Somerset area campgrounds accommodate various hiking requirements with Shenandoah National Park trails accessible within 30-45 minutes of most local camping options. Several campgrounds operate at higher elevations of 3,000+ feet, which brings cooler overnight temperatures even during summer months. Seasonal operation varies widely, with many facilities closing between late October and early May.
What to do
Trail connections at higher elevations: At Big Meadows Campground, campers can access hiking directly from their site. "Big Meadow has many amenities which make it popular and oftentimes crowded during weekends and holidays. But, many of these amenities make camping with families a convenience. We saw many deer and bear while camping. Just being in Shenandoah is a soothing experience. With so many hiking trails and waterfalls nearby we love to camp in Big Meadows - and for the star watching at night," notes Rachel M.
Lake activities for warm weather: Christopher Run Campground offers water-based recreation on Lake Anna. "This campground has access to lake Anna and is clean... quite times 9 and they have security going around to remind everyone," says Chris B. The campground includes boat ramp access, equipment rentals, and a beach area for swimming during summer months.
Family recreation facilities: Small Country Campground features multiple recreation options beyond standard hiking. "This place is great for family camping. They have a pond, pool, playgrounds, 'bouncy pillow', mini golf, and lots more. We have camped here for nearly a decade and always have a great time. They are constantly expanding and improving the grounds," explains The Mayor.
What campers like
Wildlife viewing opportunities: The higher elevation campgrounds regularly feature wildlife sightings. "The campground was wonderful. Facilities were clean and well maintained. Bear box for food storage. Loved seeing the deer so close and other wildlife," writes Terri S. about her experience at Big Meadows Campground.
Natural swimming areas: Christopher Run Campground offers natural swimming options. "This campground has a wonderful beach with swim access to the lake. Most of the campers are long time seasonal campers, and a lot even live here. The beach is well maintained and campsites are spacious," according to Brooke V.
Varied accommodation options: Shenandoah Crossing provides unique lodging experiences. "We stayed in a yurt, and I'm gonna let the photos do most of the talking. We got here super late and were still able to check in because they're at the desk 24/7. Yurt has a full kitchen and bath. Coffee, popcorn, toiletries, linens provided. Such a sweet little spot tucked outside of the Blue Ridge Mountains," says RL.
What you should know
Seasonal weather impacts: Cold weather affects facilities and comfort levels. "We camped here the last night of the season (Nov30) and shared the campground with a mix of tent campers, car/van campers, and a few larger units. The bathrooms were plentiful, heated, hot running water, and a utility sink available. Showers and laundry were closed for the season but are centrally located near entrance area of campground. Elevation above 3000 feet and plenty of deer! It was an especially cold night hitting a low of 14F," explains Carol B. about her stay at Loft Mountain Campground.
Insect activity timing: Summer brings increased bug activity. "The bugs when we got here were kinda crazy. They don't bite but they swarm your head and try to enter every orifice for some reason. A head net was helpful to get the tent and screen room set up," notes Veronica S. about Big Meadows Campground.
Flood-prone areas: Low-lying sites may experience flooding. "It looks like a really great camp ground. T-1 though T-6 sites flood often became they are low and next the the river. We camped at t2 and had to tear down as soon as we set it up," warns Jennings A. about Misty Mountain Camp Resort.
Tips for camping with families
Reservations essential for weekends: Popular family campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. "Make sure you reserve your spot on the weekend they go fast," advises John H. about Christopher Run Campground, which offers boat ramp, equipment rentals and a general store on site.
Child-appropriate swimming areas: Not all water features work well for young children. "The beach area is small with a concrete ledge next to the water. It didn't look very safe for small children," cautions Tina C. about Christopher Run Campground.
Age-appropriate recreation options: Consider children's ages when selecting a dog friendly campground near Somerset. "Great for Adults. The playground is for kids 5+ and there's not much to do outside of swimming in the lake for 5 and under. People at the lake were friendly but long term campers seemed to want to have nothing to do with anyone. I'd recommend for adults and teens more so than large families with younger kiddos," explains Brooke V.
Tips from RVers
Utility connections vary widely: RV sites often have challenges with connections. "The sites were full hookup. A grill and table and chairs were also available. A fire ring was there also. The laundry facility was very nice and clean... and free," notes Brenda L. about her experience at Shenandoah Crossing.
Limited shower facilities: Many campgrounds restrict shower access or have unusual systems. "The shower left SO MUCH to be desired. First, the shower head is on the ceiling which is about 10 feet tall. There is a push button to turn water on (no temp adjustment) and it only allows 36 SECONDS of water before it shuts back off. The water is Lukewarm. There are no hooks near the shower area to hang towels, washcloths or a shelf to set your shampoo, soap, etc," reports Tina C.
Site leveling challenges: Sites often require significant leveling. "RV section is typical style in a large field. Back in sites for smaller trailers such as our teardrop were plenty big enough but still on the outskirts of the field. Electric sites have 20a, 30a, and 50a hookups so small trailers can use a normal extension cord," explains Mike G. about Misty Mountain Camp Resort.
