Best Campgrounds near Shoreham, NY

Shoreham, New York provides access to several established campgrounds along the Long Island coastline with a mix of tent, RV, and cabin accommodations. Wildwood State Park Campground in Wading River features multiple accommodation types including tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin options, operating seasonally from April through October. Other notable camping areas include Southaven County Park in Brookhaven and Indian Island County Park in Riverhead, both offering year-round camping opportunities. Most developed campgrounds in the region provide basic amenities like drinking water, picnic tables, showers, and toilets, with several offering electric hookups for RVs.

Many campgrounds in this coastal region require advance reservations, particularly during summer months when beach access is highly desired. Navigating to some sites can be challenging for larger vehicles, as noted by one visitor: "Google Maps doesn't have an option for large vehicles so I made my way manually and the trip took an extra hour or more to arrive than planned. Not anyone's fault—just divulging for awareness." The Long Island parkway system has height restrictions that prevent RVs from using these routes, requiring alternate navigation. Most camping areas in Suffolk County remain open year-round, though amenities like water hookups may be seasonal. Beach-adjacent sites tend to fill quickly during summer weekends and holidays.

Waterfront access represents a significant draw for campers visiting the Shoreham area, with several campgrounds situated near beaches or offering water views. Watch Hill Fire Island Campground provides a distinctive beach camping experience, with one visitor noting, "Beautiful location steps away from the beach. Listen to the waves crashing as you sleep and stargaze over the clear ocean." Mosquitoes can be problematic at coastal sites, particularly in summer months, so appropriate repellent is recommended. The camping areas vary in privacy levels, with some offering well-spaced, wooded sites while others feature more open layouts with limited separation between camping spots. County parks like Smith Point and Blydenburgh provide a balance of natural settings with convenient amenities, making them popular choices for families and first-time campers exploring Long Island's outdoor opportunities.

    Gentiles Campground

    Nice place to stay

Quiet CG near Waterbury CT. Close to major stores for resupply. CG has lots of friendly seasonal campers and lots of other sites. Most sites seem pretty level, but there are some steep roads in the CG. There is an airport next to CG, but it is for single engine private planes only so not a problem. Not by a major road so little traffic noise. I would stay here again.

    Niantic KOA

    I mean wow!!

So much going on! They will give free shuttle rides to 3 beaches & downtown Niantic, CT.

We had tried to get a deluxe location and not completely booked. This is the weekend before Labor Day and they were vanishing point the owner / shuttle driver, John, asked us if we would want to move on Sunday after a bunch of people moved out. And we said absolutely because we're going to be here for 3 more nights.

And it is huge and amazing! If you want to pay a little extra for the deluxe request slot 92!

    Wildwood State Park Campground

    Our go-to spot

My wife and I love this campground. It is right at the entrance to wine country on Long Island and has a beach on the Long Island Sound. (A little rocky on the north shore)

    Niantic KOA

    Great amenities, staff and location

Charming, full of wonderful amenities and nice extras. Nice staff, fun coin scavenger hunt, great pool, well stocked store, wide sites, lots of grass/trees and space to stretch out. Missing full hook ups but the staff and overall vibe more than make up for it. Community garden was something we hadn’t seen before - super fun.

    Perfect place

We stayed there with our RV for 2 nights.  We had a spot right next to the pool and the docks. Very convenient.  The staff does a great job.

River Highlands State Park River Campground

    Beautiful But Beware of Arachnids

We only visited for the day and left around dawn, but the campsite was absolutely beautiful—especially with its location right by the river. As a heads-up, the outhouse did have quite a few wolf spiders (which might be expected in a natural setting like this). Otherwise, it’s a peaceful and scenic spot worth seeing!

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

    Worst Camp Hosts

Absolute worst Camp Hosts. They cancel every event they schedule while receiving free beach camping all summer. They’re an embarassment and a constant disappointment for young children. Shame on you and shame on Hammonasset.
