What to do
Boulder field exploration: Hickory Run State Park features a 16-acre boulder field with rocks dating back to the last ice age. "Boulders everywhere! Big ones, small ones, run (carefully) across them all! Beyond the Boulder field is a vast, scary, unknown," notes one visitor from Hickory Run State Park Campground.
Lakefront recreation: Multiple cabins provide direct water access for fishing and paddling. A visitor at Pickerel Point Campground shares, "We had site 100 and amazing views of the water from our camper. The trails were beautiful, recommend little falls trail. The bathrooms were clean with nice hot showers."
Historic town exploration: Jim Thorpe offers a Victorian downtown district with shops and restaurants 15-20 minutes from many cabin rentals. "We took a drive on 2 afternoons on a stone road through the woods to see the Boulder Field. It was a beautiful drive. We were on the lookout for bear, but only saw 3 deer," reports one camper about regional exploration options.
What campers like
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Bear sightings occur regularly near cabin accommodations in the region. "As soon as we got to our site one came right up as we were setting up our tent. Do not leave any food out be sure to lock up everything in car," warns a visitor at Tobyhanna State Park Campground.
Clean facilities: Consistent maintenance receives positive feedback across cabin properties. "Bathhouse, rec area, pools, playground, outdoor seating areas are all very nice and enjoyable. Would definitely come again!" notes a visitor at Mount Pocono Campground.
Lake views: Water access from cabin sites ranks highly among visitor preferences. "You can get sites right on the water that are nice size. If you go during the week, it's quite calm. You are in beautiful Jim Thorpe that has white water rafting in town, plus great restaurants and bars. I like that I can launch my paddle board from my sight and the water is so clean and clear," shares a camper about lake proximity.
What you should know
Site privacy varies significantly: Cabin spacing differs dramatically between properties. "The sites have large camping areas that can fit two cars onsite and include picnic tables, some even with water and electric hookups. The bathrooms are large and well kept. The lake is nearby and doesn't get crowded," reports a Tobyhanna visitor.
Bear safety requirements: All cabin rentals enforce food storage regulations. "We were warned at check in that there have been a lot of bears in the area but never really thought that we would see one. Camp sites were nice most had plenty of trees for privacy but were still kind of close," shares a camper.
Advance planning essential: Summer weekends and fall foliage season require reservations 3-6 months ahead. "We just went there again this past summer, and the lake and near by hikes are perfect for everyone in the family. We went to boulder fields and hawk falls as well!" notes one regular visitor about regional attractions.
Tips for camping with families
Multi-property activities: Many cabin rentals offer scheduled events for children. At Mountain Vista Campground, "Love it! Our favorite family campground! We've tried to camp at least one weekend a month from spring through fall and try different places, but we always come back to Mountain Vista! The staff is friendly and helpful and they have a ton of great activities from kids carnival, craft beer tastings, farmers market, bingo...the list goes on!"
Swimming options: Multiple pools and beach areas accommodate families with children. "Scenic state park with a lake. You can swim in the lake in the summer or do a 5-mile hike around the lake along well-marked walk paths. The beach area is part of the hiking trail so you can easily start a hike before or after you take a dip," notes a Tobyhanna camper.
Playground access: Recreation areas feature structures for various age groups. "There was a large open field in the loop we camped in with a swing set on it. This was nice for families with children," reports a Hickory Run visitor.
Tips from RVers
Site dimensions: Most cabin loops accommodate smaller RVs while maintaining separation. At Hemlock Campground & Cottages, "The spots have definitely been updated and made larger if you ask me. The whole place and the spots are always clean. The bathhouse is always clean and has hot water available at all times."
Utility connections: Power, water, and sewer availability varies significantly between cabin areas. "The campground had the standard water, 30 amp, and dump station. Unfortunately, it was a giant mud pit when we were there. The spots and road are not paved or have gravel. For the cost, it was pretty basic," shares an honest review about spring conditions.
Pull-through options: Limited pull-through sites exist among cabin locations. "Beautiful campground. Clean. Gravel sites. Fire ring and picnic table. All sites have ample room. Lots of pull through for bigger rigs. Wooded. Large dog park," reports a Mountain Vista visitor.
