Pocahontas State Park Campground welcomes pets throughout its 120 spacious, shady campsites with easy access to hiking trails and recreational areas. The park's sites accommodate tents, RVs, and cabins, with bathrooms and hot showers available to campers. Each site includes a picnic table, lantern holder, and level tent pad, providing comfortable accommodations for both human and canine campers. South Forty RV Resort & Campground and Picture Lake Campground also permit pets, offering full hookups for RVs and tent camping options. Sites at South Forty are fairly level with new picnic tables and gravel pads, though spacing between campsites varies significantly throughout the property. The bathrooms and facilities require maintenance at some properties, with cleanliness issues noted particularly at South Forty.

Pocahontas State Park features numerous pet-friendly trails accessible directly from the campground, including the Powhatan Trail which connects to an extensive network of hiking paths. The paved roads throughout the campground provide additional walking opportunities for leashed pets. During summer months, campers should monitor ground temperatures as the asphalt can become too hot for sensitive paw pads. Lake Chesdin Campground offers water access for pets who enjoy swimming, though facilities are more limited. Camptown Campground maintains a supportive community atmosphere for travelers with pets, making it suitable for overnight stops while traveling along I-95. Noise considerations vary by location, with Picture Lake Campground experiencing disruptions from a nearby race track that operates until midnight, potentially disturbing pets sensitive to loud sounds.

      Americamps RV Resort

      Most Dog-Friendly

Enjoyed my corner pull-through site F2 even though it was gravel with some muddy spots. There are some paved spots near the entrance (7-10 and 15-19 plus VIP 1 & 2). Fire pits and wood for $6 upon request. Nice office with two small dogs to greet you and a jar of dog treats. Was decked out for Halloween during my stay, and the flower beds, pond, playground, basketball court and dog park were among the nicest. There is even an on-site dog walker, so dog people will really appreciate staying here. I noticed one side of the park (around site 22) is very noisy during the work day as there is a big lumber yard there. The proximity to the Great Outdoors and a couple of cute pub houses was a nice surprise. Recycling dumpster on site.

Nice place with a few cons

Nice level pull through concrete site with paved road. Good hook ups, clean facilities, nice dog park and clean pool/hot tub. Close off 95, but far enough you don't hear it at all. We even got a gazebo site, which was awesome. They even allow you to wash your rig. Only negatives, are not much in the area to do, no cable or wifi and absolutely no antenna service. Shopping, Walmart, gas and chain restaurants close by. Would definitely stay here again.

      Cloverdale Farms

      Camping at Cloverdale

We’ve got a little 20 acre hobby farm. This historic property has gently rolling hills, with a little creek amidst a couple acres of cleared, open, secluded woodland perfect for pitching a tent and listening to nature. Fields in the back lend a great view for star gazing and looking up at the Milky Way. If the peace and quiet isn’t enough for you, there are pet goats, cats, a dog, and chickens that all love attention. Guests are more than welcome to help in the garden, pick flowers, and enjoy fresh produce and eggs while they’re here. Located 5 minutes from the James River, guests can hop over to the boat landing for fishing, swimming and boating or check out Blanton and Pleasants, a community staple. If you’re a hiker, there’s a state forest and state park just a short 15 minute drive west.

      Sweet Community

This is a surprisingly zen spot for what is basically a parking lot surrounded a pine plantation. The community is very friendly and includes a lot of long-term residents, some of whom even have little veggie gardens. There's a lovely little pool and hot tub (unfortunately for the youth, they aren't allowed in the latter), a pool table, a grill, a little putt-putt golf course, and a nice dog park. There is also (at least on the women's side) a very nice universal access shower suite. And some of the spots come with sweet little gazebos to hang out in! I was permitted, with only a few hours notice, to arrive after office hours, for which I was very grateful.

      Isle of Wight Family Campground

      Nice and Very Quiet!

This is a really nice campground. They have on-site bathrooms/showers as well as laundry. It's mostly RV spots but they also allow tent camping and have a couple cabins available for rent. They have a dog park area, playground and pool. The store has items for purchase and a gathering room. They do potlucks and get togethers often for the campers. The staff is very friendly and super helpful. You can purchase firewood and propane on-site. Each spot has a concrete padded area with a picnic table and fire pit. It is a little ways out of town in any direction bit it's very nice and quiet out here as you're surrounded by woods. They also have a fishing pond and trails on-site. This really is one of the best campgrounds I've ever been to! Definitely recommend.

Bear Creek Lake State Park Campground

      Weekend getaway

This was our first time camping at state park with our dogs and it has been great. We were able to score a campsite with a view of the lake and easy access to the Channel Cat Loop trail. Our tent pad was covered in rubber pieces which made for a comfortable base for our tent, and the separate area with fire pit, picnic table and pattern hooks was awesome. Another couple joined us and there was plenty of room for all four people and three dogs to spread out. Fell even more in love when majority of campsites left on Sunday, leaving peace and quiet all around. Bonus is having the dog only section at the swimming beach, which made for a fun afternoon with our pups.

      Anvil Campground

Sandwiched in on all sides! And the noise!!

This is a 4 acre parking lot with a good number and quality of very small amenities (pool, dog park) with 60 “sites” sandwiched between roads and very active train tracks. It is NOT a campground.

Owners for several generations have built out the space well but never should have started. Then they’ve been totally dishonest in their marketing of a litany of amenities listed and pictured but skipping the road running the length of the narrow property on one side, with active train tracks and highway along other side. Meanwhile, you are packed in here such that you don’t put out your awning or any exterior items and weave your way through the next RV’s bump out, utility pedestal and septic hook up to get in your door.

With AC on, windows and shades closed, we can hear neighbor AC, TV, loud/long trains, cars on road and highway day and night. Train is so close that it shakes our RV.

Good level ground with gravel and some trees, but ridiculous to call this a campground and pay $60 for lower end “sites” on a weekday. Goes up from there. They have a liberal cancellation policy after first night when you see how bad it is. But if you have area plans, finding & reserving someplace else, moving etc. is a HUGE interruption. Or they could just be honest in their advertising & cut way down on sites smooshed together.

We expressed dissatisfaction and ultimately got 10% additional off beyond our 10% Good Sam Membership. It should have been much more. But don’t accept less, or better yet, don’t come in the first place. Unbelievable that this lot, not campground, is virtually full.

    Guide to Dinwiddie

Camping options near Dinwiddie, Virginia cater to outdoor enthusiasts seeking wilderness experiences with their animals. The area sits at the edge of Virginia's Piedmont region, with elevations ranging from 130 to 250 feet and moderate rainfall year-round. Winter temperatures typically range from 30-50°F, while summer camping months can reach humid highs in the upper 80s, creating seasonal considerations for pet friendly camping near Dinwiddie.

    What to do

Water recreation access: Most campgrounds near Dinwiddie provide lake or pond fishing opportunities, with Emporia KOA Holiday offering additional water activities. "Kids had a blast playing in the water and taking the paddle boats out. Campground was clean, quiet and spacious! We camped in a tent not far from the beach area," notes Crystal K.

Mountain biking: Pocahontas State Park Campground features extensive trail networks for cyclists of all skill levels. "Lots of hiking, fantastic mountain bike trails, lots of history. LOVE the staff. 20 mins from every store you can imagine, but super quiet at night," reports Ashley I.

Historic exploration: The region contains numerous Civil War sites and historic locations within short driving distance from most campgrounds. "A good place to stop near I-95... We stayed here recently while visiting friends in the area and this purpose it worked well," says Randy C., highlighting the convenience for exploring local attractions.

    What campers like

Tree cover and natural setting: Even in cooler months, campers appreciate the wooded environment at several area campgrounds. "Some of the campsites are surrounded with forest. Very quiet and peaceful," mentions Gregg S. about sites at Pocahontas State Park.

Easy interstate access: For travelers with animals needing breaks during long trips, Camptown Campground provides convenient overnight accommodations. "Such a lovely and supportive community. Feels like a neighborhood (lots of long-termers) Junie is so nice! We took a risk on this place in the middle of the night trying to outrun a winter storm," shares Heather M.

Level sites for setup: South Forty RV Resort & Campground receives positive feedback for site conditions. "Level sites with good size sites. Didn't venture out as temps dropped fast this day. Good stop for overnight," notes Robert M., highlighting features important for pet owners needing quick, comfortable setups.

    What you should know

Noise considerations: Beyond the racetrack mentioned in existing descriptions, other environmental factors impact pet friendly camping near Dinwiddie. "We are full time and were passing through and saw this on map. Friendly staff. Level sites with good size sites," explains Randy C., noting the varying noise levels depending on site location.

Facility maintenance varies: Recent updates at some locations have improved amenities. At Amelia Family Campground, "New Updated water and electric has been installed. Great family owned. And the site are NOT right on top. It is a good one family campground," according to Ian B., contradicting some older reviews.

Reservation requirements: Several campgrounds have limited availability, particularly during peak seasons. "I am a retired major. My wife and I bought an older motorhome, and this location was great to test it out. I come again. Bath house is a few blocks way, but for 25 dollars a night. The price was right," shares Todd K. about Pickett RV Park.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground options: While some campgrounds feature dedicated play areas, quality varies significantly. "Small rundown playground along with a small pool are easily accessible. The site also comes with limited hiking trails, a pond, and a large field for the kids to run in," notes Samantha G.

Swimming facilities: Picture Lake Campground offers swimming opportunities beyond what's mentioned in existing descriptions. "Nice sites full hook up. Pool and laundry close to pool. Clean store. Kid friendly," shares Tracy, providing additional context for families planning activities.

Activity scheduling: Theme events and seasonal programming enhance stays at certain locations. "There was a dance party with yogi and his friends and our kids enjoyed that. We also painted some figurines in the arts and crafts area. Overall great experience!" reports Crystal K. about available organized activities.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for leveling: First-time RV campers should choose locations that minimize setup challenges. "This was my first trip in my new travel trailer. What a great experience. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Sites were well organized and easy to access. The pull through spot really helped on my first adventure," advises Ryan D.

Water and sewer connections: Some campgrounds feature unusual utility placements that can complicate hookups. "We were close to the front. They have full hookups. The sewage was a little weird to hookup but we figured it out," explains Kim O., providing practical information for pet owners who need reliable facilities.

Winter camping considerations: For year-round pet friendly camping near Dinwiddie, Virginia, seasonal preparations are essential. "Just passing through and nice place to pull in with our trailer and stay hitched. Wish the site was more level but a couple leveling blocks fixed it. Nice that they are open year round," notes Cindy about Emporia KOA Holiday.
