East Fork Park Campground provides equestrian-friendly options approximately 20 miles southeast of Wylie on Lake Lavon. The campground features 50/30 amp electric hookups with aging asphalt pads for RVs and designated tent sites. Water access points along the lake offer opportunities for fishing and boating activities, though visitors should note the variable maintenance conditions reported throughout different seasons.
What to do
Trail riding: Lake Ray Roberts offers extensive bridle trails at Johnson Branch Campsites with terrain suitable for various skill levels. "Riders connect directly to bridle trails from the camping area, providing convenient access for daily rides through varied terrain including lakefront views, wooded sections, and open meadows," according to regular visitors.
Fishing: Multiple access points at East Fork Park Campground provide shoreline fishing opportunities. "We had a nice view of Lake Lavon. There are trees - some large enough to provide some shade if desired, but most small enough to allow satellite reception. The sites are well spaced," notes Ray & Terri F.
Boating: Launch points at Pilot Knoll Park Campground allow for direct water access. "Calm water, large lot land area and clean, easy access to walk right into the lake to swim, and space to dock your boat make the cove side of the park an excellent score," writes Monica C.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Sites at Isle du Bois Campsites provide privacy between camping areas. "The sites vary from being 20 feet from the parking lot to half a mile out or so, but most people flock to the more formal campsites and miss out thinking they'll have to hike in at Hawthorne," notes Gretchen N., highlighting the range of site types available.
Wildlife viewing: Equestrian camping areas offer chances to observe local wildlife. "We have car camped on a few occasions here and each time we saw plenty of deer around camp," reports Matt S. about their experience at Isle du Bois Campsites.
Lake views: Many sites at East Fork Park Campground feature direct views of Lake Lavon. "Great views of the water and wildflowers in the meadows. Reasonable price. Everything works and the shaded picnic tables are a plus," shares Melanie and Doug G.
What you should know
Variable maintenance: Lawn care at East Fork Park Campground may be inconsistent. "Great campground, electric and water. Only issue is the grass is always one high so bring a weed whip. We have family in the area, so we visit regularly and every time we stay here the grass is ridiculous," advises Suzann E.
Road conditions: Access roads at several campgrounds require careful navigation. "The roads are in need of repair, with numerous potholes, some very large, but the attendant did say that the park was on the CoEs list for repairs," reports Ray & Terri F. about East Fork Park.
Site selection strategies: When planning equestrian camping near Wylie, consider site placement for horse care. "If you're picking a site in this camp area, #117 is right off the trail and nearest to the community restrooms. Sites 119-122 are right on the lake so you can see ducks and do some bank fishing without needing to go anywhere," advises Christopher L.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Loyd Park provides play areas for children between camping sessions. "The other nice thing from our site, was that we were about 1/4 mile from a little playground for the kids. The playground wasn't anything grand, but it broke up the days for the kids some, which as all parents know is a gift," notes Chris H.
Horse education: Equestrian camping provides opportunities for children to learn about horses. "It was very windy but we had loads of fun! We learned what native plants we can eat!" shares Sarah E. about their Cub Scout trip to Johnson Branch Campsites.
Swimming areas: Designated swim zones offer safe water access. "The park has a big beach, park area to enjoy. Staff is friendly," reports TJ & Laura S. about Loyd Park's facilities for families.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Prepare for uneven sites at several campgrounds. "The pad has definitely broken up over time and isn't level. The fire pit is also sitting at an angle," warns Melanie and Doug G. about East Fork Park Campground.
Hookup location: Power connections may require extension cords at COE Lavon Lake Lavonia. "Doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles but does have sewer, lake views, wide open spaces, and clean! Great food places nearby. Only drawbacks are unlevel sites and front gates don't open til 10am every morning," notes Natalie S.
Storage options: Limited space for equipment means planning ahead. "Trailer parking accommodates various sizes with pull-through options available at select sites," according to regular equestrian campers at Ray Roberts Lake State Park.
