Benbrook Lake offers campers 7,630 acres of water surface with lakefront sites and water recreation opportunities. Temperatures in the area range from average highs of 95°F in summer to lows of 35°F in winter, making fall and spring the most comfortable camping seasons. Benbrook camping areas sit at approximately 700 feet elevation with terrain characterized by rolling hills and scattered oak trees.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Rocky Creek Park provides prime fishing spots along Benbrook Lake. "[The lake] tends to dry up in the summer, but when flooded, can garner some big bass. Better kayak area than boat area," notes camper Rob C.
Wildlife watching: North Texas Jellystone Park features a small petting zoo and numerous wildlife viewing areas. "We have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 73 for 1 night in mid September... There were lots of deer that wandered through our part of the CG," reports Ray & Terri F. at Holiday Park Campground.
Water recreation: Loyd Park offers swimming and boating access close to the DFW area. "Joe Pool lake is part of park. It's a big park, lots of good spaces... They have a big beach, park area to enjoy. Staff is friendly," writes camper TJ & Laura S.
What campers like
Spacious sites: COE Benbrook Lake Mustang Park Bear Creek Campground offers well-separated sites with natural surroundings. "The campsites offered some privacy as they were spaced pretty far apart. Lots of shade trees and very peaceful," writes Cindy M.
Peaceful environment: Cedar Hill State Park provides a natural retreat despite proximity to urban areas. "The park is designed with small loops for 15-20 camp sites in each loop. Very little traffic right by the individual spots. Easy in and out of park," explains Michael C.
Level camping pads: Cowtown RV Park provides well-maintained concrete sites. "The host bends over backwards to make your stay pleasurable, Larry escorted us to our pull through cement location and made sure we had everything we needed," explains Patrice S.
What you should know
Seasonal closures: Some Benbrook Lake parks close temporarily due to flooding or maintenance. "Park is nice but closed again," notes John T. about Rocky Creek Park.
Bathroom facilities: Facilities vary widely across area campgrounds. "The bathrooms are a little scary, but the price and the view of the lake made up for it. Nice and friendly staff," explains Tammy T. about Holiday Park.
Fire restrictions: Treetops RV Resort allows fires in designated areas, but many parks implement seasonal burn bans. "We had a fire pit and picnic table. The bath houses are nice and private," notes Jessica F., who also mentioned the park's clean facilities.
Tips for camping with families
Family-oriented activities: North Texas Jellystone offers structured entertainment for children. "We stopped by for the night after visiting the state park to meet up with some friends and I'm so glad we took the detour! The site was a little tight... but the campground was a different world. Yogi bear's world really... My friends kids had a blast," shares Danielle R.
Swimming areas: Loyd Park provides beach access and swimming options for families. "Great bike trails. Friendly staff and lovely sites, each pretty secluded from eachother. Also they have electric and water hookups," explains Cactus A.
Playground access: Several parks feature play equipment for children. "We stayed for a few nights while traveling through Fort Worth and enjoyed this park. It was a great location, quiet and had a playground for our kids," explains Emily R. about Cowtown RV Park.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Holiday Park offers varied site options for different RV needs. "This site had 50 amp electric and water. Park was very well kept, grass mowed and cover over picnic table. This site had little to no shade, ac had to work very hard. Would not recommend this site in summer time," advises Arvis C.
Low branches: Watch for low-hanging branches when navigating certain campgrounds. "The registration card says to watch for branches if your RV is over 12' tall, but there were several branches much lower than that leaving site 73. We were able to navigate to avoid most of them, but one was unavailable, so be advised," warns Ray & Terri F.
Connectivity options: Most parks offer varying levels of internet access. "AT&T coverage was pretty good with 2 bars of LTE service and speeds up to 17 MB/s. We had a clear view to the N at the site, so Starlink was fine with speeds up to 20 MB/s," notes Ray & Terri F. at Holiday Park Campground.
