Glamping close to Greenville, New York offers diverse options from basic yurts to luxury domes. Located in the Hudson Valley region near the New Jersey border, this area sits at the foothills of several mountain ranges with elevations between 300-1800 feet. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing while summer camping season typically runs May through October with higher humidity levels than inland locations.
What to do
Hiking the Appalachian Trail: High Point State Park Campground connects to the AT for day hikes of varying difficulty. "I spent two nights camping with my niece and this campground was perfect. The site was maybe a 50-yard walk-in and we barely heard anyone around us and had a real wilderness feel. We fit in a hike up to the Appalachian Trail from our campsite," reports Justin P.
Lakefront recreation: Mountain Lakes Park provides multiple water-based activities. "A gorgeous piece of land that contains lakes, a lookout and Mt. Bailey, the highest point in Westchester County. A dirt road loops through the property with trails off and through it," explains Ben H.
Water sports: West Point FMWR Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area offers a swimming beach and fishing areas. "We were very impressed with the playground on site! Unfortunately, due to our early start in the camping season the weather did not allow us to enjoy fishing or the beach or water hook ups, however all areas looked well maintained," notes Jacey H.
What campers like
Secluded tent platforms: Campers appreciate the thoughtful site design at Mahlon Dickerson Reservation. "We have been going here for over 2 years and we love it. The campground is small but also secluded. We always hike to the lake here, it's a very easy hike and also very peaceful. At the campgrounds there is a platform where you can pitch your tent," explains Paulene-Amanda M.
Clean facilities: Camp Glen Gray maintains high standards for their rustic accommodations. "Great Camp!!! One rustic place with many hiking trails to choose from. Camp also provides trucking of gear weather permitting. No vehicles allowed to drive through camp. Trading Post for treats and other items," says Jose N.
Proximity to NYC: Great Divide Campground offers a convenient escape from urban environments. "This was our second visit to the campground and the first weekend they opened to RVs after Covid. No amenities were open but we had a great time fishing in the lake. Spots are spacious and campers were spread out throughout the large campground," writes Jojo P.
What you should know
Military-only access: Some facilities near Greenville have restricted access. "Unfortunately for me, Round Pond is camping reserved for active and retired military personnel only. We drove through and the whole space is rather large. There are several signs everywhere making it clear that it is only for military," reports Ethan K.
Winter limitations: Most glamping accommodations close seasonally. High Point State Park Campground operates on a restricted schedule: "Camping for summer is pretty limited to Sawmill Lake, as the other locations are for groups or winter camping. Camps are secluded from each other and most if not all have an elevated space to put tents or chairs," explains Damia F.
Bathroom facilities vary: Moon Valley Campground focuses on glamping accommodations rather than bathroom amenities. "This was a great campsite nestled in the foothills of Northern NJ on the NY border. Small, clean with great views and great location for hiking, cruising etc. Bring your tent or use the existing glamping tents," advises Bob F.
Tips for camping with families
Look for scheduled activities: Family-oriented campgrounds provide structured entertainment. "Great family run campground. Owners are a blast. Most sites are level. Some areas are a little steeper then I would like to set up on, but that's me. Nice small lake with boats to use. Nice small beach. Lots of weekend activities," recommends Scott N. at Great Divide Campground.
Consider dome glamping: Unique accommodations create memorable experiences for children. "Jake from the Dyrt here! The Moon Valley Campground is an awesome spot for those who want to camp in luxury, with their awesome dome structures. The campground is also near the Appalachian trail while still only about an hour from Manhattan!" explains Jake C.
Find tent platforms: Panther Lake Camping Resort offers amenities that appeal to families with children. "Fun camping place to books groups. Very kid and pet friendly, lake to fish and kayak on, lots of activities, great pool and awesome hot tub. Only down side is that even though they say they have wifi, you can't hook up to it unless you are at the pavilion," notes Cynthia H.
Tips from RVers
Limited hookup options: Many glamping sites near Greenville have limited RV infrastructure. "So, we got in with no reservation, which was great. It's in the same park as the high point, also great. The sites are varied, some have tent platforms, it's just off the AT, but we have a trailer and the 'trailer' sites aren't level. Showers are at the day use area, from 10-5:30, no trailer dump," cautions Grant M. about High Point State Park.
Water hookups: Great Divide Campground accommodates larger rigs with hookups. "Very clean and quiet. Website lists water hook ups at long distances but they have hose reels to help with that. Our site (15) said 75' however the 50' hose reel made it to our rv connection. Trash dumpster is an easy walk and the dump station has a flush hose point," explains antruze about Mahlon Dickerson Reservation.
Elevation challenges: Prepare for hilly terrain that may affect RV parking and setup. "Easy to navigate our 38 ft. RV. Easy to dump and fill. Peaceful. Close to train to N.Y. City," shares Nancymike K. about Mahlon Dickerson Reservation.
