hook-up and tent sites. There are also small cabins (only one of which has a bathroom) and three “condos”. These all had air-conditioners, but I did not see the inside of them. The north unit features a pond, which I was disappointed to discover was algae-filled and completely green.

Site Quality: Some are pull-through and some back-in. Some sites have electric and water hookups, some have picnic tables, and some have fire rings (but not all sites have all of these amenities). Only a handful have concrete pads; the rest are all on grass.

Our impression of Sleepy Hollow was influenced in part by the fact that it poured rain for much of our overnight stay. The roads were all dirt and with the rain, became very muddy along with the campsites as well. When leaving the next day, we had some challenges backing out of our site with the amount of mud. There is no clear delineation between the sites other than where the electric and water hookups are placed.

Bathhouse: Was very clean (in both the north and south units of the campground). Showers are available for a fee (five minutes for$1.00) but we did not use them so cannot comment on how well they worked.

Activities/Amenities: In the south unit, there is a small manmade lake with an inflatable play structure and plenty of life jackets. The color is a beautiful Caribbean blue, but it did not look natural, and I was not sure of the source of the color. We were there on a weekday in September, and no one was using the lake. There is a small bar and grill (in the north section) and a concession (south unit) on-site, but both were closed when we were there. Firewood was available (15 pieces for $10); we asked and were granted permission to use the golf cart to bring the wood to our site. Other than the lake, there really is nothing offered for recreation.

We chose this campground for its location; it is very close to Highway 41 in Oshkosh (you will hear road noise) and we were meeting family there. We checked in online the day before and arrived at 3:30 pm. No one was in the office when we arrived but the family members we were meeting had arranged for us to camp in the site next to them (not the original one we had selected). This campground is VERY close to EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association), and I imagine it would be completely full during the annual EAA convention. For us, it was a convenient location but aside from spending time with our family, the reason we chose this campground.

Long Lake Campground — Kettle Moraine State Forest-Northern Unit-Iansr

    Site 907

Our site was a bit less secluded than I’d prefer but still very nice. The loop we were on the lower 900 loop, had quite a few sites that could be combined to be group sites. Two sites completely adjoining or with very little separating them. This loop would be good for an option if the group sites are unavailable. Especially the inner loop sites that back up to each other. We walked some of the other loops and the did not all seem this way, stuff especially in the 700’s loop being a bit more wooded with some nice sites being my favorites, and also some nice sites in the upper 900’s loop that were spaced out nicely. Great hiking nearby, flush toilets, showers, nice little beach, plenty of downed wood around and also available to purchase 5$ a stack, pet friendly except no dogs allowed on the beach. There is a dog friendly picnic area near the water though. Nice get away pretty close to Milwaukee, Chicago, etc...

Sites throughout the region offer various terrain from wooded settings to waterfront locations within 30-45 minutes of Neenah.

What to do

Swimming and water recreation: Lake of the Woods Campground features a clean pond and beach area that's popular with families. "The beach/pond was so nice," notes one visitor, while another mentions they have "a pool and kiddie pool" that were well-maintained.

Fishing opportunities: Hickory Oaks Campground has a well-stocked pond where catching bluegill is easy. "Well stocked pond, easy to catch bluegill," reports one camper. Another mentions seeing "so much wildlife! Chipmunks, ducks, a great horned owl, and countless birds to name a few."

During Father's Day weekend they have a car show," shares one reviewer. Another family enjoyed "the 'Hey Ride'" and mentioned they "will be returning!!"

What campers like

Affordability: Omro RV Park offers budget-friendly rates compared to other area campgrounds. "$15 a night for a site with electric hookup! Dump station and fresh water on site," writes one satisfied camper. Another visitor confirmed the value, noting it's "$15 per night" with amenities including "dump station and water available."

Peaceful atmosphere: Pearl Lake RV Campground provides a quiet environment with tall pine trees. "This campground is nestled in a stand of tall red pine trees so shade is found everywhere," notes one visitor. Another camper mentioned "During the week it was like a ghost town and super cozy."

Pool amenities: Some campgrounds offer swimming facilities beyond natural water bodies. A Village Inn on the Lake visitor mentioned, "The indoor pool is so nice! It's a saltwater pool and they have a separate hot tub." Another visitor appreciated that "Indoor Saltwater Pool and Hot Tub!" were available with "Pool Restrooms with showers available for Campers!"

What you should know

Site size variations: Many campgrounds have tight spacing between sites. At Village Inn on the Lake, "The RV sites are small.. if you have a neighbor with a slide out then you lose half of your green space." Similarly, at Plymouth Rock Camping Resort, visitors noted "campsites are small" and they were "packed like sardines."

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds in the area operate from spring to fall. Hickory Oaks Campground runs "May 1 to Nov 1," while Pearl Lake RV Campground operates "Apr 15 to Oct 15." One notable exception is OshVegas Palms RV Resort which remains open "All year."

Noise factors: Some campgrounds are affected by nearby highways or attractions. Plymouth Rock visitors mentioned being "Too close to the racetrack/highway" where "the noise from the cars can be pretty loud but not a deal breaker." Similarly, one Apple Creek camper noted "What wasn't so great was the proximity to the interstate."

Tips for camping with families

Look for campgrounds with scheduled activities: Lake of the Woods Campground organizes events for children. Another mentions "the group campsite it's phenomenal... tons of space for each family and a great community area for your group."

Hickory Oaks provides "a small beach entertaining for kids" according to visitors, while Lake of the Woods has "a store, a bar, coin op laundry, a pool, a clean little pond & a great playground... tons to do to keep busy!"

Check the bathroom facilities: Bathroom quality varies widely between campgrounds. Pearl Lake RV Campground visitors noted "the showers are terrible. You must push a button every 20 seconds to keep the water coming." Conversely, Hickory Oaks receives praise for "well maintained" facilities where "showers are free."

Tips from RVers

Site access considerations: Different campgrounds offer varying ease of entry for larger rigs. At Osh Vegas Palms, campers appreciate the "Level and Large sites" with "easy entry for our 42 ft motor home without disconnecting our tow vehicle." Another visitor confirmed they have "long sites. Big rig friendly."

Hook-up options: Electric service varies between campgrounds. Hickory Oaks "improved the electric service a couple years ago" and offers "30 and 50 Amp hookups," while Omro RV Park provides "30 amp hook ups" with "water and a dump station" but no direct water hookups at sites.

Check for seasonal residents: Several campgrounds have high percentages of permanent or seasonal campers. At Pearl Lake, "about half of this park are permanent rigs" where "some of them even built structures around their campers, or siding outside!" One visitor observed "some rigs don't look like they could be towed out," though they added that "despite being full timers, everyone was very nice."
