What to do
Hiking trails with water features: Mohican State Park Campground offers extensive trail systems with natural highlights. "Beautiful campsites on the water and near it... There is nice several mile through trail that goes from the dam area following the river to the primitive camping area and then to the camper/rv camping area," explains camper Renée C.
Water activities beyond swimming: Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground provides multiple water recreation options. "The lake is an all sport lake so there is fishing, tubing, jet skis and kayaking. The marina has boat rentals available," shares Michelle H., noting the variety available at this all-sports lake.
Mountain biking access: For cyclists, there are dedicated trails integrated with camping areas. "The hiking trails are great with a covered bridge, overlook and waterfalls. The sites are nice and large with lots of trees throughout the park... mountain bike trails are located within the campground as well as a pool," reports Andrea F. from Mohican State Park.
What campers like
Private tent sites: Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins offers secluded tent camping options away from RV areas. "We tent camped and had a private spot in the woods which we loved. The campgrounds covers all the basics," explains Lo H., highlighting the separation between camping styles.
Spacious riverfront camping: Mohican Wilderness provides generously sized sites along water. "We have camped here 3 times now and even though it's a large park the sites are huge so you still feel like you can kick back and relax. Quiet neighbors and friendly staff plus everything is mowed and well maintained," notes Andrea F.
Free primitive campsites: For backpackers seeking no-cost options, opportunities exist. "There are 10 free camp sites for backpackers in Mohican, each is about a mile hike in, no vehicles can reach these sites. There are 4 on the mountain bike trail and 6 on the horse trails, first come first serve, no reservations," advises John H.
What you should know
Weather considerations: Be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, especially in transitional seasons. "We arrived Friday late afternoon and set up in the rain. Didn't see much of the park on Friday, but Saturday we went exploring and saw the marina, beach, horse camp area, and walked some of the bridle trails," recounts Andrea F. from Pleasant Hill Lake Park.
Cell service limitations: Rustic Knolls Campground and surrounding areas often have limited connectivity. "It was great to be screen free for a couple days," notes Heidi L., highlighting the digital detox aspect of camping near Gambier.
Seasonal differences: Availability and amenities change throughout the camping season. "No cell service with Verizon at this park... Camping in the off season is our favorite time of year. This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hook up sites are turned off," advises Andrea F.
Tips for camping with families
Activity planning for kids: Lazy River at Granville offers family-focused recreation. "We spent a weekend here with two other families (9 kids total) and had a wonderful time! The kids loved the swimming pools and splash pads, the awesome play ground and lots of playing in the creek," shares Amanda D.
Bad weather contingencies: Consider campgrounds with indoor facilities for rain days. "There was a huge thunderstorm one of the nights, where we initially retreated to our vans; but then decided to drive up to the store and got ice cream which made the kids super excited about the rain. And they let all the tent dwellers use the game room to relax in and ride out the worst of the storm," explains Amanda D.
Pet-friendly animal encounters: Beyond dog friendly campgrounds near Gambier, some offer additional animal experiences. "Butler-Mohican KOA had some rough edges last time I visited (5 years ago)... My kids liked the playground and pet goats the best," mentions Melissa B., highlighting unique attractions for children.
Tips from RVers
Site selection for privacy: At Mt Gilead State Park Campground, site layout affects privacy. "Some sites do have electricity and water. I think all have electric. The park is nice for fishing and hiking and there are spots for the kids to play," advises Bret J., though noting "this campground is small with small sites."
Hookup considerations: Butler-Mohican KOA provides full-service options with staff assistance. "The staff are very nice, they escort you to your campsite and offer to guide you if needed," explains Tom M., highlighting the helpful orientation for new arrivals.
Off-season advantages: For RV campers seeking more space and quiet, timing matters. "We camped here off season and had the place to ourselves. We had a pull through site which was gravel. The staff is friendly and the indoor pool and shower houses were amazing. The sites seemed a little small so it might feel crowded during peak season," advises Renee L. about pet-friendly camping options near Gambier.
