RV campgrounds in the Dinwiddie region offer both overnight accommodations and extended stay options year-round. The area features a mix of privately-owned campgrounds and state parks within driving distance of Petersburg and Richmond attractions. Temperatures range from 30-90°F depending on season, with summer humidity requiring reliable air conditioning for comfort in RVs and cabins.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Thousand Trails Lake Gaston provides lakeside recreation with access to multiple fishing spots. "Beach on lake as well as a pool. Very quiet with many full time residents. Most spots reserved for the summer," notes David L., highlighting the popularity of water activities in warmer months.
Mountain biking trails: Pocahontas State Park Campground features extensive trail systems for cyclists of all skill levels. "Lots of hiking, fantastic mountain bike trails, lots of history. LOVE the staff," shares Ashley I., who appreciates the park's outdoor recreation options just 20 minutes from major shopping.
Mini golf and yard games: Cozy Acres Campground offers family activities beyond standard camping. "They have a lot of activities, such as pool, fishing pond and trails. The site was clean and everything worked great!" reports Isaac R., though he notes sites are closely spaced.
What campers like
Level, concrete pads: American Heritage RV Park provides well-maintained sites with solid foundations. "What a nice RV park with 138 sites mostly pull thru's with full hookups 30/50amps just minutes off the highway I-64. Our site was very nice site#10, a leveled concrete site with room to park our towed vehicle while still attached to our Motor Home," explains Mary H.
Clean facilities: Americamps RV Resort maintains well-kept common areas. "The grounds themselves have a fitness facility and pool which are nice, a group gathering area and also a very substantial store. There is a shared grill garden for grilling with a propane grill, a basketball court and dog run area as well," details Crystal C.
Proximity to attractions: South Forty RV Resort & Campground offers convenient access to Petersburg. "Perfect location right off of I-95. Spot we had was spacious and easy to get in and out of. I arrived after hours, but had my reservation hanging on the wall for me. Ground was pretty level and hookup was easy," shares Katie G.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: RV Resort At Carolina Crossroads experiences fluctuating occupancy through the year. "Starting in 2008 I have used this campground. Facilities are always clean. Paved roads, cement pads at the sites. Sites are level. Sites are very wide. I will always stop by when passing through," notes Ken & Pam J.
Site limitations: Americamps has specific considerations for tent campers. "If you are in an RV this place makes sense completely with a standard rate of $44 for a basic water and electric site or $46 to add sewer. But if you are a tent camper like myself the price point of $44 is a bit to much just to lay my head on the ground with a few amenities," warns Crystal C.
Military-only options: Richmond Family Recreation RV Camp offers specialized accommodations for qualified campers. "Small six site campground that the fire department states is never used. Nice clean level spots. Easy on and out if visiting Richmond. You must get a permit from the fire department to use grill, super simple and took five minutes," explains Never Sitting S.
Tips for camping with families
Pool access timing: Thousand Trails Williamsburg offers both indoor and outdoor swimming options. "Every member of staff is very friendly and welcoming. It is a serene campground with beautiful walking trails. All the amenities for our two toddlers too… big pool outside, plus an inside pool and hottub," shares Rachel.
Playground facilities: Cozy Acres Campground provides dedicated play areas. "The playground is impressive and the staff is very welcoming upon arrival. We've fished at the little catch and release pond successfully but didn't try out the catch and keep catfish pond," notes Michaela.
Weekend activities: South Forty RV Resort schedules regular family programming. "Site A4 was pretty nice. Had enough space between my camper and the neighbors. The only downside was a utility hub somewhat in the middle of the site. The site itself was fairly level, had a brand new picnic table, and had a little gravel pad," reports Matt.
Tips from RVers
Overnight positioning: American Heritage RV Park offers varying site configurations. "We chose to stay here instead of one of the campgrounds in VA Beach just because traffic in and around VA Beach is crazy. Seriously. I felt much better about just driving there with my car instead of towing the trailer through that mess," advises Sharon B.
Extended stay arrangements: Pickett RV Park accommodates longer visits with specific utilities. "I am a retired major. My wife and I bought an older motorhome, and this location was great to test it out. I come again. Bath house is a few blocks way, but for 25 dollars a night. The price was right," shares Todd K.
Access challenges: Some campgrounds present navigational difficulties. "We saw another camper with a rig identical to ours struggle to get into a back-in site, ultimately hitting a water faucet across the road, leaving the park without water for over two hours. These sites are simply not suitable for big rigs," warns Lisa D. about challenging site layouts.
