Lake Lavon borders Wylie, Texas, creating opportunities for pet friendly camping within 30 minutes of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The area sits at approximately 500 feet above sea level with a subtropical climate that brings hot summers where temperatures regularly exceed 90°F. Most campgrounds around Wylie offer year-round access except for COE Lavon Lake Lavonia which operates seasonally from March through September.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Lake Lavon provides good fishing spots where campers can catch bass, catfish and crappie. At Erwin Park, one camper noted, "Been many times. Its great. I've had many great experiences at this park it's a ways out of the way of the city noise. The only sound other than bird song is the occasional moo and some coyote yips in the distance."
Mountain biking: The trail system at Erwin Park offers extensive single-track paths for cyclists. One visitor shared, "Great easy spot for day camping or easy car camping with family. Good fire pits and great pavilion at the group site if you can get it. Best mountain bike single tracks around with lots of built features."
Water activities: Swimming and boating are popular during warmer months. A camper at COE Lavon Lake Lavonia explained, "Nothing to knock you socks off, but it's a great campsite close to home and nice for a quick getaway. Has the feel of being somewhat remote since it's out by the lake. We've camped in the site with the horse stables and put the tents with questionable rain flys in the horse stable."
What campers like
Distance between sites: Many campgrounds provide ample space between camping spots. At Patriot RV Park, a visitor shared, "Stayed for two months for my husband's work. Park manager, Becky, was helpful and nice. They have a saltwater pool, dog park, laundry room, shower/bathrooms, trees/landscaping and access to a boat ramp."
Clean bathroom facilities: Several campgrounds maintain good restroom facilities. At Clear Lake Park, a camper reported, "Nice quiet park. Bathrooms are very clean."
Lakefront views: Many sites offer direct views of Lake Lavon. A visitor to COE Lavon Lake Lavonia noted, "Wide open spaces and beautiful lake views. The sites are far apart and lots of green space. Pavement is old and a little rough, but workable. The park host is extremely nice and helpful."
What you should know
Bathroom availability varies: Not all campgrounds provide shower facilities. At Plantation Place, a camper warned, "WARNING: NO BATHROOMS, NO SHOWERS. Quiet park with easy access to Dallas. Nice dog walking area and dog park. Full hookups. I get that RVs have bathrooms and most have showers, but never in all my years have I been to a park with no bathrooms or showers."
Maintenance issues: Several campgrounds have aging infrastructure. A reviewer at East Fork Park Campground stated, "Functional with good views. Pros: Great views of the water and wildflowers in the meadows. Reasonable price. Everything works and the shaded picnic tables are a plus. Downsides: It looks like there could be a lot of water pooled on and behind our site with a heavy rain. The pad has definitely broken up over time and isn't level."
Grass management concerns: Tall grass can be an issue at some campgrounds. One camper noted, "Great campground, electric and water. Only issue is the grass is always one high so bring a weed whip. We have family in the area, so we visit regularly and every time we stay here the grass is ridiculous otherwise I would give a 5 star!"
Tips for camping with families
Bring portable fans: Summer temperatures can reach 100°F, making fans essential for tents and RVs without air conditioning. At Alvin Lafon's RV Parks, a camper shared, "We've been residents here for three years and have been very happy. Perhaps not as many amenities, but it is a safe, secure place to stay, with a responsive, friendly staff. We are in Lafons Farm park, and it's newer, so the trees aren't real big, yet for shade."
Pack insect repellent: Mosquitoes are common near the lake, especially after rain. A camper at Erwin Park mentioned, "Erwin Park is a great place to visit if you're looking to spend a few days running or biking trails. Campsites are far enough apart that you have privacy yet close enough that you don't feel alone."
Plan for limited shade: Many sites lack mature trees. A visitor to The Waters noted, "This used to be under another name, but is under new management. The park is now under construction, with a laundry building coming soon. 30 spots. Nice catch and release pond."
Tips from RVers
Check pad conditions: Many RV sites have aging asphalt or concrete pads. A visitor to East Fork Park Campground observed, "Enjoyed a night here. Nice, clean, open RV park on Lake Lavon. It's well established but in good shape. Big level RV sites with grills and covered tables."
Size considerations: Some parks have limitations on larger rigs. An RVer at The Waters advised, "This park is mostly fifth wheels and travel trailers. While our almost 40' Class A fit on the pad, if we had anything larger than our Jeep Wrangler as a tow would not have fit in our spot. Really meant for 30' if you have a pickup truck to tow."
Plan for water conservation: Not all pet friendly camping near Wylie offers sewer connections. At Plantation Place, a camper shared, "Stayed for about a month. Very nice and the staff is friendly. Has laundry facilities, 30/50 amp hookups, water, sewer, back-ins and pull-throughs. Has a nice pond and pet friendly."
