Camping near Garnerville, New York centers around the Hudson Valley and Ramapo Mountains, where elevations range from 200-1,300 feet. The region experiences warm summers with temperatures averaging 75-85°F from June through August, while spring and fall temperatures fluctuate between 45-65°F. Overnight temperatures can drop significantly, particularly in higher-elevation camping areas like Harriman State Park.
What to do
Hiking on historic trails: Clarence Fahnestock State Park Campground connects to multiple trail systems including parts of the Appalachian Trail. "There are facilities and a small grill (burgers, popsicles, etc.) at the beach. The lake is clear and sandy (some rocks in sand on shore, but standard for imported sand), and many families seemed to have traveled up for a day trip," notes Jess M.
Swimming and beach access: Several campgrounds offer water activities within walking distance of campsites. At Croton Point Park, "a private beach is opened from Wednesday to the weekend with life guards on duty," according to Anil S., who adds that the park features "gorgeous scenery along the river."
Winter camping options: For year-round camping opportunities, check what's available during off-season months. "We came in October to celebrate Halloween in sleepy hollow! This is a great campsite and reasonably priced. Was close to bear mountains state part and the train station is right there!" reports Wendy C. about Croton Point Park.
What campers like
Platform campsites: Raised tent platforms provide advantages in wet conditions. "The biggest positive about Beaver Pond is how spread out it was. You definitely feel like you have your own space and are not camping on top of your neighbor. Many of the camping options were on platforms which is especially nice if it recently rained," explains Ethan K.
Proximity to NYC: Many campgrounds are accessible for quick getaways from the city. At Sebago Cabin Camp — Harriman State Park, visitors appreciate that it's "only an hour away from NYC with so much to do and see," according to Sara P., who adds, "Absolutely zero phone service (for T-Mobile) which was AMAZING."
Off-season tranquility: Weekday and off-season camping provides a completely different experience. "We stayed here on a Thursday night in September prior to taking off backpacking. The campground was clean and quiet... Ranger said that during summer weekends the grounds fill up and can be quite noisy, but mid-week during the off-season it was great," notes Rebecca S.
What you should know
Bear activity awareness: The region has black bears that campers should prepare for. "Welcome to Bear Mountain" grumbles the park ranger as he sits in complete darkness! He is in his ranger hut, checking in the late evening arrivals to the campground... He offers us a highlighted map to our site, wishes us a good stay, and gives us the run down on bear activity in the area," recounts Steve W.
Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds have specific reservation processes. At Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, "there is no phone or internet reservations and has to be made in person at the office. I would recommend call earlier and come in few minutes earlier to 9 am when the office opens to find the best spots," advises Anil S.
Site variability: Individual sites at the same campground can differ dramatically in privacy and features. "All sites were so different. There was a storm the night before our arrival date, all campers were evacuated and they did a fantastic job clearing all the debris and downed trees before our arrival. The camp areas were secluded if you wanted more private camping (also super unique layouts)," reports Erinn N.
Tips for camping with families
Playground accessibility: When camping with children, consider sites near play areas. At West Point FMWR Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area, campers find a "playground within sight of our camper" which creates a "peaceful and gorgeous campsite, with plenty of space between sites," according to Thomas.
Weekday visits for reduced crowding: Plan family trips during weekdays to avoid crowds, particularly at popular swimming areas. "Quiet time at night is laughable as the enjoyment of being in nature rages on into the early morning. I myself could go either way; I'm not overly bothered by the late nights and chorus of noise, but living in the megalopolis that I call home, it would be nice to not have the ruckus constantly follow you to the great outdoors," notes Steve W.
Pet-friendly shelters: For families camping with dogs, shelter sites can provide additional comfort. "The shelter sites are large and private with access to hiking trails and make for a unique experience. The staff is friendly as well," reports Jeremy S. about Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, which offers year-round camping with pets allowed.
Tips from RVers
RV site selection: For RV campers, reservation timing matters for securing preferred sites. At Black Bear RV Park, "We have short driving days and we try stop after every couple hundred miles for one night at a time, just to sleep, shower and eat. This was our first stop and primarily chosen because it was one of the few places along our route that was open for RVs in the off season," explains Gabbie Y.
Seasonal considerations for hookups: RV campers should verify utility availability, especially in colder months. "Unfortunately at this site, the heated water pipe was broken so we had no water for the night... I imagine that camping here during the regular season is a much better experience. As it seems to be rare to find open campgrounds for winter camping, this is probably a good option," notes Gabbie Y.
Military-only options: Some excellent RV facilities near Garnerville are reserved for military personnel. "Being military-only keeps standards high, the campground clean and well maintained. Between rustic power-only campsites that give you a true camping experience and upgraded but still simple cabins which allow campers of all ages and abilities to enjoy the outdoor experience, there is something for everyone," explains Heather M. about West Point FMWR Lake Frederick.
