Best RV Parks & Resorts near North Charleston, SC

Near North Charleston, several RV parks offer full-hookup services for various rig sizes. Foster Creek RV Park provides paved sites for military personnel at reasonable rates of $35 per night, though recent reviews note some maintenance issues with several sites out of commission. "The pads are cement and level but close together," mentioned one camper, highlighting the park's practical layout despite its condition. Lake Aire RV Park in Hollywood features spacious sites accommodating big rigs with 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections on mostly level ground. Tiny Town RV Campground and Ladson RV Park round out the options with drive-in access suitable for larger motorhomes, though site dimensions vary significantly between locations.

For practical planning, RV travelers should note the limited availability of pull-through sites in the region, with most parks offering primarily back-in spots. While military-affiliated campgrounds like Foster Creek and Joint Base Charleston provide cost-effective alternatives, they restrict access to qualified personnel. Cell service varies across locations with Verizon reported as "sketchy" at Foster Creek but "working well" at Lake Aire. Many campgrounds in the area operate year-round, allowing for winter travel, though summer humidity makes spring and fall more comfortable seasons. Dump stations are available at larger facilities including Lake Aire and the James Island County Park Campground, which also offers convenient access to Charleston attractions approximately 25 minutes from downtown.

    Tiny Town RV Campground

    Nice Campground, Great Location

Family owned RV campground with full hook-ups and a food truck on the property! We were there on a Thursday evening and had delicious chicken street tacos. Easy to get in and out of the campground with our 28 foot travel trailer. Pull thru, level sites. Peaceful location surrounded by trees. You can hear the birds chirping and the neighbor's rooster while you sit outside enjoying the morning sun. All the sites have 20, 30 and 50 amp power, and a water hook up. The plumbing at each site is housed in whiskey barrels which we thought was a clever idea. Most sites had sewer as well. We had a picnic table and fire ring at our site also. Our Verizon phones worked fine with 4G, two bars. The campground is new, and small(16 sites) which we liked. The owners have plans to add activities and events in the near future but it currently has everything an RV camper would need. They were working on an axe throwing building and an activity area for kids when we were there. It's in a great location for exploring Summerville or Charleston, or for spending the day at one of the many nearby beaches. They offer a discount if staying a week which is wonderful since there is so much to do in the nearby towns.

    Mount Pleasant-Charleston KOA

    Awesome campground

This is a fantastic campground. The staff is friendly and helpful. The grounds are very well maintained. There are activities offered including a wagon ride through a plantation. There is a pool. They offer bike rental, along with kayak/paddle boat rentals. There’s a great dog park our pups loved. We paid a little extra for a deluxe site with full hookups and a lake view. The deluxe site also had a concrete pad, brick fire pit, and a swing. It was a shady spot with big oak trees. There is a nice camp store. The location of this campground is perfect near stores, restaurants, and not far from the beach.

    Eagle's RV Campground

    Ranger Review: Eagle’s RV Campground

We called to reserve a week long stay and were told they had sites available, which turned out was only one. The campground is definitely a “no frills” park and mostly used by long term/permanent residents. The host/owner had us pull right next to his own rig, it was a tight fit and we had zero privacy. He then proceeded to sit on his RV stairs and smoke and stare at us both when we were outside and when we were in our rig. We could smell the smoke which isn’t ok with us. We didn’t even bother to put the slides out. When we set up the electricity we had fire ants attack us. We decided quickly that we’d only stay the night and we’d leave first thing in the morning. Across the street is a nice state park and campground (Colleton State Park) but they unfortunately didn’t have any sites open big enough for our 30 ft class A. I’d recommend staying there over this campground if you want to be in this exact area. We luckily found another campground closer to Charleston to stay at.

    Mount Pleasant-Charleston KOA

    Beautiful, well-kept, campground.

Good location and quiet even though it sits right near Hwy 17 in a busy section of the city. Huge catch-and-release lake for fishing. The staff goes out of their way to accommodate your needs. Weak WiFi signal, but they will loan you a modem at no extra charge to connect to the Ethernet at the power post which is connected to a site-wide fiber optic network. It sits on a historic plantation that is only accessible by KOA guests with hay rides Monday through Thursday. Full hook-up with propane refill and dump station. Very near Wal-mart and Lowe's for shopping, among other stores. I recommend this KOA.

    Hunting Island State Park Campground

    Beachside campground

What a lovely spot! Walking miles on the beach on mild January days sometimes without seeing anyone else! Incredible shell collections. Campsites are big, lots of palm trees may limit some campsites for big rigs so speak to someone there when booking or use pull through sites. Sites do need more gravel, some are muddy. I didn’t use bathhouse. Short walk to beach. Great camp store, need to visit.

    Buck Hall Recreation Area

Intercoastal Camping: Watch Wildlife from the Campground

Reservations during the main season are key if you have any hope of getting a campsite in this awesome Francis Marion National Forest campground which sits just along the gorgeous intercoastal waterway, about 40 minutes northeast of Charleston, SC! We pulled in without reservations and nearly every site was booked out. The campground host was super helpful, though, finding us an empty spot (due to a cancellation) for a couple nights, then moved us to a non-reservable site for the remainder of our time.

The majority of the sites are designed for very large RVs, with a few very nice waterfront sites designated for tents. Each site is spacious, complete with a picnic table, firepit, 2 lantern poles, and electrical hookups, with a dump station at the back of the campground. The bathrooms are equipped with flush toilets, sinks, and a shower and kept relatively clean.

The campground itself is dripping with live oaks and speckled with Palmetto trees, so lots of shade is available, especially in the tent areas. The boat launch is walking distance from the campground and has a nice picnic area adjacent to it. We watched a pods of pelicans and dolphins come through the area, as well as many other sea birds.

We kayaked along the intercoastal waterway and out into marshy sea grass areas and had one of the most amazing wildlife encounters to date (and we’ve been all over the country). We saw a pod of dolphins in the distance, which appeared to be feeding. We stopped about 150 away and just enjoyed watching them dance and dive in the morning light. Then, two of the dolphins peeled away from the pack and headed straight toward us. As they approached our kayaks, the larger one gave an extra tail fin flap and dove under our boats, coming up just a bit on the other side. As naturalists, our hearts were pounding with excitement! We also hiked and mountain-biked along the gorgeous Palmetto Trail (which is a mountains-to-sea trail across South Carolina, and this campground serves as its coastal terminus).

Also, don’t miss the famous Sewee Restaurant for some downeast coastal Carolina fare, as well as the Center for Birds of Prey just across the highway from this restaurant. This wildlife conservation and rehabilitation center is doing some amazing things for birds and in the region and doing a great job of public education. If you head up the coast, be sure to stop in Boats & Hoagies in McClellanville for a bite to eat. Cute place, great food, awesome service!

The $20 per night fee is a great price for the amenities this campground offers, especially with full hook-ups and showers, and a boat launch. Check out our blog on The Dyrt's Online Magazine about our experience on the coast of South Carolina.

Campground at James Island County Park

    Hidden gem for visiting Charleston

When making reservations at James Island County Park we had modest expectations, but we were going to tour Charleston most of the time, so we decided anything close to the city would be good enough. The campground turned out to be very nice. We wished we had stayed there longer to enjoy not only Charleston, but the nature beauty of the park itself. The campground is located in a huge park with lots of amenities. The sites are spacious, covered with trees, full hookups with 50 amp service. There are a lot of shaded picturesque walking and bike trails in the park. The dog park was amazingly big, with a little doggy beach for water lovers. There is a big kids playground with a fun looking spray play fountain. It is located just 15 min drive from the campground to downtown Charleston. It is a great campground to stay when visiting Charleston. We have a video on our YouTube Channel- Summertime RV Rovers- about this park- Great Campgrounds in Coastal South Carolina: Charleston and Hilton Head Island. Please check for yourself. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Military Park Joint Base Charleston Outdoor Recreation Center

    Spectacular Military Family Camping

I am a retired military office and my son is stationed at Charleston AFB, so this campground is a perfect place for my wife and I to stay at while visiting our son. COVID-19 kept us from camping here the first week we were in town (we stayed at Lake Aire in Hollywood...check-out my review of that campground), but once the Health Protection Condition was reduced, reservations were easy to make through Outdoor Rec at 843-963-1732 or 1672.

Check-in was smooth and easy & site 12 was easy to back into and set-up was a breeze on this wide concrete pad. The sites are comfortably spaced and there was plenty of room for us to relax and enjoy ourselves.

Laundry and the bathrooms were closed because of COVID. Over the air TV provided plenty of essential TV and news access, and the WiFi was surprisingly good. There are a lot of pull-through sites that they reserve for bigger rigs.

Our site backs up to an open field near a playground. While we don't have little kids and a need to access the playground, the field was a nice place for the dog to roam.

Another review mentioned the giant voice that plays reveille at 0700, the anthem at 1630, and retreat at 1000. It may be annoying to some, but after a few days we got used to it and we could easily fall back to sleep in the morning. You should also know that the campground is near an active military and civilian flight-line, so expect aircraft noise.

The campground is close to a ton of activities that were mentioned below. One highlight that doesn't seem to get much press is Old Downtown North Charleston Park Circle area https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g54171-i105-k6958193-Take\_a\_detour\_to\_old\_downtown\_NORTH\_Charleston-Charleston\_South\_Carolina.html

The restaurants, bars, breweries & distillery are super nice (and dog friendly) and are a must see.

The next time we visit our son, we will definitely be back on base for a spectacular camping experience.

    Santee Coastal Reserve

    Beautiful Primitive Campground

Set up my pop up in #4. Large, beautiful private sites. Gorgeous trails within walking distance. Great opportunity to see wildlife. Lots of mosquitoes, but not miserably so. Short drive to the beach.

Guide to North Charleston

Most RV campgrounds near North Charleston are located within 20-30 minutes of the city, providing convenient access while avoiding urban congestion. The subtropical climate creates high humidity from June through September, with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F. Winter camping offers milder 50-70°F conditions, making fall through spring the preferred seasons for most campers.

What to do

Fishing access: Campgrounds near North Charleston offer multiple fishing opportunities in lakes and canals. Johnston Landing Campground & Cabins sits on Lake Moultrie with boat rentals available. "Once you successfully navigate all of the backroads past Lake Marion and directly on the shores of Lake Moultrie, you'll eventually find a small nook in the road where you'll discover Johnston Landing," notes one reviewer, who adds they offer "a paddle boat, kayaks and a row boat for rent."

Hiking trails: The Palmetto Trail provides excellent hiking options 5 miles from several campgrounds. "One of the best hikes in all of South Carolina— the Palmetto Trial is just about 5 miles away, but is definitely worth the hike as here you'll be able to witness first hand the sunken giant Cypress trees, amazing bird watching (Ospreys and Herons in particular)," according to a visitor at Johnston Landing.

Urban exploration: Downtown Charleston is accessible from most campgrounds within 25-50 minutes. Hill's Landing & RV Park visitors recommend "a drive to Charleston where you can visit some of the oldest and most well-preserved plantations in the entire South (along with the amazing culinary treasures you'll discover)."

What campers like

Quiet atmosphere: Despite proximity to highways, many campgrounds maintain peaceful settings. At Lake Aire RV Park, visitors appreciate the tranquility: "Nice, quiet campground with plenty of tall trees surrounding, we didn't have any trees in our site, but it was pretty wooded, so full sun was long. The grounds were clean and well maintained."

Convenience to attractions: Location between urban and natural attractions makes these campgrounds practical bases. "Good location for those wanting to visit the Charleston area without the hustle and bustle of the traffic. Close to Edisto beaches as well which is a good spot for the beaches," noted a Lake Aire RV Park camper.

Reasonable pricing: Several campgrounds offer good value for the amenities provided. Tiny Town RV Campground received praise for being "Super cute family owned rv campground. All the basics, no frills... Great stop for a 1 nighter on a trip."

What you should know

Cell service variations: Connectivity varies significantly between locations. At New Green Acres RV Park, campers report: "Wifi only works right at the office, which is a bummer." Other campgrounds show better coverage with one Lake Aire reviewer noting "Verizon worked well, good OTA TV."

Highway noise: Proximity to major roads affects some campgrounds. New Green Acres RV Park sits "right off 95, so it's not quiet. It is green instead of gravel, so that's nice." Another camper mentioned it's "very noisy even inside your camper."

Site conditions: Expect varying levels of site development and maintenance. "No rock or concrete pad to park on so be prepared to level your RV," warns one New Green Acres visitor, while another notes the campground has "really really long spaces."

Tips for camping with families

Recreational facilities: Some campgrounds offer dedicated family activities. Lake Aire RV Park features family-friendly amenities: "The pool was lively with guests having good fun and conversation," and "We were right next to the playground, but there weren't a lot of kids there."

Pet accommodations: Most campgrounds welcome pets with varying restrictions. At Black Pearl Farms, one camper mentioned, "Our dog loved having the space to roam around and the camping spots were in a wooded area behind the farm."

Kid-friendly sites: Request sites away from highway noise and near amenities. Tiny Town RV Campground is developing family areas: "They were working on an axe throwing building and an activity area for kids when we were there."

Tips from RVers

Site selection advice: When booking, specify your RV length and access needs. At Palmetto Shores RV Resort, campers advise: "be mindful of the site you pick! Our sites were right next to the highway, I will say though we did tune the noise out the longer we stayed (and drank)."

Leveling requirements: Many sites require additional leveling equipment. New Green Acres RV Park visitors note there's "No rock or concrete pad to park on so be prepared to level your RV."

Seasonal considerations: Summer humidity makes spring and fall preferable for RV camping near North Charleston. A Palmetto Shores camper shared, "Palmetto shores has a nice outdoor activity area, a nice lake beach and a really nice pool and lazy River."
