Lake Chatuge spans 7,200 acres along the North Carolina-Georgia border, creating numerous pet-friendly camping opportunities near Hayesville. The lake maintains surprisingly warm water temperatures into late spring, making it an ideal destination for campers with dogs. Campgrounds in this area sit at elevations between 1,800-2,000 feet, offering moderate temperatures even during summer months.
What to do
Hiking with dogs: At Jackrabbit Mountain, trails range from easy lakeside paths to more challenging mountain routes. "There is a 1.5 mile connector dirt trail to the Jackrabbit mountain trail system, so no need to ride on the road. It goes parallel to the road and starts at the Y right before entering the campground," notes Katrin S.
Mountain biking: The 15-mile trail network at Jackrabbit Mountain accommodates all skill levels. "The 15 miles of mountain bike trails are absolutely amazing for all skill levels," shares Katrin S. Many trails offer lake views while providing exercise for both you and your dog.
Horseback riding: Trackrock Campground offers on-site equestrian activities. "I also got to enjoy a lovely horseback ride on Chubby Checker with Sonya....that was the highlight of the trip for me," says Ellen S. The campground features dedicated areas for equestrian camping and trail access.
Fishing: Multiple access points around Lake Chatuge provide excellent fishing opportunities. "Most sites on the lake side have access to see it. We were able to see it via a short trail," explains Kelly at Gibson Cove Campground. Lakefront sites often allow fishing directly from your campsite.
What campers like
Lake access: Campers consistently rate the crystal-clear water of Lake Chatuge as a top attraction. "The water is almost crystal clear, and most sites are on the lake. It's also only about 20 minutes from Bell mountain, which is a must see for the views of Lake Chatuge and the surrounding mountains," says Mike P. from Jackrabbit Mountain.
Waterfront sites: Many campsites offer direct water access for swimming with dogs. "This particular site has direct water access for swimming and fishing. This site has no shade between noon and 4," reports Katrin S. about site 13A at Jackrabbit Mountain.
Clean facilities: Standing Indian Campground receives high marks for well-maintained bathhouses. "Bathrooms and showers are clean. Wonderful place to tent camp, van camp, or tow a SMALL trailer to (a pop-up would be perfect)," notes John K. The campground's attention to cleanliness extends to camping pads and common areas.
Mountain views: The surrounding mountains create scenic backdrops at most campgrounds. "Our spot was 13A which is right on the water. Gravel tent site is very large. Picnic table and fire ring. Parking is right above the steps that go down to the tent pad," explains Katrin S. about Jackrabbit Mountain.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Most lakeside campgrounds fill quickly during summer months. "Reservations are almost a must to stay here if you plan on staying a week or longer. All campsites are within walking distance to Lake Chatuge," advises Jeff D. about Georgia Mountain Fair Campground.
Alcohol regulations: Some county parks prohibit alcohol. "Alcohol is not allowed in the park," notes Phillip R. about Gibson Cove Campground. This rule applies to several public campgrounds in the area.
Seasonal operations: Many campgrounds operate on limited schedules. "I would recommend this campground to anyone. Its not far from Hiawassee GA and is right on Lake Chatuge... The only complaint we have is that is only open from May to September. I would love it if this campground was open year round," mentions John W. about Jackrabbit Mountain.
Shower facilities: Bathroom amenities vary significantly between campgrounds. "The bathhouse is older but exceptionally clean and well maintained," reports Steve T. about Gibson Cove, while noting it has limited shower facilities.
Tips for camping with families
Creek play areas: Stream access provides natural entertainment for children. "A beautiful trout stream runs through the park, close to all the campsites," describes John K. at Standing Indian Campground, making it perfect for dogs and kids to cool off.
Swimming access: Designated swimming areas exist at several campgrounds. "There is also a great beach and nearby trails. Bathrooms are decent," says Brooke M. about Jackrabbit Mountain. Swimming areas often include shallow entry points suitable for dogs and children.
Playground facilities: Vogel State Park offers multiple play areas. "Two separate children's playgrounds exist, not too far from one another. One near a small kids ball field...the other near a very nice volleyball court, permanent corn hole pit and state of the art outdoor exercise machine area," explains Dave V., creating recreation options for various age groups.
Quiet hours enforcement: Most campgrounds maintain strict quiet hours beginning at 10pm. "Posted 10pm works," notes Frank S. at Enota Mountain Retreat, allowing families to establish consistent bedtimes.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Many campgrounds feature terraced or sloped sites due to mountain terrain. "Sites are VERY close together, all gravel with no grass between rigs. Full hook-ups. Cable and not very good WiFi," shares 5Dudes about Bald Mountain Camping Resort. Bring extra leveling blocks for uneven sites.
Road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds present challenges. "The road is a steep grade up to the campground," warns Katrin M. about Black Rock Mountain State Park. Consider vehicle capabilities when selecting campgrounds, especially with larger RVs.
Dump station access: Not all campgrounds offer full hookups. "No sewer, but has a dump station," notes Phillip R. about Gibson Cove Campground. Plan accordingly or choose campgrounds with sewer hookups if staying multiple days.
Electric availability: Amperage varies between campgrounds. "We were able to set up camp and not feel like we're hemmed in by motorhomes," explains Chris H. about Black Rock Mountain State Park. Verify electrical capacity matches your RV requirements before booking.
