Camping sites near Greenville, New York range from secluded woodland settings to waterfront locations with Hudson River views. Most campgrounds in this region sit at elevations between 400-1,100 feet, creating moderate temperature variations between day and night even during summer months. Cell service remains spotty in the more densely forested areas, particularly in the western sections of Harriman State Park where signal strength drops significantly in valley areas.
What to do
Swimming at nearby beaches: Beaver Pond Campground offers a sandy beach at Lake Welch with lifeguard-monitored areas. "A stones throw from NYC this beautiful area combines Lake Welch and Harriman State Park. This camp ground is laid back away from the busy activity of the big city. If you want to get away and relax you can come here to walk, swim and camp. The beach is secured with lifeguards and shower and bathroom facilities are available," notes Brian O. from Beaver Pond Campground.
Hiking the extensive trail network: Ward Pound Ridge Reservation provides over 40 miles of hiking trails within a single reservation. "This is a great place to camp. The shelter sites are large and private with access to hiking trails and make for a unique experience. The staff is friendly as well," shares jeremy S. from Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.
Water activities on Canopus Lake: Fahnestock State Park offers boat rentals and fishing opportunities across multiple water bodies. "They even have boat rentals - or you can bring your own boat to launch! If you are into fishing, there is another lake and two ponds that our neighbor campers said were great for catching panfish - one fisherman said he had caught several bass weighing over 3 pounds!!" reports Shelly B.
What campers like
Platform tent camping: The raised platforms at several campgrounds provide additional comfort during wet conditions. "The biggest positive about Beaver Pond is how spread out it was. You definitely feel like you have your own space and are not camping on top of your neighbor. Many of the camping options were on platforms which is especially nice if it recently rained or if you are expecting rain during your stay," explains Ethan K.
Off-season quietness: Mid-week and off-season stays offer significantly more peaceful experiences. "We stayed here on a Thursday night in September prior to taking off backpacking. The campground was clean and quiet. RV hook-ups, tent platforms, and rustic tent sites were available. Ranger said that during summer weekends the grounds fill up and can be quite noisy, but mid-week during the off-season it was great," shares Rebecca S. from Clarence Fahnestock State Park Campground.
Rustic cabin options: Sebago Cabin Camp provides a step up from tent camping while maintaining a rustic experience. "Sebago has a huge lake and great beach area. It was perfect for lounging and swimming in during a hot summer day. We were able to rent a cabin which was equipped with an outside grill and picnic area. It is great if you are going with a group/family and people want to sleep inside a cabin as oppose to a tent outside," reports Ethan K. from Sebago Cabin Camp.
