    Pine Valley Lodge

Great view, Cabins run down and Beach was a mess

We have been coming here for a long time. It is under new management and we thought things would get better. While we were here other guests trashed the beach and had dogs running and using the bathroom throughout the campsite. The rules for dogs were to keep them on leashes and clean up after them. These rules were not being followed which caused the beach, in the past is lovely, but with the dogs using it as a bathroom the beach smelt like poop. Nobody in our week of staying cleaned up after them so we needed to go somewhere else to swim. If your place is pet friendly please make sure to keep up with your own rules. The cabins are run down but showers are hot and the utilities are still able to be used

    Boulder Lake

    We love it!

We chose this campground on a whim since we wanted to be near Lakewood where I would spend summers as a kid. We love this place and ended up choosing it for both of our camping trips last summer. We in fact got the same exact site and it’s our favorite anyway. This campground is pet friendly- We took our bulldog camping with us. We checked out the beach and it was very accessible. The showers , Bathrooms and Vault Toilets were all clean. We did enjoy the hiking on the campground but there were some parts that were a little overgrown. Overall we love this place and it’s our go to!

    Boot Lake Campground

    Secluded lake camping

This campground is near Townsend. If this one s full just continue down the road to Boulder Lake Campground.

We liked the diversity of campsites. You can find your own space and even add in some shade. Vault toilets and water can be found. Garbage bins are here too. The boat launch gives you access to the peaceful Boot Lake. We aren’t into fishing but liked that hiking isn’t too far. The Quartz Hill Trail is a bit of a drive past Townsend.

This is a peaceful respite in the Wisconsin woods.

    Ada Lake NF Campground

    Beautiful, quiet, national forest

A nice little beach, quiet well spaced sites, and nearby snowmobile/hiking trails. The lake it small with a few lake cabins across the lake. The camp host was great, keeping things clean and maintained a small camp library. No dogs allowed on the beach or even in the beach area. Some beautiful lakeside sites available. Lots of frogs and basically no bugs!

Musky Lake Campground — Northern Highland State Forest

    Wooded Sites Along the Lake

Musky Lake Campground is a nice campground. We camped mid-late June and had a nice little trip. Here's the good and the bad.

    The good:

A surplus of dragonflies means that mosquitos were NOT a problem. As someone who gets eaten alive this is important.

Deer are rampant in the area. The loons on the lake are the epitome of the north woods! I camp to enjoy wildlife, so this is a plus.

Nice hiking trails nearby. Numerous bike paths as well.

Large bathroom facility with flush toilets and showers.

    The bad:

Sites are close together. I prefer a bit more privacy than they allow.

Lake access from the site is...existent at best. I was able to launch my inflatable kayak very carefully between the sticks and weeds, though I'm not sure anything bigger or heavier would be worth launching from the site.

No beach swimming areas for dogs. There's a dog friendly picnic area, but it is certainly no place to let your dog swim. This was disappointing. Many of the trails are also off limits for dogs which is beyond me, though this is unrelated to the actual campground I'm sure.

All in all Musky Lake is worth checking out. There is a nice human friendly beach at nearby (you can walk there) Crystal Lake. The location is good, not too far from civilization for those who like a grocery store nearby. The sites were level and had plenty of room for our 2 tents. This area has to be on your list if you are a bike rider! I felt out of place because everyone up there had their bikes, and I could see why.

    Council Grounds State Park Campground

    Nice wooded campground

Stayed here one night while driving home from Lake Superior. I found this to be a pricey evening as you have to pay for a day use fee as well as a camping fee. But, it was all in all a nice campground. The shower house was clean, the campsites were wooded and well spaced out, and there were a couple of trails that went from the campground to the beach, boat ramps, or in the opposite direction, just nice walking/hiking trails. There seemed to be plenty of spots along the Wisconsin River or on Alexander Lake to fish if that’s your thing and you have a license. You can buy firewood up front at the ranger station. The park road went behind my campsite between me and the river, but it wasn’t too noisy as it was set back about 100 yards from the campground and there were plenty of trees to break the noise.

    Franklin Lake

    Beautiful lake true northwoods experience

I formally lived in northern Wisconsin and we would camp here quite often. Huge lake. Most sites are lake front with steps leading right down to your own private beach! This campground is very popular and busy but it is mostly local people and my experience has been they're all respectful. If youre looking for a less busy experience fall might be a better time or a weekday in summer. Don't forget the bug spray! Those northwoods bugs are lethal🤣

Guide to Gleason

Dispersed camping options near Gleason, Wisconsin provide access to the densely forested terrain of Lincoln County where elevations range between 1,450-1,550 feet. Winter temperatures often drop below zero, while summer averages remain in the 70s with frequent thunderstorms. Most free camping areas lack designated facilities but offer direct access to fishing lakes and ATV trails throughout the region.

What to do

Fishing from your campsite: Horn Lake Camping offers direct lake access for anglers. "Great spot right on the water. There are 2 camp spots with stone rings," notes Charles N., who adds, "We camped here in May not much for skeeters, good sites on the lake with a fire pit on a dead end road with a boat landing."

Hike the Ice Age Trail: Underdown Campground connects to this historic trail system. "It's as primitive as can be. Very ample space except near the water. Multiple small lakes around the area. Ice age trail for hiking and good blue gill spot," reports Wade W., highlighting the recreational variety.

Kayaking and paddleboarding: Council Grounds State Park Campground provides water equipment rentals. "We enjoyed being able to rent kayaks and paddleboards and relax on the beach," mentions Tate T. The Wisconsin River segment offers calmer waters for beginners.

Winter camping adventures: Langlade County Veterans Memorial Park hosts cold-weather camping events. As Charles M. describes his experience, "Loved the whole experience, the cold, the snow, the hammock camping. Quite an event!"

What campers like

Private campsites with space: Horn Lake Camping offers widely-spaced sites. "There are 2 camp sites with stone rings. They are about 40' apart on a cul-de-sac at the end of the road where the boat launch is," explains Skip H., describing the layout.

Family-friendly beach areas: Council Grounds State Park features supervised swimming. "Beautiful hiking trails, boating, cross country skiing. This park has a lot to offer. Not as crowded as some other state parks its a nice relaxing place to be," mentions Rebecca B.

Clean facilities: Dells of the Eau Claire Park Campground maintains well-kept grounds. "Nestled between towering trees, the campsites here were clearly marked and tidy. Each site has a nice fire ring with grate," according to Jenni C.

ATV trail access: Great Northern Campground connects to regional trail systems. "Campground has nice large sites. On ATV route. Small - medium swim pond with floats for climbing and jumping," says Lori S., highlighting the vehicle-accessible recreation.

What you should know

Limited cell service: Reception varies throughout the area. "No reception for verizon users. Tmoblie had a bar but spotty," warns Mandy R. about Dells of the Eau Claire Park.

Weather preparedness: Temperatures fluctuate dramatically. "The night time temperatures dipped in the low 30's in the middle of May when I was there," cautions Michael M., emphasizing the need for warm gear even in spring.

Road conditions: Camp New Wood County Park can be difficult to locate. "It was a bit tricky to find as its north of the park and not well identified," explains Kendra N., adding, "The water is a bit of a hike down the trail and through the woods so you might want to bring your own."

Limited amenities at dispersed sites: Jay S. notes about Horn Lake, "A few mosquitoes, but the wind kept them to a minimum! Great view of the lake and very private. About 2 miles of dirt road to get there."

Tips for camping with families

Group camping options: Langlade County Veterans Memorial Park accommodates larger parties. "This county park hits all the important stuff. Great sites. Electric sites. Nice restrooms with flush toilets/showers. Store. Fireword on site. Clear water for swimming and no motorized boats," writes Rebecca B.

Water play structures: Great Northern Campground offers swimming with floating platforms. "Small - medium swim pond with floats for climbing and jumping. One end of pond shallow for the very young," explains Lori S.

Kid-friendly trails: Council Grounds has accessible hiking paths. "Trees tower above you as you drive through the park. Beautiful hiking trails, but watch out for the biting deer flies as the sun goes down!" warns Amanda G.

Playground facilities: Sara Park includes recreational areas beyond camping. "There is a beach, two sand volleyball courts, boat launch, and park across the dead end road," notes Sharen.

Tips from RVers

Size restrictions: Horn Lake accommodates smaller vehicles only. Skip H. advises, "I would not recommend going to the left unless the max your hauling is a teardrop. Anyone up to 20' would be OK going to the right where the established 2 sites are."

Site levelness: Great Northern Campground has terrain challenges. "The site we had was extremely unlevel and had a low spot that filled up with water/mud in the rain," warns James M., adding concerns about their fee structure.

Dump station access: Sara Park offers nearby services. "There is a dump station nearby behind the city garage for $10," notes Sharen, providing important infrastructure information for RVers.

Electric hookups: Council Grounds State Park provides powered sites. Annie C. explains, "The campsites were wooded and well spaced out, and there were a couple of trails that went from the campground to the beach, boat ramps, or in the opposite direction."
