This is a great primitive beach area. There is adequate parking at this ramp. This is one of the three ramps on the lake that are functional when the lake drops to 16 feet low. Steele Creek Park is a Corps of Engineering park which offers primitive camping and there are limited facilities in the Park. The park is located just south of Morgan and Lakeside Marina. It is an open access Park. There are two primary areas of the park. The first is on the river channel side of the park and is on the north side of the Steele Creek Park. This area has great camp sites on a bluff overlooking the lake. This side also has some good natural beach area below the camp sites. The southern section of the park overlooks Steele Creek itself. This is a brushy creek and while there is some swimming areas available, it is not as swim friendly as the other side. Each side of the park has a boat ramp. This is a remote park area and is patrolled on some frequency by the Sheriff’s Department. Boat launching is FREE at both ramps.

The six flags of all jellystones

We are from Houston and I opt to drive 4 hours to this one in burleson. Waller is good fun but that park does not compare to this site. The website doesn’t do burleson/n Texas jellystone justice for how good it actually is. Bring bikes!

A lot of fun and learning

This is one of the better parks Texas has to offer just in terms of the hiking and unique features. Along the water there are places where you can see dinosaur footprints in the rock. There is also a river to play in and miles of amazing hiking. If you want to camp, you need to book plenty in advance since the park is so popular.

    Meridian State Park Campground

All time favorite in the Texas State Parks!

Meridian SP is such a hidden gem. If you’re not a fan of the Texas heat they just added one limited use cabin in addition to RV, tent and screened shelter sites. The BEST place to stay is the shelters on the lake hands down! There is also a CCC building at this park that serves as a gathering area on the lakeshore. It has several well maintained trails and the lake is good for fishing. Wildflower season here is CRAZY!

    Go back in time...

Dinosaur Valley lives up to its name! Anyone can easily access the river and see the dinosaur footprints this park is know for. Dinosaur Valley has trails for the experienced hiker and family oriented as well as plenty of room along the river to swim and escape the Texas heat. Campsites are a good size and offer shade. I’ve been many many times and keep coming back! It’s also nice for you dog!

    Lake Whitney

This park is a great go-to if you live in Texas – centrally located and quick to access from most major cities. It can get crowded on high weekends in the spring/fall, but there are ample campsites if you plan ahead a bit. Sites 39-46 in the Horseshoe Loop are ideal for quiet spots away from people, but if you want space along the water, Lakeview and Sunset Ridge are the best picks. There are a few short trails in the park but exploring the waterfront can't be beat!

Kid Friendly Swimming Hole - Educational, too!

This is a great place to bring kids. There is an on-site store, as well as galleries that talk about what it was like when dinosaurs roamed N Texas. The tracks don’t disappoint! There is also a great swimming spot at the first track site.

The drive-in campgrounds aren’t very private... and the tails around the campground make it easy for people to walk through your site. Something to keep in mind if you camp with your pets, or want privacy.

    Everyone should that nice!

From the moment we spoke to them on the phone late in the afternoon, to the moment we left the next morning, these were the kindess people we have met in Texas. The facilities and grounds are clean and very fresh looking. The only issue i might mention, if it not a sacrilege to add a negative thought is that the noise from the highway does not belong there. But I sure am glad we found on the side of the highway.

    Lake Whitney State Park Campground

Come Hell or High Water We Are Camping

We had limited weekends to take the grandkids camping. It has been raining non stop all over Texas. I began to look for places within 2 hours of Fort Worth. Texas State Parks are a great. I settled on Lake Whitney. They have these shelter sites that are awesome. For $30 per night ($10 per night more than normal e&w site) plus $5 per adult gate fee. That may not be economical for everyone, but $40 for an overnight camp was fine. The shelters are very clean and well kept. Inside is a picnic table and enough floor space for another plus some. So if your tent fails in you go. The top of walls are screened and bottom solid. I set up my camp kitchen and we ate meals inside due to weather. We set up our large tent behind the shelter to block wind from the lake. The site also had it's own parking, another table outside and fire ring. We had site 4 right across from the lake and swimming area. The bath house was very clean and only a short walk. You can fish license free from the shore. There are 5 or 6 moderate hiking trails. Also the park is home to plenty of woodland animals. The 4 yo and I took a 2 am bathroom break and saw a herd of dear about 30 head.

The park is very good for families and fishing.

There are also a boat ramp, small airstrip and day use areas.

    The staff is awesome.

The Outdoor Family Program is Fantastic!

We had a blast participating in the Texas Outdoor Family camping program!! We learned how to cook with Dutch ovens, went geocaching and found dinosaur footprints in the river. It was truly a wonderful experience. Even when it got cold and we had a hard time starting our fire, the amazing park rangers came over to help us get a blaze going. We’ve recommended this site to many friends already and will definitely return. Great for families with kiddos who are especially into dinosaurs!

    Steele Creek Park

    Lake View, Toilets, Water, Free

Peaceful Army Corps of Engineer park with 12 sites, half are shaded. Clean vault toilets, dumpsters, and water between most sites, covered picnic tables and fire pits, a few have stand up grills. Some locals take the sites for day use fishing so those might open up towards evening. Entry gate closes at 10pm, but there is an exit gate always open. My visit was during a Texas’ rainy stretch and lake levels were on the rise flooding out the lower sites. In fact, the ACE host had me move with expected 10’ rise overnight. I’d been in trouble if I hadn’t. Thanks Mark!!

    Safe overnight

We are headed south. I look for spots close to interstate. The park is clean, well kept and no appearance of lost long timers. The attendant put us in spot 59 across the street from the dog park. But more importantly a big open field with a walking path around it. Made our fur babies happy. I get in a hurry when we are moving again so we did not try the breakfast. I'm sure it was great. Definitely, a place to stop along Texas I-35 south of Dallas.

Dinosaur Valley State Park — Dinosaur Valley State Park

    Who doesn't love dinosaurs?!

"Dinosaurs may be extinct from the face of the Earth, but they are alive and well in our imaginations."

This Texas state parks is one of favorites. I have been quite a few times since I was a kid and it never gets old. It is just inside of Glen Rose, Texas, located along the Paluxy river. This park will bring out your inner child.

Let's start with the facilities. Sosome of the bathrooms are old, but they are well maintained even with all the traffic. This park gets very busy in the summer. So we tent camped but we stayed at an RC site because they don't have water only sites and with a 4 year old and my grandmother, I didn't want to have a walk-in (no bathrooms nearby) or a backpack site. There is quite a bit of shade around the campsites, and there are awesome playgrounds for children.

Now there are a LOT of trails. They will give you a map that is very helpful and let's you know where all of the track sites and overlooks are. The main track sites are along the river and are so cool see! There is also information things everywhere that tell you about the tracks that were excavated so make sure to check those out!

The one problem I had was that we went during a drought, so the river is very low and makes it hard to view some of the tracks, also swimming was a bust. So make sure you check the river advisory on their website to see what your getting into. Especially in the hotter months you definitely want to get in the river to cool off.

This place is larger than life, so make sure you plan your hikes beforehand. My favorite trail is the Buckeye trails. It is about 2 miles, so good for kids, and it is up through the woods. Lots of shade and variety in the path. Don't miss out on this adventure.

    North Texas Jellystone

    A family favorite

We love this Jellystone! We are full time travelers with young kids and they love this RV park. There are sooo many fun activities (be warned, the cost can add up). The staff is super friendly and very helpful. The adjoining water park is a blast. We prefer the older part because of the trees that offer shade in the hot Texas sun, but the red carpet sites are so much better for big rigs. We’ve stayed in both and would probably choose the red carpet sites for our 44’ rig. One thing that I love is how much they are putting into expansion, we look forward to visiting again when the construction is done. Anyhow, there are some cons, but not worth mentioning considering how much good exists at this fun park!

State Park in my back yard

Best camping ground ever! Bathrooms and restrooms are newly remodeled, everything is clean and organized. Every camp spot has its own water source and electricity hookup, makes a huge difference at the hot Texas summer days and perfect for spending the nights not in a complete dark in case you’re using only a tent without a generator. The trails are great even in the Texan summer as many of them are beside the river where you can cool off. Highly recommended for families with kids all ages!

Yes- There Were Real Dinosaurs Here!! Great State Park

On my quest to visit many different Texas State Parks, this one was a great one and one that I would surely return to! The dinosaurs that were here some 100 million years ago intrigued me as well as the beauty of the park itself. My visit was in November and the weather was great. This park offers many hiking trails of different degrees of difficulty as well as access to biking on most of the trails. The campsites were reasonably spacious and  private. The sites on the outside of the loop offer the most privacy and are typically larger. The bathroom facilities have been updated and are very clean and well maintained. I found the staff to be very friendly and offered great advice on where to hike and to photograph for great views. And yes, seeing the actual dinosaur footprints was an easy hike. It was really amazing to stand and see something so real that actually happened so long ago!!

    Liberty Hill Park Campground

Really Nice Campground, BUT my God the ants!

Liberty hill is a very beautiful campground but there is a serius issue with the invasive Argentian ant. This is a great campground to spend a few days or weeks relaxing and catching fish. Lake Navarro Mills is well know as the best Crappie fishing lake in Texas. Navarro Mills Liberty Hill Park features a fantastic fishing barge that is covered allowing you to fish no matter the weather. Our visit to Liberty Hill Park at Navarro Mills Lake was a real treat with one minor exception, Argentine Ants, these can be a real issue when RV camping at Liberty Hill Park as this invasive species is out of control at Liberty Hill Park. More attention to sanitation, park it self is nice

First the bad. The restrooms/shower's are not on the priority list, not cleaned regularly and to think we're dealing with COVID. Privacy curtains at the showers were missing. The soap holder in the shower was dirty on Tuesday 7/26/'21when we arrived and was still dirty when we left that Friday 7/30/'21, so was the left behind shampoo bottle. We had to clean our camping area from dog poop left behind and there were flies al over the area. The only place you could find dog baggies was at the office/Headquarters, even there in front of the Headquarters, we picked up dog poop left behind, laying there for a couple of days, so we could sit on the bench and use the Wifi. We were shocked to find this at a Texas State Park. The good. The park is great👍, nice walking and biking trails and the and the lake was beautiful, fishing🐠, kayaking🚣 and swimming🏊‍♀️. If you love nature this is a nice to visit.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars for the Park itself. Lake Whitney State Park Campground

    Quiet

We made reservations 92 days prior to arriving Thursday of the Columbus Day weekend for Horseshoe Loop full-hook-up site, which is a nice elm tree grove. With the Texas State Park Pass, we paid$21/nightly. Our spacious pull-thru site was partially shaded, but there is no vegetation between sites in this loop, so not one site had any privacy from another. Site surface was mostly gravel from deteriorating asphalt. Our site had a deteriorating concrete picnic table on a concrete slab and a fire pit with a grilling grate. There is a possibility that trees make could make site access difficult to deploy slide outs. We witness larger rigs getting creative with pulling into their site because of close trees. Quiet campground with no highway noise. There is no gate closure overnight. This is an excellent dark sky campground, but unfortunately during our stay surrounding campers had excessive outdoor lighting illuminated throughout their site most of the night, which inhibited good star glazing and Draconid meteor shower viewing. Shower/toilet facilities for this loop were clean, but heavily worn and not ADA compliant. Besides a small step into the structure, the women’s had 3 equally sized toilet stalls and 2 equally sized shower stalls neither with any safety grab bars. There are no sites in this loop that are lake front. A few sites can just see the lake from a distance. Trash dumpsters are placed on roadway edge making safe rig egress tricky. AT&T 1 bar coverage in this campground loop. No wildlife sightings during our 4 night stay. Campfire wood available for sale from“lockers” at the Park Headquarters building. Dinosaur Valley State Park — Dinosaur Valley State Park

    Adventures Await

This is absolutely one of my favorite State Parks and campgrounds I’ve ever been to. I have been visiting this park & campground since I was a child. I’ve camped, tube rafted the river, played in the water, found all the dinosaur tracks (yes, real actual dinosaurs were here) and hiked all the trails numerous times. I have never had a bad experience here. Always lots to do and I end up finding at least one new thing every time I go. The campsites are pretty secluded by trees for privacy. They are clean, well maintained and each have a fire pit and picnic table. There are tent sites as well as full hook-up sites. The public restroom & showers are always clean & well kept. The absolute best thing about this place is that you can actually touch and stand on a REAL dinosaur track!!! There are signs explaining which dinosaur left each particular track and giving all the information about the individual dinosaur and the time frame they lived there. It’s really cool, even for an adult. The water is always clear and cool. There are several swimming “holes” that are very refreshing, one even has a cliff you can jump off of into it because it’s deep & safe. The hiking is superb, with nice groomed trails and beautiful scenery. Easy enough for children but still challenging enough for the adults due to the elevation changes. The outlooks are spectacular views. I see why the dinosaur’s chose to live there. The town of Glen Rose is right down the road and they have stores for anything you might’ve forgotten or need. Also, the town has several good restaurants if you want a night off from cooking. You can’t go wrong with this State Park & campground. I can’t find one negative thing about it. Pure Texas Perfection!!

    Thousand Trails Lake Whitney

A Campground for full time RV..ers

    • Sites are first come first serve - there is no holding sites especially if you are going as a group
    • No open fires - only propane or charcoal
    • Bathrooms were nice, clean and air conditioned...definitely a couple of notches above the Texas State Parks
    • No wildlife here...just the human kind
    • Nice shady sites but not a lot of elbow room (pretty cramped)
    • Take lots of allergy medicine if you are allergic to Red Cedar
    • 30 AMP sites with full hook ups
    • A lot of kids activities - water melon eating contest, face painting, etc.
    • Could see a lot of stars in the night sky
    • Don't hang anything from the trees..will get in trouble
    • No place to hang a garbage bag outside
    • Overflowing trash dumpsters
    • Propane filling station on the campground property
    • Cell service with T-Mobile was sparse. Verizon seemed to work fine.

We got a free Thousand Trails membership from the dealership when we purchased our new camper so we decided to use it for Labor Day at Lake Whitney RV Campgrounds. We went with our camping buddies (theDyrt Ranger Jenny S and family) who also pulled their camper. The sites are first come first serve and there is no holding sites, so if you go as a group finding sites that are together is tough (several sites were bagged and not usable).  We picked Sites #6 and #83 on Loop B. Luckily these sites back up to each other and the kids could roam between the two sites. The sites were 30 AMPs with full hooks up and that part was nice. Didn't have to watch tank levels every time someone (kids) flushed.

The campsites were pretty shady with red cedar trees which created havoc with my son's allergies. Poor kid was stuffed up the entire time we were there. The sites were pretty cramped, we were not able to extend our awning without hitting the tree branches. The road inside the campground is pretty beat up with lot of bumps. The amenities were nice - a family swimming pool, shuffleboard, washers, putt-putt golf. The campgrounds had several activities for Labor Day such as a water melon eating contest, frozen T-shirt contest which kept the kids entertained.

Don't hang anything on the trees. We had some LED light up and the park ranger had us take it down.  Was actually a little harsh about it. Following that encounter we took down the clothesline that we strung up to dry our swimming suits and wet towels. No place to hang a garbage bag either.

Politeness in customer service was hit or miss.

Our stay was free because of the Thousand Trails membership but otherwise each site goes for about $45/night. I'll do it again for free, if I have to pay...I will go down the street at Lake Whitney State Park for $25 with full hookups.

    Steele Creek Park

    Brazos River Gem

Love this COE campground located off of Lake Whitney, open year round. About an hour from Fort Worth and Waco. Most sites are heavily shaded, with plenty of solar charging, too. Each site has a table (most are covered), with fire pits. Water is spaced evenly between sites. Both loops have pit toilets and dumpsters, as well as a boat launch. Popular place to launch and lots of day use. Flies can be a nuisance. T-mobile service is great. We were able to get work and attend virtual classes.

    Steele Creek Park

    Fantastic lakeside overlook

We pulled up about 8pm and snagged one of the northern campsites just in time to watch the sunset over the water from our elevated overlook.

We only stayed the one night but it was a quiet spot with trees on all sides and a small covered bench table and plenty of parking for two-three small vehicles or one larger camper.

Fantastic sunrise and sunset in September!

    10/10 Primitive Camping

Gorgeous view of the lake with nearby restroom. Drive a bit further than the pinned location towards the lake on the right. I saw a few other tenters, car campers, and RVs. Great cell phone reception and awesome lakeside table. Doesn’t get much better than this!
