Best RV Parks & Resorts near Glen Allen, VA

Americamps RV Resort in Ashland offers spacious pull-through RV sites with full hookups including water, electric, sewer, and cable TV. Sites feature gravel pads with some concrete options available near the entrance. Most spots accommodate big rigs with level surfaces and adequate spacing for slide-outs. "We enjoyed staying at our corner pull-through site F2 even though it was gravel with some muddy spots. There are some paved spots near the entrance," noted one camper. Thousand Trails Williamsburg provides year-round motorhome sites with water and electric hookups, while American Heritage RV Park in Williamsburg maintains 160 sites with 50-amp service. The Richmond Family Recreation RV Camp features military-only RV sites with electric hookups and 50-amp service but lacks sewer connections at individual sites.

RV travelers should plan ahead during peak seasons as availability becomes limited, particularly at parks near Interstate 95. Dumping facilities vary significantly between locations, with Americamps and American Heritage offering on-site sanitary dump stations, while others provide full sewer hookups at each site. Cell service remains consistent throughout the region with Verizon coverage specifically mentioned as reliable in multiple reviews. For RV campers traveling with pets, most parks in the area welcome animals, though specific restrictions may apply. Several campgrounds operate seasonally, including Cozy Acres Campground RV Resort (April through mid-November) and Thousand Trails Harbor View (April through mid-October). Proximity to service stations and propane fill locations should be considered when planning extended stays, as not all parks offer on-site propane service.

    FREE Wifi and cable

Picnic table, fenced dog run, dump station, 24 hour laundry, concrete pads with patios, game room, horseshoes, volleyball, swimming pool, mini golf, golf carts, cabins and more. Belle Isle State Park Campground

    BELLE ISLE STATE PARK

First time staying in a travel trailer at a state park. We booked the day of, because we were being indecisive, and there were a few spots available.

We came in after hours, and the guide at the entrance told us where to get our packet (from the kiosk in front of the camp store).

It’s very easy to find everything here, and the camp ground had both pull-throughs and back in spots. Plenty of separation between you and your neighbor for some privacy. No issues with the water/electric/dump station. Almost no cell service to speak of, but that’s the beauty of going to a place like this. Very kid and pet friendly. The community showers and bathrooms are very clean.

Lots of bugs and mosquitos. Plan accordingly.

Both the visitor center and camp store have plenty of souvenirs, but not much besides that. Just know, if you don’t plan well enough to bring something, you’ll be traveling 20-30 min out of your way to reach anything besides a gas station (nearest grocery store/Walmart is 25 min away).

Overall, it was a great first experience in our RV at this state park!

    Powhatan State Park Campground

    Huge park, great sites!

What a beautiful park! Over 1500 acres with 40 sites, this trip was the start of the camping season for me- the opening weekend for camping in State Parks in VA(COVID-19). The park and grounds are extremely well-maintained. I was very happy to see such a clean bathhouse, especially during the current pandemic. Each staff member I encountered was extremely helpful and polite. The park has lots of trails, miles of open meadows, and James River access. Great park for bicycling. The sites in the River Bend Campground(main campground) are private and wooded, especially this time of year when the trees are so full. The map makes it look like they’re really close together so I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived to my site, which was the las time available for booking(#16). There are 29 tent/RV sites and three yurts. The sites are gravel and include a picnic table, lantern/trash pole, and a fire pit with grill gate. Theres also a group site for 24 or so, bit that’s not open at the moment due to state restrictions. There’s overflow parking for the campground, dumpsters, and a dump station. Some are pull-through for RVSs and many have water/electric. Wood is for sale at the park but no ice or refreshments. Pet-friendly. There are also laundry facilities at the main bathhouse, nice hot/cold showers. Many picnic areas and a playground. There’s also a canoe-in site with 8 primitive sites: no water, electricity, or facilities(there’s a pit toilet). Depending on the time of the year they might be in the flood zone if the river is high, which it was during this trip. Some of those sites can also be booked for hiking into- it’s only a 0.2 walk from the parking lot. Tabb Monument State Park is nearby if you’re working your way through the parks as I am (no overnight facilities there). You’re also about 10-15 minutes from the town of Powhatan so if you need groceries or gas, you’re not far from Sheetz, Food Lion, etc. Loved this park so much and will definitely be returning!!!

    American Heritage RV Park

Cannot Recommend for Big Rigs or Groups

We recently brought a group of ten campers to American Heritage RV Park because several of us had stayed there before and remembered it as a clean, well-kept park. Based on those positive experiences, we recommended it to our group and looked forward to sharing the campground with them. Unfortunately, this stay did not meet our expectations. Because sites are not assigned in advance, we could not choose sites that worked well for our group. Our 42-foot fifth wheel was placed in back-in site#136, which— like the other back-in sites— has a tree planted at the rear that prevents fully backing in. This left us very close to the road, with no way to park in front and no room to park alongside without blocking our steps. We first parked across the road in a grassy area but were told to move. When we parked in another group member’s pull-through site, we received a call saying two vehicles were not allowed— even though we observed several sites with two vehicles. The office directed us to the overflow lot near the front of the park, the farthest point from our site on the back row. When we asked to speak to the manager, we were told she works off-site. I emailed her asking her to visit our site, but she never responded. We were also told we could not put up a dog fence that extended onto the grass, though this rule was not posted anywhere. When booking months in advance, we requested that our sites be grouped near a cabin for one of our members— an 86-year-old woman in a wheelchair who requires oxygen. She was placed first in Cabin 5, then moved to Cabin 8 after a request for a larger and closer cabin. The second cabin was still far from our sites, down a hill and facing the woods in an unlit area, making it hazardous to reach at night, expecially for her. We also saw another camper with a rig identical to ours struggle to get into a back-in site, ultimately hitting a water faucet across the road, leaving the park without water for over two hours. These sites are simply not suitable for big rigs. While the park is clean, our overall experience was frustrating. Guests who book early, provide rig sizes, and pay for extended stays should reasonably expect sites that accommodate their camper and tow vehicle, and that group requests would be honored when possible. Large rigs should be cautious— the back-in sites are tight and maneuvering is difficult. Unfortunately, based on this visit, I cannot recommend American Heritage RV Park.

    Americamps RV Resort

    Great RV Resort

We picked Americamps because we were traveling through the Richmond area and it was very convenient to I-95. We usually pass up on RV parks because most are wide open fields with large trailers and/or motor homes parked close together and prefer more private camp spots in out teardrop. But upon our arrival we were happily surprised. Amricamps has mostly full hook up sites (about 2/3 pull through sites and a 1/3 back in) and a small tent area with a handful of sites. While the sites were close together in typical RV park style, they were not scrapping together like we’ve seen at some places and there were many well established trees to provide lots of share instead of being in an open field. All the sites were level, most were gravel, but some were concrete pads. All style sites include a picnic table and fire ring. Hook ups also included cable with about 70 channels.

Check-in was easy and the staff was very helpful. Check-in is at noon, but our road trip got us there about 11:20 and the staff had no problem letting us in early. Thanks! A host guides you to your site and assist you in positioning if needed. The campground is gated and you are provided a gate code. We stayed on site D-08 on this visit. The site was level, gravel, and had good shade.

We used the bathhouse in the main building as it was closest to our site. It was very clean and air-conditioned, which was nice on this warm summer stay. There is a second bathhouse on the property but we did not visit it.

Firewood and a good-sized camp store was available at the office. The resort has many amenities to include a heated pool, fitness center, playground, dog park, laundry, a rally room with a large deck and gas grill, dump station, and propane filling station.

We found good cell phone service with Verizon throughout the property. The campground did have wi-fi and it worked good at our site.

Pro Tip: There is a FREE breakfast every morning in the rally room. The morning we were there they were making waffles, and had bagels, pastries, fruit, and a variety of drinks to include coffee. They also had an ice cream social in the rally room the first night we were there, so watch the bulletin board for cool events like that. Additionally, right across the street (a short walk depending on where your site is in the park) there is a brewery that also serves food.

While we were hesitant to stay at a RV park, we found this place to a pleasant surprise. Very quiet and clean for its size. We’ll definitely keep this one on the list when passing through Richmond.

    Americamps RV Resort

    Great Proximity to Richmond

We’re originally from Richmond and needed a centrally located campground to spend 5 weeks in our class A while taking care of some things in town. (We’re full time travelers in our motorhome.) The location is the best in the Richmond area for a full hookup campground for a large RV. It’s right off I-95 and is mostly good size pull through sites. The kids loved the playground and pool area. The staff was friendly and put on some fun events during the time we were there like mimosas on Mother’s Day and a larger race day event with a band and food trucks. It’s a large campground but was surprisingly quiet. Very convenient to restaurants and shopping. Would certainly recommend for a quick overnight stay or if you need to visit Richmond.

    American Heritage RV Park

Good location with lots to do within an hour's drive

Usually when we go out with our trailer, the campground is basically the "destination." In this case, the campground was a place to park our "mobile motel room" so we could explore the area and do a day trip to the beach.

This was our first time staying where full hookups were standard, and we had a pull-through site on a level concrete pad. A picnic table was provided, and a metal "fire pit" will be delivered to your site if requested.

There was decent space between the sites, though of course not like what you find at a state park! But speaking of which, American Heritage RV Park is just 4 miles from York River State Park. After getting set up, we went there and we highly recommend it for nature lovers.

The campground is also close to Colonial Williamsburg, and a little over an hour away (depending on traffic) from Virginia Beach and First Landing State Park.

The bathrooms were clean, showers had hot water, and the campground was very quiet. A train comes through the area a couple of times a day (and night), but we didn't find that to be a problem.

It's close to I-64 (easy on/off) and easy to find, though the actual road INTO the campground is pretty narrow.

We chose to stay here instead of one of the campgrounds in VA Beach just because traffic in and around VA Beach is crazy. Seriously. I felt much better about just driving there with my car instead of towing the trailer through that mess.

We didn't check out the pool, but it seemed nice and we saw people swimming. Some folks we met said they'd been at the campground a week.

Be sure to ask about AARP, Good Sam, AAA, or other memberships you have because they'll give a 10% discount when you check in. We had good cell service on AT&T and Sprint networks.

While it was the most expensive place we've stayed so far, compared to an oceanfront motel room at VA Beach during peak season, it was a very good deal. We'll probably stay here again in the future.

More about this trip (and all we did in 2 days!!) is on my blog:

    Christopher Run Campground

    Great for Adults

The campground is pretty big and has a wonderful beach with swim access to the lake. Most of the campers are long time seasonal campers, and a lot even live here. The beach is well maintained and campsites are spacious. Pull through options available. The playground is for kids 5+ and there’s not much to do outside of swimming in the lake for 5 and under. People at the lake were friendly but long term campers seemed to want to have nothing to do with anyone. I’d recommend for adults and teens more so than large families with younger kiddos.

Guide to Glen Allen

RV parks near Glen Allen, Virginia offer year-round camping options with varying amenities across wooded settings. The region maintains mild spring and fall temperatures with summer highs averaging in the upper 80s, creating favorable conditions for outdoor activities throughout most of the year. Winter camping remains viable with temperatures rarely falling below freezing for extended periods.

What to do

Kayaking and water activities: At Bethpage Camp-Resort visitors have access to lake-based recreation. "We enjoyed the site Mulberry 2A that was a full hookup and a patio...backed to the lake," notes Robert P., highlighting waterfront camping options.

Historic exploration: Camp near sites related to George Washington's early life. Jason E. from Thousand Trails Harbor View mentions, "Right down the road from George Washington's birthplace," offering history buffs convenient access to significant landmarks.

Fossil hunting: Harbor View campers enjoy nearby natural areas. "We also loved going to Westmoreland park which was practically next door to Harbor View. Great trails and fossil beach was fun," shares Ariel F., describing unique outdoor exploration opportunities.

Miniature golf: Multiple campgrounds feature on-site mini golf courses for family entertainment. Michael B. at American Heritage RV Park cautions, "No fire pit or grill, so plan ahead. We went the last weekend the pool was open, which wasn't crowded at all. Casino night was a blast!"

What campers like

Family-friendly water features: American Heritage RV Park receives positive feedback for its aquatic amenities. "Great pool and convenient to travel to several activities incl Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Va Beach and more," reports Anders S., noting the strategic location for regional exploration.

Free breakfast service: Some rv parks in Glen Allen, Virginia and surrounding areas provide unexpected meal options. Steve V. at Americamps shares, "There is a FREE breakfast every morning in the rally room. The morning we were there they were making waffles, and had bagels, pastries, fruit, and a variety of drinks to include coffee."

Spacious sites with shade: Cozy Acres Campground RV Resort offers comfortable camping areas. "Level sites with brick paver pads, full hookups, RV storage, playground, pool, store, fire rings, 3 fishing ponds, awesome owners," says Jennifer B., highlighting multiple amenities at this mid-sized facility.

Proximity to brewery: Unique local attractions enhance camping experiences near Richmond. "Right across the street (a short walk depending on where your site is in the park) there is a brewery that also serves food," notes Steve V. about Americamps' convenient location.

What you should know

Military-only facilities: Richmond Family Recreation RV Camp serves a specific audience. "Small six site campground that the fire department states is never used. Nice clean level spots. Easy on and out if visiting Richmond," reports Never Sitting S., mentioning permit requirements for grills.

Seasonal considerations: Spring visitors should prepare for pollen. Ariel F. notes at Harbor View, "If you have allergies, avoid spring. EVERYTHING outside was covered in a light haze of pollen. I worked outside several days and had to wipe my computer off a couple times a day."

Variable site quality: Site assignments matter significantly. GrumpyKat K. at South Forty RV Resort & Campground experienced mixed results: "Spots were not level but were shaded... late arrival and get situated only to find the breaker broken. Maintenance moved us spots rather quickly though."

Wi-Fi performance: Internet quality varies between campgrounds. Anders S. at American Heritage RV Park notes, "And! Pretty good wifi internet. Usually its slow, but here it works!" - important information for remote workers camping in the region.

Tips for camping with families

Indoor/outdoor pool options: Thousand Trails Williamsburg offers swimming regardless of weather. "Every member of staff is very friendly and welcoming. It is a serene campground with beautiful walking trails. All the amenities for our two toddlers too... big pool outside, plus an inside pool and hottub," rachel shares.

Kid-friendly amenities: Consider locations with multiple entertainment options. Our Greight Escape describes Bethpage Camp-Resort's features: "Golf carts, mini golf, ice cream shop, friendly staff, restaurant, water park- amazing, spacious lots, very secluded, splash pad-fun for small children, small beach, kayaking available."

Seasonal activities: Holiday events enhance family camping experiences. Kathy jo M. recalls, "Our son still talks about the cardboard boat races from last season! Always clean, pool complex is great, playgrounds are a hit with our son. Sweet Justice played this year on the Saturday we were there....phenomenal band."

Fishing opportunities: Multiple locations offer angling for various ages. Glenn F. describes Cozy Acres: "They have a play area for the kids, swimming pool, several fishing ponds, bike trails and more. Bath house is very clean. The sites are a good size and laid out well."

Tips from RVers

After-hours arrival procedures: Katie G. found South Forty RV Resort accommodating for late check-ins: "I arrived after hours, but had my reservation hanging on the wall for me. Ground was pretty level and hookup was easy. The bathrooms were clean and there was a friendly maintenance guy who offered to take our garbage to the dumpster for us."

Concrete pad availability: RVers seeking optimal leveling should inquire about specific site types. At American Heritage RV Park, Sharon B. observed: "All the sites were level, most were gravel, but some were concrete pads. All style sites include a picnic table and fire ring."

Sewer connection placement: Some parks feature convenient utility layouts. Anders S. at American Heritage RV Park notes: "Sewer is in 2 locations for each site. WiFi available. Multiple kids playgrounds. Ice cream shop. Sheriff monitoring the whole facility."

Site navigation challenges: Larger rigs face maneuvering issues at some Glen Allen, Virginia RV parks. Happy_champers warns about Bethpage Camp-Resort: "Roads are tight. Golf carts were difficult to reserve. Golf carts were only available for pickup at 1/2pm the day of your rental (Kind of a waste)."
