Lake Erie campgrounds near Castalia, Ohio provide diverse glamping and traditional camping experiences within 20 miles of Cedar Point amusement park. The area sits at approximately 580-600 feet elevation with a humid continental climate that brings warm summers and cold winters. Most campsites operate seasonally from April through October due to harsh winter conditions, with mid-summer water temperatures reaching the mid-70s.
What to do
Kayaking at South Bass Island: Launch from the rocky beach area where swimming is also permitted. "The park has a rocky beach (shoes NECESSARY) which is actually a nice swimming area if you aren't looking for sand under your feet or blanket. That beach is a great area though to launch a kayak or sailboard to use in the cove," notes a visitor to South Bass Island State Park Campground.
Off-season birding: Winter and early spring bring migratory birds to the area's wetlands and shorelines. "The most well kept, private, beautiful campground I've been to so far... We were truly amazed at the park, the HUGE beach on lake Erie, the inland Beach, the 2-mile boardwalk through the wetlands, the Big Hill, and the nature center," says a camper at Maumee Bay State Park.
Biking the islands: Most visitors explore Kelleys Island and South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay) by bicycle or rented golf cart. "The island is beautiful and we hope that you can enjoy it! ...Check local deals on Groupon or Lake Erie Shores and Islands websites to save a bit on your trip," suggests a visitor to Kelleys Island State Park Campground.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many campgrounds use strategic landscaping to create individual spaces. "One of my favorite things about this campground is that your spots are close together which is great for safety, however with the bushes and brush, it feels super private. My grandparents were in the site next to me in their camper and I had to walk a ways to see their spot," explains a camper from Maumee Bay State Park Campground.
Direct lake access: Waterfront sites offer premium views but fill quickly. "Site D10 was massive, had a creek running alongside of it. And was hidden behind lots of trees. Will be back," says a visitor to East Harbor State Park Campground.
Glamping close to Castalia, Ohio: Several locations offer upscale glamping accommodations within driving distance of Castalia. "This campground has been wonderfully updated! The owners have added in an additional playground, dog park, newly paved roadways, newly redone building, a new pavilion, fire pit, and boat parking! We love camping here every chance we get! It is convenient to the turnpike and Cedar Point is just a few miles away!" says a reviewer of Milan Travel Park.
What you should know
Island ferry logistics: Allow extra time for ferry transportation, especially on summer weekends. "NO WIFI!! My phone thought we were in Canada which was only a problem because we couldn't connect with our friends in town to make plans," reports a camper at South Bass Island State Park. Another adds, "You have to take a ferry to the camp ground. Kelley's Island Ferry in Marblehead. It is a few miles to camp ground so if you are renting and don't bring a vehicle you will want to rent a golf cart."
Highway noise affects some sites: Proximity to major roads impacts quietness at certain campgrounds. "The campground pretty much sits on top of the highway which is heavily traveled as an alternate to the Turnpike, so a quiet night will not be had," warns a visitor to Crystal Rock Campground.
Seasonal algae blooms: Lake Erie sometimes experiences harmful algae that can close beaches. "I only gave this campground 3 stars due to not being able to swim (beach was closed due to algae/unsafe water)," notes one camper, while another mentions, "There are lots of bugs that come off the lake. Also make sure you bring jackets and blankets, even in the summer it can get pretty cool in the evening."
Tips for camping with families
Playground amenities: Several campgrounds offer child-friendly recreation areas. "Very clean and friendly staff with plenty of things to do in the area. Bathrooms and showers were clean which is always a plus. Wifi reception was also good. Definitely a place to stay if you're fishing Lake Erie or visiting Cedar point," says a visitor to Crystal Rock Campground.
Safer tent sites: If tent camping with children, consider non-cliff sites. "This campground has beautiful, cliff-side sites right on the water, which is probably not good for small children. The interior sites are just ok, but most are level with a bit of shade," advises a visitor to South Bass Island State Park.
Weekend atmosphere considerations: Island campgrounds can get noisy on summer weekends. "What you need to be aware of here is the party atmosphere. Many young people camp here so that they can party in Put-In-Bay all day and night. Last time I was here, a group of 20-somethings came home at 2am and blared their music til 5. They quieted down a bit but started right back up at 7am," cautions a camper at South Bass Island about weekend crowds.
Tips from RVers
Early booking essential: Premium RV sites with full hookups book months in advance, especially at Cedar Point. "Perfect for our visit to Cedar Point. We got there late at 9:00 pm and didn't have to check out until 8:00 pm the next day so our RV stayed plugged in to all day. The campground stay also included early entry passes into the park at 8:45 AM before the opening for regular entry at 10:00 am," notes a visitor to Lighthouse Point at Cedar Point.
Site leveling considerations: Some campgrounds require additional equipment for proper leveling. "The flattest RV sites with fair to good locations are Sites 57 and 44 (although even these will require a little leveling). The campground includes very clean flush toilets and even cleaner showers (no cost for the showers)," advises an RVer who stayed at South Bass Island.
Limited dump stations: Plan ahead for departure procedures. "They have dumping stations that are easy to use and also running water at the station. The island is beautiful and we hope that you can enjoy it!" mentions a camper about Kelleys Island State Park facilities.
