    Indian Creek Campground

    Creekside Camping

Indian Creek offers the most relaxing creekside camping in North Carolina.

Every campsite is lush with greenery, private and well maintained after each occupancy. The bathhouse is the cleanest I have found and the campsite store carries all of your forgotten necessities, and more!

My husband and I love coming back to this campground, because how of well we and our kids sleep! The sound of the creek at night melts all of your worries away and takes you off to peaceful slumber.

This campground is always in rotation for a visit.

Four Paws Kingdom Campground & Dog Retreat

    Adult and Dog campground wonder

From the moment we arrived at the campground the manager "Larry"  ( a workamper) signed us in, show us our site on Wagging Tail Dr.  We arrived on their opening weekend the Owners provided BBQ meal and live music "Jose Wales" band.   It was a wonderful time.  As for the "Dog Retreat part - 18 acres of wonder open areas fenced in to keep you furry friends from running away, there is agility park, puppy park, the main dog park, a private park (single or you can invite), a Lure run, a Ball Park, and a Pond for those watery dogs.

Price for Fire wood - a little expensive and 10 lbs of Ice was reasonable.  There are fully fenced sites, a couple of sites with a fenced area.  The larges rig I saw in there was a Solitude at  38 ft.

Over all, if you want the peace and quiet in the North Carolina foot hills with your furry friend and have a good time.  This is the place to be.

One other note:  It is the only park in NC that is a dedicated dog campground.

    Davidson River Campground

    Pisgah Gem

Great campground with shady sites that are not too close together. The onsite swimming hole and tubing was a major plus with our 6 yr old son. Great location in the Pisgah Forest and also close to Dupont Forest. We will definitely return.

    Curtis Creek Campground

    Great for Exploring

The Pisgah forest is ridiculously beautiful. It’s especially colorful in the fall. Highly recommended to people who like to hike and waterfalls. There’s also a wildlife management station nearby that’s great for kids.

    Asheville West KOA

Far enough away to feel like camping and still close to the city

The Asheville KOA is very pet and RV friendly. There are a number of walking trails of easy to moderate difficulty that run throughout the property. The dog park is a great place to let the pups off of the leashes for a bit. Staff pickup trash daily between 10-11AM at your site, but dumpsters are easily accessible.

We camped here in our 22' travel trailer. The back in sites are mostly level with a mix of dirt and gravel. If you're looking for a sunny spot, request one of the even-numbered back-ins. If you would prefer to be mostly in the shade, go for an odd-numbered spot. 20/30/50 amp electric, cable, water and sewer were easily accessible at each site. Camp sites are not very large, so be mindful of volume and lights with respect to your neighbors.

    Davidson River Campground

    Family camping at its best

This campground is the perfect base camp for all of your favorite mountain sports activities with plenty of tent camping and RV sites. Located in the heart of Pisgah Forest within the town limits of Brevard NC adjacent to the Davidson River. Mountain bike Mecca, excellent trout fishing, tubing down the Davidson along the campground, more hiking than you can do during your vacation from easy to extreme, less than 10 minutes from downtown Brevard with excellent food choices and several craft Breweries. If you can't find something to do you are not trying. During the summer months it fills up early on the weekend so get there early.

    Pisgah Forest Mountain Meadows

Great Spot Close to Brevard and Pisgah National Forest!!!

Lovely large campsite on a stream in Pisgah Forest. The campsite makes a clean, safe, relaxing and convenient base camp for all your adventures in Pisgah National Forest, DuPont State Forest, and Brevard. Site 1 has a 30 amp hookup and can accommodate RVs up to 25 ft. There’s a very clean privy, an ample supply of dry firewood sold for a flat rate of $10/stay. No water hookups, but there is a walk-up only hydrant with potable water available about 200 yds from campsites.

    Mills River Dispersed

    TEMPORARILY CLOSED APRIL 2025

FYI - this is not showing as closed on NFS site - right after the North Mills River Campground Yellow Gap road is gated and closed due to damage from Helene in Sep 2024.  A call to Pisgah Forest Service office confirmed it may be quite a bit before it is opened up as there are other priority areas they are currently working on.

    Greenheart Forest

    Straight up amazing and peaceful

The minute you roll onto Davids property, you know you are in a special place. David greets you upon arrival and provides you with a map of the property which includes meditation gardens that have been kept with love. Pisgah Forest is on one side of the road and campsites on the other which makes it very quiet with the exception of bird song. We stayed at site 4 which we were allowed to drive our truck with Roofnest up to. We were the only ones camping but the place is built for community while still maintaining privacy of camp sites. Water is available, camp rings with grates at each site and a port-a-jon. It does state that showers are available on the website but we didn’t request the need for this. The resident dog Sunny and our golden retriever had the best time together and our daughter enjoyed watching them play. Very family friendly, warm and inviting. The energy there is amazing!

Guide to Pisgah Forest

Davidson River Campground in Pisgah National Forest sits at approximately 2,150 feet elevation, creating cooler camping conditions than nearby Asheville. The area experiences frequent afternoon rain showers during summer months with average July temperatures ranging between 65-85°F. National Forest campgrounds maintain strict generator hours, typically limited to 8am-8pm, with complete quiet hours from 10pm-6am.

What to do

Fly fishing opportunities: Several campgrounds offer direct access to prime trout waters. North Mills River Campground features excellent fishing spots. "Just a stone's throw from the bustle of Asheville, yet secluded enough to forget it all, this little gem is conveniently located at the entrance to Pisgah National Forest... My pooch also enjoyed the area, and I was grateful for the free bags to pick up after her."

Waterfall exploration: Table Rock State Park provides access to multiple waterfalls within a 45-minute drive. "In the park, you can swim, hike, camp, fish and kayak. You will see some excellent views of the mountain ranges... There are many waterfalls in the area and many places to hike."

Mountain biking trails: Access numerous biking paths directly from Davidson River Campground. "We enjoyed the accessibility of hiking, biking and fishing right from the campground. ART LOEB trailhead is right outside the campground entrance and is excellent for hiking and mountain biking."

What campers like

Riverside sites: Many campers appreciate water-adjacent camping spots. "Stayed at campsite #10. It sits about 50 yards up the hill from the main river running through the valley... The river is a great soundtrack for a nights sleep."

Pet-friendly atmosphere: Lazy J Campground welcomes dogs and features unique animal attractions. "Really nice people, but a bit pricy if you don't care about the showers etc... fun animals like ponys and chickens in the area."

Winter camping options: Several dog-friendly campgrounds near Pisgah Forest remain open year-round. "We were the only campers there. It was very quiet. The stream ran right by the campsite so listening to the stream as we went to bed was wonderful. Bathroom was clean. Site was clean. Only one side of campground is open in winter."

What you should know

Limited cell service: Many campgrounds have spotty connectivity. "Even though it's only 10 minutes or so away from the edge of Asheville, it has the feel of being much further away - including no Verizon service."

Bear activity: Wildlife precautions are essential at Mount Pisgah Campground. "Spacious sites arranged for privacy. Over 5000 ft in elevation which means cool nights in Summer... Keep all food secure in bear box provided at each site. Rangers patrol often so have always felt secure."

Reservation requirements: Popular sites fill quickly, especially in summer months. "This area has become over run with tourists and the 'free' campsites have mostly been comandeered by squatters who rotate from site to site every 14 days... This place is packed most all of the summer now so you don't want to show up without a spot."

Tips for camping with families

Lakefront options: Lake Powhatan Campground offers water activities suitable for children. "Lake Powhatan campground is well maintained and peaceful. Bathrooms are clean and there's hot showers. Firewood and ice are available for purchase by the gate. There's a good amount of trails to hike at and the lake is good for fishing."

Swimming spots: Natural water features provide cooling options during hot summer days. "Slide Rock is a natural water slide that is fun for the whole family. Yes… it's COLD and honestly worth every moment of chilly suffering."

Playground access: Several campgrounds offer dedicated play areas. "They have a playground which is cool and the staff is very friendly. Unfortunately, they do not allow hammocks any more since people were cutting off tree branches to make hanging hammocks easier."

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: Rutledge Lake RV Resort offers waterfront options but with some limitations. "There are a few sites along the creek on the back left that are a little wooded and have some separation, we were in site 86 which was one of them, but most sites are very close together, many probably less than 15' apart."

Weather preparedness: Mountain elevations create unpredictable conditions. "We used this as an overnight stay on our way from SC to MI. We initially planned to disperse camp nearby, but due to the cold weather, we decided to get a site with electric instead."

Leveling requirements: Many campsites in the Pisgah area require additional equipment. "There are decent 3 bar verizon coverage. Sites are all gravel. We have hammocked camped here, and this last trip, I camped in my Motorcycle trailer... You will likely need to level anything you bring."
