    Middle Ridge/Vermilion Valley Rest Area

Hook up, dump station, quiet and immaculate rest stop ad well.

This is a test area on the Ohio Turnpike. Rv owners can self pay $20 to stay overnight. Quiet area away from the semis and common parking lot, but super close still to the plaza. The plaza offers 5 restaurants and vending machines, a gift shop, and clean restrooms. Sufficient area to exercise pets.

    Nice campground

We have stayed here twice and will definitely be back. Both times at the end of September. Nice campground, friendly staff, store is well stocked for anything you may have forgotten. The playground and jump mat for kids is awesome. They usually have some kind of activity for kids on weekends. We travel with 2 large Labrador retrievers and love being able to let them play off leash in the kamp k9 dog park. The sites are a little close together and the train is loud but other than that, it’s a wonderful place to stay. Very close to Cedar Point.

We stayed at this campground in the group camp area. The sites are tight but do provide water and 30 amp electric.

The campground offers a pond for fishing , swimming pool , bounce pad , inflatable lake fun, dog park and mini golf.

Since we were there as a group event we didn’t use any of the extras but it all looked nice and clean plus lots of fun.

Cell coverage was spotty but you could usually get some kind of signal.

The campground has a lot of seasonal sites as well as primitive tent camping and standard rv sites.

Nice Campground for a Group Event

This is our second time camping here and both times were for a group camping event. For this type of event it’s a great park. We had a whole sector the event with water and electric sites.

If we were going to camp here on our own I am not sure I would like it since it’s mostly set up for seasonal campers. So there are no hiking trail and there is also a lot of golf cart traffic.

They do offer a swimming pool , pond with inflatable slides , dog park , bound pad and miniature golf.

Guide to Castalia

Camping near Castalia, Ohio offers diverse options along Lake Erie's southern shore at elevations between 580-650 feet. The region's limestone bedrock creates unique features like natural springs and blue holes, while summer temperatures average 75-85°F with high humidity levels requiring proper ventilation for overnight stays. Most campgrounds in this area operate from April through October with peak reservation periods during summer weekends.

What to do

Blue Hole exploration: The area near Castalia features unique limestone formations and natural springs. At East Harbor State Park Campground, campers can incorporate nature exploration with beach activities. "The park is close enough to visit touristy places during the day, but far enough from the noise to feel relaxed. Great hiking, wonderful nature center on site with some planned activities to participate in," notes Sheri S.

Lake Erie fishing: The protected harbor waters provide excellent fishing opportunities. "I enjoy walking to the pond at night and flashlight frogs. It is a great place for birding, fishing, boating and close to marblehead lighthouse and the ferries to take you to Kelley's Island and Put In Bay," reports Jaclyn B. from East Harbor State Park.

Island hopping: Access nearby islands for day trips. South Bass Island State Park Campground serves as an excellent base. "The town is about 1.5 miles down the road and easy to get to via bicycle or island taxi. The slow ferry to the island (Miller) is the car ferry and it has free parking if you can leave your vehicle behind on the mainland," explains Stephen S.

What campers like

Waterfront sites: Some campgrounds offer direct lake access. "There are a few restaurants nearby. The sites vary in size, lots of shade trees where we camped. There are picnic tables and fire rings, some sites have FHUs, some standard electric, and of course, primitive," states Michi P. about East Harbor State Park.

Pool facilities: Many private campgrounds feature swimming options. At Cedarlane RV Resort, "They have an adults only pool as well for those looking for a break from all the kids. The sites are not huge and a little close together but very nice and well maintained," according to Ashley R.

Clean facilities: Several campgrounds maintain their amenities well. "The campground is clean and well organized. Lots of options available. We had no trouble booking a Pop Up site last minute," shares Tamara B. about Sandusky Bayshore KOA.

What you should know

Seasonal algae blooms: Lake Erie sometimes experiences water quality issues. "I only gave this campground 3 stars due to not being able to swim (beach was closed due to algae/unsafe water)," reports Sheri S. about East Harbor State Park.

Insect preparation: The region's humidity creates perfect conditions for bugs. "Good restrooms, pretty location. Somewhat remote, but there are a lot of trucks that go by through. Definitely bring bugspray!" advises Brittany M. from Crystal Rock Campground.

Ferry logistics: Island campgrounds require additional planning. "Access is via ferry. If you chose to leave your car on the mainland (free parking there) & pack in there are multiple sources for golf cart & bike rentals. For a quiet visit camp Monday thru Thursday; if you like crowds & parties reserve weekend time in advance," recommends Blythe J.

Tips for camping with families

Water activities: Many campgrounds offer kid-friendly water features. At Cedarlane RV Resort, "They have a great splash pad and wading pool for kids. A gem mine. Horseshoes, basketball court and lots of kids activities," explains Jeffrey C.

Educational opportunities: Look for campgrounds with nature programs. "I enjoy this campground because there are lots of great spots to choose from. The camp store has all the necessities you may have forgotten. I enjoy walking to the pond at night and flashlight frogs," reports Jaclyn B.

Strategic timing: Plan visits to avoid peak crowds at Kelleys Island State Park Campground. "A busy family oriented campground with lots to do. Beaches, trails, biking, kayaking, and exploring the glacial grooves kept our family busy over our three night tent stay," notes Sarah H.

Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Many sites need adjustment. "Got stuck due to rough waters so we got a free night on the island. Always plan ahead and be flexible when going to an island," advises Daniel U. about Kelleys Island State Park.

Hookup options: Confirm what utilities are available. At Lighthouse Point at Cedar Point, "Perfect for our visit to Cedar Point. Very nice concrete parking pads and hook ups. Clean and modern bathroom/bathhouse with multiple locations for the campground only," reports Elise A.

Site spacing: Private campgrounds often pack sites closely. "Milan Travel Park has sites a decent size in length, but pretty close together. Most look reliably level. Gravel and grass. Tent and rv sites. Not many trees for shade in rv area, but enough to provide some shade," observes Tracey S.
