Pet-friendly camping near North Charleston offers options for diverse experiences across several campgrounds. North Charleston sits within South Carolina's Lowcountry region where summer temperatures regularly reach 90°F with high humidity. The area experiences frequent afternoon thunderstorms during summer months, making camping strategies different from spring and fall when conditions are more moderate.
What to do
Dog-friendly trails and parks: At Edisto Beach State Park Campground, leashed pets can join you on most trails. "We had a magical time at Edisto. The Beach campground was just steps from the ocean. Opt for sites 1-12 or 50-75. Bathrooms were great. Shelling was incredible-especially if you walk towards the inlet around low tide," notes Katie F.
Fishing with your pets: Lake Aire RV Park provides fishing opportunities where dogs can accompany you. "Nice pond for fishing. About a 50-50 mix of long term campers and short term but no issues at all. Works stay here again," reports Joe.
Outdoor recreation: At James Island County Park Campground, you can enjoy numerous activities with your pet. "Wonderful park with plenty of amenities! We stayed here in October when the water park/pool was closed, but there was still plenty to do with bike rentals and the outdoor adventure area," shares Nick & Allyssa S.
What campers like
Spacious pet areas: Oak Plantation Campground offers room for pets to move. "Large park with paved and grass sites. I stayed in a paved full hookup site P2 and, even though there were a fair amount of guests, they spread everyone out so I had no immediate neighbors," Taylor D. explains.
Clean facilities for pets and owners: According to Bille W., James Island County Park maintains "lovely grounds and shop. Had an ice cream social that you could pay for. Facilities were clean."
Water features for hot days: "This place is awesome. Huge oaks covered in Spanish moss and well shaded. Older facilities but kept very clean. Staff is great and very helpful," notes Sean N. about Oak Plantation, providing comfortable environments during summer heat.
What you should know
Weather challenges: Summer thunderstorms and humidity affect pet comfort. "The tent sites were unlevel and muddy (since it rained before we arrived and all the water ran down hill to the tent sites)," Sara R. reports about Lake Aire RV Park.
Airport noise considerations: At Military Park Joint Base Charleston, "During the day there is the near by airport noise, but evenings are peaceful and relaxing. With 7 am revelee and evening taps, you know you're on a military base," explains Marci R.
Site selection strategy: Greg S. advises at James Island County Park: "The sites aren't huge but are clean and convenient to camp store and trails. Our site was a pull through with some nice palmettos but not a lot of privacy. Best sites looked to be the 40s and 50s."
Tips for camping with families
Pet-friendly playgrounds: "There is a nice walking/biking path around the campground and downtown Charleston and Isle of Palms beaches were both close by," Crystal C. shares about Mount Pleasant-Charleston KOA.
Water activities with pets: At James Island County Park, families can enjoy multiple recreation options. "Great place for families. Not very secluded. It is pretty much one big open green space with tent sites circling in a loop around the green space," reports Chrissy R.
Educational opportunities: Military Park Joint Base Charleston offers unique experiences. "This is a military-only campground on Charleston AFB. The campground is located near the golf course and outdoor recreation center, providing close access to golfing, soccer golf, disc golf, a climbing wall, and archery range," Erin S. explains.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: At Givhans Ferry State Park Campground, John W. reports, "30 foot trailer backed in no issues with plenty of room to pull truck in beside rig. They have some full hookup sites which is what I got. Most have water and electricity."
Connectivity issues: "This is a great park. The only issue is no cell service at least for us and we use att and Google fi," John W. continues about Givhans Ferry. Deborah L. confirms: "Nice campsite, full hookups, enjoyed the lightning bugs, great place to enjoy camping and getting away from electronics since no cell phone signal for T-Mobile and no wifi in campground."
RV maintenance: Oak Plantation Campground provides practical benefits. "Beware of ant piles," Taylor D. warns, suggesting RV owners should check their stabilizers and connections regularly to prevent ant problems.
