Dispersed camping opportunities exist throughout the North Central Texas region surrounding Benbrook. The area features gently rolling terrain with elevations ranging from 650 to 1,100 feet above sea level. Most free camping sites remain accessible year-round, though summer temperatures regularly exceed 95°F while winter nights can drop below freezing.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Hunter Park offers lakefront access with productive fishing spots. "A cute little park with lots of picnic tables, a pier, and a huge field. If you're a fisher, this is the place to be! The fish are active," reports one Hunter Park visitor.
Hiking trails: The grasslands contain numerous unmarked paths and animal trails for exploration. "Great hiking. Downloadable hiking maps availability on other apps," notes a camper at LBJ National Grasslands Forest Road 904.
Wildlife viewing: Multiple species can be observed throughout the day and night. "See deer, armadillos, hogs, and birds," explains a camper about the diverse wildlife present in the grasslands.
What campers like
Waterfront sites: Chisholm Trail Park provides direct water access. "Camp at the Water! Fall asleep to the sound of crickets and jumping fish, occasional coyote howls. Each spot has its own Ramada and picnic table," shares a Chisholm Trail Park reviewer.
Spacious camping areas: The dispersed sites throughout the grasslands offer ample space between campers. "We spotted 22 sites, there may be more. The sites are a good distance between them," explains a camper at LBJ National Grasslands.
Scenic views: Several sites feature panoramic vistas across the grasslands. "Soon found a pretty great vista view from which the spectacular sunset was just a great bonus," notes a visitor at Lyndon B. Johnson National Grassland.
What you should know
Road conditions: Access roads vary significantly in quality. "Not to far off the beaten path but just far enough. I wouldn't bring anything towed or longer than a B van since there are some major ruts," warns a camper at Dead Pump Jack.
Water availability: No potable water exists at most dispersed sites. "There is also water available at those campsite but it's not potable so pack water in or bring a filtration system," advises a Forest Road 904 camper.
Bathroom facilities: Hunter Park sometimes has operational restrooms, but availability varies. "The bathrooms were closed but they supplied a porta potty and the nearest gas station is only about two minutes away," reports a visitor.
Tips for camping with families
Site spacing considerations: Some areas offer more privacy than others. "Campsites are right on the water and picnic tables and grill provided. Only a few spots but no privacy and right on top of each other," notes a Hunter Park camper about the waterfront area.
Safety precautions: Remote areas require self-sufficiency. "Remote, quiet, simple beauty. Easy access, cool area. Worth checking out for a low profile weekender or hike," suggests a visitor to Forest Road 904.
Weather planning: Prepare for variable conditions. "It did get rather windy but I was on top of the hill. Live and learn," shares a camper about their experience in the grasslands.
Tips from RVers
RV accessibility: Select sites carefully based on vehicle size. "We parked our 36' Class A on the side of FR 904, just inside the gate, unhooked our Cherokee and went to scope out the area," recommends an RV camper who explored before settling.
Connectivity options: Cellular service varies by location. "2 bars with Verizon! Wrote this from my hammock!" reports a Chisholm Trail Park visitor about unexpected connectivity.
Directional advice: Navigation can be challenging in the grasslands. "Download maps before getting here. Cell is not the best," advises a Forest Road 904 camper about preparation.
