    Lake Wissota State Park Campground

Smaller scale park but lots to do

This park is on a smaller scale and less crowded than Devil’s Lake. There is a small beach that is in the process of renovation. The sites are large surrounded by trees and very private. The sites on the lake side are not electric and some of them are huge buddy sites, great for extended families. There are two shower houses in the campground located next to sites 29 or 72. If you are on the legs furthest from the lake it is a long walk to them, but all those sites have electric. There are two vault toilet locations and a total of 116 campsites all with a picnic table and fire ring. There is a very large playing field and a playground in the Family Campground and another playground past the beach near the fishing dock. This State Park has a large number of picnic shelters and picnic grounds with picnic tables. There are about 10 hiking trails. There is a boat launch and you can rent kayaks or canoes at the visitor center. Everything was kept clean and in good repair. Cell service for both AT&T and Verizon was strong enough to stream video. If you want to take a trip to town, there are about 5 no longer than a 10 mile distance. There was a large grocery store in Chippewa Falls. Only ice and firewood are available at the park.

    Russell Memorial Park

    Beautiful lake/creek front

The camp has a lot of long term sites on the waterfront so getting on one usually gets you into spring and camping. The waterfront has mostly electric only sites and run very close to size. We have a 28 5th wheel and we're snug. Site said 25 ft but the picture had a 5'er on it so we booked it. The back sites are ATV/UTV site. They have good access to the trails. They seem a bit bigger. I've seen a few toy haulers back there. There are a few full hookup in the center of the campground but not many. The shower and restrooms were clean. There are larger sites just not all waterfront. We like to travel too much to have a permanent site yet, so we try to come spring and fall here

    Nelson's Landing RV Park

    Clean & tidy RV campground

Easy pull-through and back-in sites. We easily backed in to our site. There was a large open grassy area behind us that our two dogs enjoyed. Brand new fire rings/pits. Beautiful view of the bluffs. Walking distance to several restaurants. Don't miss the Nelson Creamery. Housed in an old historic building, I was expecting just an average ice cream/Wisconsin cheese store, but it was really lovely inside and it reminded me of something in France. There is a formal dining room area, wine cellar, and casual outdoor seating on a patio under vine covered canopy. Soups, sandwiches, pizzas, beer and wine available.

We only stayed for 2 nights, but the best part was the bathroom/shower house! There were 3-4 private shower/toilet/sink rooms with full locking doors. Everything is brand new and pristinely clean: white subway tile, white walls, white fixtures. Great water pressure and temperature. It reminded me of a fancy athletic club like Lifetime Fitness!

There is also a laundry facility in the building (again, everything new and clean).

    Lake Wissota State Park Campground

    Beautiful family campground

Beautiful shaded campground with semi private sites. Nice beach that is a walkable distance from the sites. Lots of walking, biking and horse trails that are full of wild berries. Several stairways down to the lake, no beach at these spots but good for taking the dog in the water since they aren’t allowed on the beach. Wonderful staff in the visitor center. Firewood and ice sold on site. Also boat rentals and free yard games that can be checked out at the visitor center. Clean bathrooms with showers. Lots of boat noise from the lake and a plane noise from a nearby airport. Close to Chippewa Falls for restaurants and stores. A great family destination, not so great for a peaceful couples weekend.

    Russell Memorial Park

    Great ATV access

We stayed with a group for Memorial weekend. We have such a great time. Some of our group was tent camping and said the showers were nice and hot but tended to be a little muddy after awhile. Our site was a little hard to get into. We stayed at site 116 with a 40 ft 5th wheel. I would recommend booking early to get a better spot for a big rig. That spot would be easier to get our 30 ft travel trailer into. Water filling stations are all over the campground. It was our first time and we though the dump area was the water station. It was not. Other than that we would definitely recommend.

119 is paved ada 116 can fit a TT and atv trailer comfortably 115 - tight for a 32 ft travel trailer the trees are very close 132 - the area is below the street level which flooded out with mud

    East Fork Campground

quietest we've ever been to (October)

Very remote, although Hatfield, which is on the nearby lake, seems like it's a party town for Motor boaters, ATVers and Hunters, Depending on the season.
We were there in October, and the campground wasn't full, and was extremely quiet. So much so that there weren't even many birds in the morning.
Sites are very nice, the best ones are along the river. Ours was about 20' away. Other sites are backed up to a marshy area, so watch for mosquitoes. Only three sites are pull-through for big rigs; 104, 113 and 120. Site 109 and 111 are closest to the river, but if you think you'll be able to keep/ launch your canoe or kayak from your site, guess again, banks are very steep. There is a boat ramp by the check-in station that is very nice though.
Firepits are the usual steel rings with an adjustable grill. Firewood is $5 a rack, you pull what you want out of the shed, fill the rack and take it away. Bring something to haul it with, it's a generous rack. Honor system when the Host is away, cash when there apparently.  Try to climb up and get the drier wood towards the back.
Restrooms are clean, pit toilets with motion detector lights at night. Water is from a pump, that is clear and cool and unlike many Midwestern campsites, not brackish with an iron taste.

    Highland Ridge

    Beautiful but buggy!

General: Smallish (38 sites plus four walk-in sites) Army Corps of Engineers campground. Some (see below) have electric hookups but no water or sewer hookups, however, there is a dump station.

Site Quality: All sites are gravel/dirt (except for the ADA-accessible site), and most are very generous in size. Our site (7) sloped down but leveled out with plenty of room for our campervan at the bottom. All sites are wooded with trees providing separation/privacy between sites. Completing the site are a metal picnic table, fire ring, and lantern hook.

Bath/Shower House: Sites 28-38 only have vault toilets (but you could trek to the other campground loop). Sites 1—27 have flush toilets and showers. They were very clean, and I especially appreciated the fact that they were cleaned daily before 6 am, a shout out to the camp host! The shower was great– warm water and great flow, although our friends (who arrived two days before we did) had cold showers when the campground was full.

Activities: Several short hiking trails. I give this campground 4 stars instead of 5 because Eau Galle Reservoir (Lake George) is about a 10-minute drive from the campground. Most Corps of Engineers campgrounds are located right on the water. There are no amenities (rentals, etc.) offered at the lake but it is small and beautiful, and we enjoyed a peaceful paddle. We saw a couple of people fishing on the lake and there is a small swimming area. At the campground, there was an interpretive center, but it was locked when we were there. There is also a nice, modern playground.

Aside from the plentiful bugs (in August), we enjoyed our two-night stay at this campground!

Guide to Chippewa Falls

RV camping near Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin offers sites along the Chippewa River and several lakes within a 30-mile radius. The camping season typically runs from mid-April through mid-October, with most campgrounds closing for the harsh Wisconsin winters when temperatures regularly drop below freezing. Several campgrounds feature river access for tubing, fishing, and kayaking activities during the summer months.

What to do

Tube down O'Neil Creek: At O'Neil Creek Campground, campers can enjoy the natural creek that flows through the property. "The natural creek that doubles as a lazy river is great," notes reviewer Darren L. Children especially enjoy this activity as "the creek is very shallow so even littles can do it too," according to Stina M.

Visit local attractions: Many campgrounds serve as good base camps for exploring the region. "It is a great place to stay if you want to float down the Chippewa River, Loopy's the bar in town will shuttle you to and from the campsite and drop you off with their tubes at the river," explains Anna from Eagle Ridge Campground.

Enjoy water activities: Lakes and rivers near Chippewa Falls provide swimming, fishing and boating options. "Nice campground, has everything. There is a creek flowing through it to tube, swim and even kayak. Rentals available," shares Jim about O'Neil Creek Campground.

What campers like

Family-oriented activities: Stoney Creek RV Resort offers numerous planned events for guests. "There are so many different planned activities for both the children and the adults to participate in. They have gaga ball, a bounce pillow, an arcade, mini golf, laser tag, swimming pool, skate park, playground, basketball court, volleyball court," notes Jen A.

Spacious camping areas: Many campers appreciate the room to spread out. "The sites are huge almost state park like with ample room for your kids to play," explains a reviewer about Stoney Creek. Similarly, at Chapman Park Campground, you'll find "clean green spaces to play fetch with the dog or let the kids run are all over this park."

Clean facilities: Campground cleanliness ranks high in camper satisfaction. "The bathrooms were sparkling clean. The showers were hot and the laundry was reasonably priced," reports a visitor to Eagle Ridge Campground. At Nelson's Landing RV Park, campers note "the bathroom/shower house! There were 3-4 private shower/toilet/sink rooms with full locking doors. Everything is brand new and pristinely clean."

What you should know

Seasonal closures: Most RV parks near Chippewa Falls close during winter. Nelson's Landing RV Park operates from "May 1 to October 31," while O'Neil Creek Campground runs from "Apr 15 - Oct 15."

Site differences: Campgrounds offer varying levels of privacy. "The spots were narrow and opened up to neighbors," notes Beth B. about Eagle Ridge. Meanwhile, at Stoney Creek RV Resort, "you can rent a golf cart to get around the campground," according to Jen A.

Local noise factors: Some campgrounds experience noise from nearby transportation. Nelson's Landing has "railroad tracks nearby with trains come through several times a day/night," reports Sam C. At Chapman Park Campground, however, visitors find it to be a "Nice, quiet campground between 2 small lakes and next to a deer park."

Tips for camping with families

Look for kid-specific amenities: Stoney Creek RV Resort features "a nice pool and mini golf. A bouncy pillow and a bubble maker for kids," according to Mikala D. O'Neil Creek Campground is described as "awesome for the whole family!!"

Consider proximity to attractions: Some campgrounds offer on-site activities. Chapman Park provides "a lighted park for kids to play at night and plenty of fishing," notes Scott J. Others mention "movies in the summer" at O'Neil Creek.

Reserve well ahead for theme weeks: Popular family events fill quickly. "The theme weeks are all fun and well planned out. You can even order fresh baked donuts on Saturday mornings," shares a reviewer about Stoney Creek RV Resort.

Tips from RVers

Big rig access: Thornapple River Campground offers "electric and water service available. The hosts will pump your tanks for a $10 fee," according to Amanda W.

Hookup variations: RV sites offer different utility options. At Chapman Park, "they have 20-30-50amp hook ups with a dump and water," notes Scott J. Nelson's Landing provides "easy pull-through and back-in sites" that accommodate large rigs.

Internet considerations: For remote workers, site selection matters. "This campground has a large grassy area - that gives a 100% clear obstruction for Starlink. However, the other half of the campground is within a super treed area," explains a reviewer about Eagle Ridge Campground.
