    Indian Creek Campground

    Creekside Camping

Indian Creek offers the most relaxing creekside camping in North Carolina.

Every campsite is lush with greenery, private and well maintained after each occupancy. The bathhouse is the cleanest I have found and the campsite store carries all of your forgotten necessities, and more!

My husband and I love coming back to this campground, because how of well we and our kids sleep! The sound of the creek at night melts all of your worries away and takes you off to peaceful slumber.

This campground is always in rotation for a visit.

    Davidson River Campground

    Rain, Rivers and Waterfalls!!

Last September was a wet one...with record amounts of rainfall and flooding. It was in such a time that we decided it was good to go camping.

It always seems to rain when I camp anyways...so why not go when its raining to avoid crowds and enjoy solitude.

Once again, interested in checking out as many waterfalls and cascades we could locate, the water flow will be so much more dramatic amidst heavy rainfall.

Davidson River Campground is an earshot from Brevard, NC and tucked into the outskirts of Pisgah National Forest. Check out their website for all things interesting: http://cfaia.org/davidson-river-campgrounds-in-north-carolina/

Basically, we had the run of the campgrounds other than a few RV's. So we chose a tent spot where the river curled around us on three sides. Probably not the wisest choice during heavy rains and flooding...but threw all caution to the wind.

You will have a well-drained gravel tent pad...which makes staking your tent out a bit of a pain, but you won't endure puddling. The entire campground is meticulously maintained when we were there...and the staff at check-in were quite personable and fun.

As facilities go...they are nice...and you can enjoy a nice hot shower...a seeming rarity these days.

Davidson River was flowing but appeared unaffected by the heavy rainfall, as it was crystal clear...and gave no indication of rising over its banks. Which was much appreciated being perched 30 feet away. The rhythmic sounds of the river offered sound sleep all night.

Looking Glass falls are just down the round into the forest and always a treat.

Into Brevard, there are some cool shops worth visiting...and plenty of eateries. One such shop was Backcountry Outdoors, which offers all things glorious for the camper/backpacker/hiker/bicyclist.

It is a rare occasion to have such a nice, quiet campground situated so closely to wilderness and civilization...offering the best of both worlds when its a deluge outside.

You can't go wrong with this pick!

    Palmetto Cove RV Park

    Amazing park

This is old school. Full hookups, but an old Airstream park it’s all grass like a field. It’s located in a valley surrounded by mountains and the views are very nice. Behind the campground is the Saluda River where you can swim and fish. No bathhouses, it has a laundry and a very large pavilion. It’s about 20 Minutes from Brevard over the mountain, and about 10 minutes from Ceasars Head state park. A quiet peaceful location.

    Davidson River Campground

    Popular spot

This place has everything...wireless, showers, bike path, tennis courts and horse stables down the road. Lots to do here on sliding rock, chasing waterfalls, hiking, and fishing. Be prepared for many cyclists on the road. There is a free primitive campground area on the road the horse stables are on if you are into that. This campground does fill up quickly, it's a beautiful area and only a few miles from Brevard.

Lake Powhatan — National Forests In North Carolina

    Amazing place! Bike Trails forever!

Wow, this is an amazing place to be. Right next to Powhatan Lake, but most of all, a mountain biker's dream! Hikers too, but really, all trails allow for bikers-single track riding. The trail system goes into an experimental forest area (whatever that means). Ensure to print out a map before hand, I can't begin to start to explain how many small loops, links, connector trails there are.

Campground itself is just 10-15 mins away from downtown Asheville, filled with great breweries and eats. It's also about 45 mins North from Brevard and Dupont State Park, another mountain biking hit. DuPont was also unbelievably amazing for waterfalls and swimming holes. We actually hiked to 3 waterfalls in DuPont, swimming and sliding down flat rocks at Hooker Falls and High Falls. Amazing experience that everyone should have on their bucket list.

Four Paws Kingdom Campground & Dog Retreat

    Adult and Dog campground wonder

From the moment we arrived at the campground the manager "Larry"  ( a workamper) signed us in, show us our site on Wagging Tail Dr.  We arrived on their opening weekend the Owners provided BBQ meal and live music "Jose Wales" band.   It was a wonderful time.  As for the "Dog Retreat part - 18 acres of wonder open areas fenced in to keep you furry friends from running away, there is agility park, puppy park, the main dog park, a private park (single or you can invite), a Lure run, a Ball Park, and a Pond for those watery dogs.

Price for Fire wood - a little expensive and 10 lbs of Ice was reasonable.  There are fully fenced sites, a couple of sites with a fenced area.  The larges rig I saw in there was a Solitude at  38 ft.

Over all, if you want the peace and quiet in the North Carolina foot hills with your furry friend and have a good time.  This is the place to be.

One other note:  It is the only park in NC that is a dedicated dog campground.

    Asheville West KOA

Far enough away to feel like camping and still close to the city

The Asheville KOA is very pet and RV friendly. There are a number of walking trails of easy to moderate difficulty that run throughout the property. The dog park is a great place to let the pups off of the leashes for a bit. Staff pickup trash daily between 10-11AM at your site, but dumpsters are easily accessible.

We camped here in our 22' travel trailer. The back in sites are mostly level with a mix of dirt and gravel. If you're looking for a sunny spot, request one of the even-numbered back-ins. If you would prefer to be mostly in the shade, go for an odd-numbered spot. 20/30/50 amp electric, cable, water and sewer were easily accessible at each site. Camp sites are not very large, so be mindful of volume and lights with respect to your neighbors.

    Davidson River Campground

Great Campground! Clean Restrooms & Showers

We had a quick nights stay in Davidson River Campground after picking up our new SylvanSport GO tent trailer in nearby Brevard, North Carolina. Our campsite was pretty big, clean, level, and close to the restrooms. This camp was really nice and we would definitely come back again. We didn’t have much time to explore as we were busy setting up our new toy. Had one set of noisy campers (though their guitar, fiddle and singing were actually not too bad) they did party past quite hours but someone from the park came and asked them to quiet things down...which they did. Had several nice visits with other campers. Don’t pass this campground by!

Four Paws Kingdom Campground & Dog Retreat

    Awesome for dogs and people!

We camped here back in August and had a blast! We brought our two dogs and they also had a great time. This site is very dog friendly (obviously), with many sites having their own fenced in yards. We opted for a site without a fence, which we regretted once we got there. The gravel at our site was painful for our dog’s feet and they had a hard time walking on it. The dog parks made up for this! There are multiple large dog parks located at the campground. The restrooms were awesome, but are single person use only. We felt like we were the only ones using them (that’s how well maintained they were). Campsites are close together but we didn’t mind. The staff was great, they helped us find our site and even helped us back our camper in. There was power and water hookup at each site. There is tons of stuff to do around the area too. Chimney Rock and Lake Lure are right around the corner and SO FUN.

Guide to Brevard

Davidson River provides pet-friendly sites throughout multiple camping loops near Brevard, North Carolina, with the surrounding mountains in Pisgah National Forest forming a natural basin. The area sits at an elevation around 2,200 feet, creating cooler summer nights even when daytime temperatures climb into the 80s. Rivers and streams run through many campgrounds, offering natural cooling and ambient noise that helps mask neighboring campsites.

What to do

Fishing spots with stocking schedules: North Mills River Campground offers excellent trout fishing access. "Hike in about half a mile up to 3 miles. Find a spot to crash!" notes camper Cali C., while another reviewer mentions the area is "stocked and also has native rainbow trout exceeding 20 inches."

Winter camping opportunities: Several campgrounds remain open year-round with reduced services. At North Mills River, "We were the only campers there. It was very quiet. The stream ran right by the campsite so listening to the stream as we went to bed was wonderful," reports Julie T.

Swimming holes and beach access: Lake Powhatan offers swimming areas with mountain views. Camper Dylan B. noted the park has "beautiful and maintained" campsites that are "semi private" with "tons of hiking trails" and a "nice beach."

What campers like

Morning wildlife viewing: Early risers often spot white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and occasionally bears near campsites. At Mount Pisgah Campground, campers appreciate the elevation advantage. "Over 5000 ft in elevation which means cool nights in Summer. Trees all around for privacy," shares Ulrich M.

River sounds for sleeping: Many sites near Davidson River have ambient water noise that helps create a peaceful atmosphere. According to one visitor at Jones Gap State Park, "The river is a great soundtrack for a nights sleep."

Fall color timing: Late October offers peak leaf viewing at most campgrounds. Campers report remarkable color displays, though weather can be unpredictable. "We did hit peak color, I didn't think that the cold front would be as intense. Temperature dropped below freezing," notes Ted H. from his Mount Pisgah stay.

What you should know

Bear safety requirements: All camping areas require proper food storage. Most campsites include bear-proof containers. "Keep all food secure in bear box provided at each site. Rangers patrol often so have always felt secure," explains a Mount Pisgah camper.

Limited cell service: Connectivity varies greatly by campground and carrier. One camper at Black Forest Family Camping Resort notes, "Sites are wooded and spaced far enough apart that you barely see or hear neighbors. There is no Cell Reception at the campground but they have WiFi."

Reservation timing: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially during summer and fall weekends. "This place is packed most all of the summer now so you don't want to show up without a spot," warns Anna R. about Davidson River.

Tips for camping with families

Best swimming areas for kids: Several campgrounds offer designated swimming areas with gradual entry points. "The lake is so clear. Site is so clean," reports a visitor to Devils Fork State Park, adding "So much for family's to do here."

Playgrounds and recreation: Some campgrounds include built-in entertainment for children. "They have a playground which is cool and the staff is very friendly," notes a camper about Lazy J Campground.

First-time backpacking options: For families wanting to try backpacking with minimal risk, Jones Gap offers accessible sites. "This is a great campsite for 1st time backpackers. The site is approximately 1 mile from the state park office," shares Stacy B.

Tips from RVers

Electric hookup limitations: Many campgrounds offer limited electrical sites that book quickly. "We have tent camped and now taken our RV. Tent sites right on the river," notes Tracy S. about Lazy J Campground.

Leveling challenges: Several campgrounds require leveling blocks due to terrain. "Sites are all gravel. We have hammocked camped here, and this last trip, I camped in my Motorcycle trailer. You will likely need to level anything you bring," advises Adam V.

Dump station access: Some pet-friendly camping areas near Brevard offer dump stations even if full hookups aren't available. "The dump site is very tight, and lacking. That was the only thing on this campground I feel needed some work," notes a reviewer about Davidson River Campground.
