Mount Vernon camping options extend beyond RV parks into the surrounding natural areas of Knox County. The Kokosing River watershed provides several water-based recreation opportunities, with most campgrounds situated at elevations between 900-1,200 feet. Winter camping options remain limited in this region, with temperatures typically dropping below freezing from December through February.
What to do
Canoeing and kayaking: Mohican Adventures Campground offers a seven-mile canoe trip with scenic river views. "We took advantage of their seven mile canoe trip which was rich with scenery and again, given the time we had choosen to go, we enjoyed much solitude on the river which took about 2.15 hours to traverse in our canoe," reports one visitor.
Biking on dedicated trails: River Trail Crossing provides direct access to a paved recreational trail. "Bike trail access right from the campground. Golf nearby, Amish shops, canoeing. Great area to visit, we will return," notes Bob M.
Fishing opportunities: Kokosing River Campground offers lake fishing for various species. "My boys were able to walk across the road to get to the pond that was well stocked with fish. It was catch and release but they were very excited to pull in some big ones," shares one camper about their experience at a nearby location.
What campers like
Indoor amenities during bad weather: Evergreen Park RV Resort maintains an indoor pool for year-round swimming. "The indoor pool is great for enjoying a swim even in January and the bathrooms and showers are spotless and very private," writes Bob R.
Clean facilities: Berlin RV Park receives consistent praise for its bathrooms. "SPOTLESS bathrooms and I mean SPOTLESS. Lots to do for kids: Sand Volleyball, basketball court, tetherball, corn hole area and playground," says Tara T.
Quiet camping environments: Sunset Springs RV Resort offers a peaceful atmosphere. "We arrived and were able to upgrade to site #1 due to a cancellation, overlooking the Ohio River. No one between us and the river, and we had a grand view," reports Robert T.
What you should know
Wi-Fi connectivity varies: Some campgrounds offer reliable connections while others require bringing your own internet source. "Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5G) seems good throughout the entire park. Best Wi-Fi I've ever had at a campground. They have Wi-Fi repeater towers everywhere you look," notes Gary G. about his stay at Sunbury/Columbus North KOA Holiday.
GPS directions can be problematic: Some campgrounds are difficult to locate with standard navigation. "Getting here proved to be tricky, as it seems all of the GPS apps and my Garmin routed us on a county road that is not fit for RVs of any type," warns Gregory L.
Site leveling requirements: Prepare to use leveling equipment at some locations. "There are a few sites are unlevel so you may need to use your levelers and maybe some blocks, we did," advises one RVer.
Tips for camping with families
Check activity schedules: Whispering Hills Jellystone RV Park offers themed weekends for children. "This campground was great. The jump mat was closed due to Covid, We hope to go back when it is open!" comments Emily.
Consider off-peak visits: Campsites offer more space and privacy during weekdays. "We camped here off season and had the place to ourselves. We had a pull through site which was gravel. The staff is friendly and the indoor pool and shower houses were amazing," shares Renee L.
Look for campgrounds with water features: Kids enjoy swimming and floating activities during summer months. "Nice, small, shaded, well maintained campground. Beautiful lake, nice and quiet. Lots of waterfowl," notes Shelly S.
Tips from RVers
Water and sewer connection locations: Check hookup placements before setting up. "The one and only issue is that water and electricity is located in the rear area of RV, while sewer connections are toward the front. I personally used 50' of water line and 30' of sewer line (which I carry with me anyways)," advises Earl B.
Seasonal availability fluctuations: RV camping near Mount Vernon, Ohio has different operating schedules by location. "We camped here the second weekend in December and had the park mostly to ourselves. There were only 3 other campers there," reports Andrea F.
Site spacing considerations: Some RV parks have close quarters during peak season. "Very clean and nice campground. I only negative for me was the campsites are very close to each other," notes Doug K.
