Austin Lone Star RV Community provides 136 sites with 50-amp electric, water, and sewer connections on level pads suitable for larger RVs. "Each site feels spacious and comes with its own picnic table and full hook-ups," according to one visitor who appreciated the privacy created by surrounding vegetation. La Hacienda RV Resort & Cottages accommodates big rigs with 50-amp service and concrete pads, while Oak Forest RV Park offers similar amenities plus year-round availability. River Forest Haven maintains 54 sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp options on more rustic settings, though without sewer hookups at individual sites.

    Inks Lake State Park Campground

Great getaway in Texas Hill Country - May 2018

Catching up on my reviews…Inks Lake SP is a superb park about 40 minutes from Austin in the Texas Hill Country.  Great lake with a large no wake zone in one area that makes it very family friendly and paddler friendly.  There are sites away from the NWZ that allow you to ski/tube right from your campsite.  Great choice of flat, easy access spots.  Tent-only spots with only water are available as-well.   Decent hiking and easy biking around the park is available.  The area around Devil's Hole is great for floating about and jumping from the rocks.  Just wish that folks would clean up after themselves better.  Great camp store with lots of products.  Lake was lowered in 2019 to update the docks and boat ramps (very nice now), lake is back to normal seasonal levels.  ILSP is close to Austin, so it stays busy during the season, so reserve well ahead of time.  No Wifi at the campsites, but decent mobile reception (ATT).  30/50 amp and water at most sites.  Fire ring and table on concrete pads at all sites.  Tables are not covered, however.  I've been told that there is Wifi available at the camp store, but I cannot personally verify that.

    Cedar Breaks Park

    Beautiful big sites

The sites are large which means you aren't right on top of your neighbors. Lots of shade. Each site has its own shelter with picnic table, grill and fire pit. Electric and water but no sewer. The sites along the outside of the loop have lake views and are level. The sites along the inside are scary unlevel! Some of the big rigs were backed in and jacked up 4 feet or so in front. Saw a lady break her ankle stepping out of her camper. Be prepared to level your camper! I suggest odd numbers 19-35 and even numbers 36-42 as the most level sites with the best lake views.

The park has hiking trails, boating and swimming access, but none of these are accessed right at the camp area.

Restrooms are very basic with no hot water. They were clean but a little creepy for showers. I used the toilets there during the day and my camper shower and toilet at night.

    Jellystone Park™ Austin North

    Dream campground

Amazing resort. Great monthly rate. They go above and beyond with their amenities providing an indoor play room, full kitchen, business center, etc. Very family friendly resort with plenty of activities planned. Lots of full time families staying here long term which makes for a fun time. The one downside was that we didn’t get the sites that we had put a deposit down for. There seems to be a lot of turnover in the office so when we checked in it wasn’t the same lady who had helped us pick out our sites and reserve them. We travel with my parents and always try to stay next to them but they were unwilling to accommodate that even though they originally told us they would. All in all I do recommend this park for the amazing ambiance and amenities.

Hill Country RV Resort & Cottage Rentals

Nice Park with little room between sites

The park it’s self is nice and clean.  Staff for the most part is friendly and nice.  The pool is a hopping place over summer break and on the weekends when it’s warm.  RV sites are tight in the daily/weekly sites and parking your 40+ foot rig and tow vehicle in the spot are probably not happening.  They do have over flow parking and depending on your site it could be a good walk.

They are pet friendly and have several dog parks and potty areas through out the park.  The laundry room is like no other I’ve ever been too.  All machines operate via debit/credit cards, no more quarters!!

Over all we enjoyed our stay and would recommend this park for monthly stays or in one of their top tier sites for daily/weekly stays.

    Summit Vacation Resort

    Texas Camping at its finest

We loved the quiet and peace of this RV Resort nestled in Texas Hill Country.

The Park: they have a large pool area with cafe and snacks. The property is large and spaces are spread out through out the park. The big draw is the Guadalupe River, Canyon Lake, and the woods and hills.

They have hot shoes, bath houses, laundry.

The sites: Gravel and mostly level, very few sites were unlevel. You’re surrounded by hills so it is nice and quiet. They are full hook up sites. Each site had a fire ring and picnic table. Small deer herds would move through the park each evening. Many of the campers feed them corn and they know the sounds and come running out of the hills.

The campground is near grocery and hardware stores. Within an hour are several bigger towns with more stores.

Cellular: T-Mobile was decent but not great. They do have Campground WiFi that worked faster.

    Sienna Ridge RV Park

Great quiet park for those not looking for a lot of extra amenities

Quiet clean park with great, friendly staff.  $17 a day is based on $525 monthly rate. Common bath house and laundry is always clean and ready to use. No amenities such as pool or hot tub or overhead RV shades. Wide, mostly level, gravel pull thru and back in sites. Sites up on the hill get a nice breeze and feel secluded. Many are monthly residents but all RVs and spots are kept clean and friendly! Close to the lake, local rivers and 20min drive to New Braunfels. Sitting right in hill country gives amazing views and drives in all directions.

    Sunset RV Park

    Peace in Hill Country

I typically rate campgrounds as they fit into 1 of 5 categories. This campground will be rated as a Basecamp — grounds that offer a comfortable home base that you’re happy to return to after a day of exploring the surrounding area. Ratings for this category are based on: Value to cost: 5 Overall grounds: 4 Utility of sites (hookups, layout, accessibility): 4 Local Attraction Proximity: 4 Reservation Process/Ease of Getting a Site: 5 Amenities: 4 Customer Service: 5 Cleanliness: 4

A really lovely spot in Dripping Springs, Sunset RV Park is a small park in Hill Country outside Austin (this is not the one near Lake Travis). It’s clear that this is a destination spot for snowbirds to the area as most everyone was set-up for a long-term stay and we saw very few folks come and go during our one-week stay. The park is very quiet with close attention paid to COVID precautions (this is the first park we encountered that was 100% contact free check in).

The park is built somewhat into a hill, so some of the turns are a little tricky and our spot was a bit uneven. The space itself was a very wide asphalt driveway with a picnic table and metal fire ring below a stone wall, perhaps a bit close to our neighbors as I wasn’t totally certain it was definitely ours to use.

The amenities are pretty basic- clean laundry and bathrooms and a good enough wifi signal to allow us to use the internet easily. There’s also propane available on site. I enjoyed the layout of the grounds and each site was afforded some privacy thanks to the set-up and tiered spaces. The weekly rate of $300 was very reasonable.

Excellent access to Hamilton Pool (make reservations!), Reimers Ranch and Westcave Discovery Center. Also about 30 minutes to most of Austin including SoCo, McKinney Falls SP and 6th Street.

Reservations were made by phone with a very friendly woman and, as I mentioned, check in was contactless, so we really didn’t encounter anyone else aside from a friendly wave from folks maintaining the grounds in golf carts. The place is a nice find outside Austin and very close by to family for us, so we’re happy to have found it and will return!

Canyon Lake Military - Randolph AFB

We love it here. Not for everyone.

We started with day passes, then graduated to renting out the loft cabins, then tried tent camping, and eventually and recently parked our travel trailer in the reservable RV spaces. All in the same vicinity. Made great memories at each stay.

Pro’s: Best rate in town for military (active, retired, $ disabled). Water is beautiful. Fishing can be fantastic. Lots of water activities available for rent or bring your own. Pet friendly, Great for families, most people are very respectful and wonderful to talk to. Good food and stores nearby. Lots of wildlife. Quiet. Close to town and short drive from San Antonio.

Cons: Hard to get ahold of staff to make reservations. Market is extremely expensive and staff isn’t very friendly. Lost and lots of fire ants.

We recommend it to all of our friends and family and bring them often. We love staying in the loft cabins. Some are pet friendly. We have stayed in the mobile homes on the other side of the lake once but that was not a great experience as our things were stolen off our table and covered patio (on Veterans Day) and they were only left unattended for 15 min or less. The mobile home wasn’t very nice but functional at least.

Guide to The Hills

Dispersed camping options near The Hills, Texas surround Lake Travis and the central Texas Hill Country. This region sits at approximately 900 feet above sea level with notable limestone outcroppings and juniper forests. Summer temperatures consistently reach above 95°F from June through September, with cooler winters averaging 40-60°F.

What to do

Lake activities at Pace Bend Park: Explore the 9-mile shoreline with multiple swimming coves and boat ramps 30 minutes from The Hills. "We stayed 2 weeks at the end of February. Very clean, well maintained, didn't feel too crowded on neighbors," notes a visitor at La Hacienda RV Resort.

Visit downtown Austin: Take advantage of RV parks located within 15 minutes of central Austin. According to one camper at Pecan Grove RV Park, "We were able to ride our bikes to Congress bridge to view the bats, to the trails of Barton Creek beltway, the Barton springs pool and lots more."

Experience Hill Country breweries: Several small breweries operate within minutes of campgrounds. "Small brewery less than a mile down the road," mentions a reviewer about camping near La Hacienda RV Resort.

What campers like

Peaceful settings: Many parks offer quiet environments despite proximity to urban areas. "The park is quiet and secure. Office staff were very nice and accommodating. Sites are cement with fire pit and picnic table," reports a guest at Austin Lone Star RV Community.

Water recreation options: Tubing, fishing and swimming access at multiple locations. "We really enjoyed tubing and fishing, but the campfires were the best. The staff will deliver a generous amount of dry fire wood for $15," writes a River Forest Haven reviewer.

Good cellular connectivity: Reliable service at most RV parks allows remote work. "Excellent WiFi as well," notes a camper at Big Oaks RV Park, which offers full hookups just northwest of Austin near Cedar Park.

What you should know

Gate security systems: Many parks employ security measures for guest safety. "Very secure, codes used to enter gate, pool, showers/restrooms & 24hour laundry room," reports a visitor to Austin Lone Star RV Community.

Reservation timing: Some parks book completely during peak seasons. A Hill Country Lakes RV Campground visitor advises, "We stayed overnight to shakedown our new to us popup camper. Cozy place, awesome community fire pit and super friendly owners/staff."

Road noise considerations: Highway proximity affects sound levels at certain parks. "If your site is close to the interstate, you may hear some road noise, but it didn't bother us," mentions a camper at Austin Lone Star RV Community.

Variable site conditions: Expect significant differences between sites at the same facility. "Super cool to get tucked into the woods. Some of the spots are secluded and others aren't," notes a visitor at River Forest Haven, which maintains 54 sites with varying privacy levels.

Tips for camping with families

Check for seasonal activities: Many campgrounds offer different programming throughout the year. "Every night they have something going on and they send a text each day with activities. They text you when you get a shipment," reports a camper at Austin Lone Star RV Community.

Look for parks with dedicated children's areas: Some facilities offer playgrounds and open spaces. "Family of 5, Grandma, Mom & 3 teenage boys, well organized, had after hours packet ready that was a pleasure to have. Clear and with tag for the truck," writes a visitor to Austin Lone Star RV Community.

Consider dog-friendly facilities: Most parks accommodate pets with designated areas. "We chose a recommended campground and were completely satisfied. The space was spacious, the nature was beautiful, and most importantly, my dog was free to run around," notes a visitor at Austin Lone Star RV Community.

Tips from RVers

Choose concrete pads when available: Gravel sites may require additional leveling. "Our spot is gravel and level. Not too many empty spots! We have a nice table outside and a small grill. Large trees at all the spots provide shade," notes a camper at Pecan Grove RV Park.

Check facility age before booking: Some parks have newer sections with better amenities. "Two sections, older for permanent or long term; newer well spaced, sites toward office. Five star private bathrooms, pool areas are clean and well kept," shares an Oak Forest RV Park visitor.

Verify site size requirements: Larger RVs need specific accommodations. "Sites are nice distance from one another and nice size. Fit our 43' Motorhome with dolly," reports a camper at Austin Lone Star RV Community.
