    Slumberland at the River's Edge

Kayak camping at its finest, right on the upper Delaware River!

Me and two friends do a yearly kayak trip down the Delaware river and have progressively moved north each year. This year, MDW of 2023, we were traveling between Narrowsburg, NY and Port Jervis, NY. Traveling 10-15 miles a day, we ended our second day of paddling at Slumberland on the Rivers Edge. The host put out a orange cone that made finding our campsite easy and a nice beach made unloading and loading kayaks pretty easy. The accommodations were top notch, with lights already on, and a table set, along with a grill, fire pit, and covered porch and canvas tent that housed two queen sized beds along with an electric stove and a woodstove. We were able to relax on the adirondack chairs on the deck as the sun went down and our fire (wood provided by host) and the porch lights remained glowing. It was nice change from camping in our tents and sleeping pads as we are used to along the river, as the beds were very comfortable, and the heater and canvas tent kept us warm during 40 degree temperatures at night. It was quiet and peaceful and you had your own space far from the other sites at slumberland (unlike many other campgrounds along the river). We all enjoyed our stay and had a great time and I would highly recommend to any kayak campers along the river looking for more than just a patch of grass to set up a tent on.

    Alder lake

    One of our favorites!!

We arrived here early afternoon, which ended up being perfect timing as we could set up everything and catch sunset by the fire. The place is pretty easy to access with paved road the whole way there except for the last 1/2 mile where it is very bumpy. Some might say 4*4 but we made it just fine in our little Camry. There are two campsites located right outside of the park where you can park your car next to your tent but we opted to hike in. The first spot is less than 1/2 mile down the path, with the next three in the next mile. The campsites are very spacious with lots of room between you and other campers, and have a fire pit and some have picnic tables. We had a stellar time just hiking down the path and relaxing by the water. There’s no noise at night apart from the running water of the stream and we had a very peaceful weekend. We’re most definitely returning!

    Bowman Lake State Park Campground

    Woodsy, pet friendly, and private

We booked this as our first real camping trip with our new trailer, can’t recommend that for everyone lol, but we had a lovely time.

We had a back in site with a fire pit, picnic table, and no hook ups. It was gravel and not super level, but we made it work. There was a potable water spigot a few sites over and a bathroom with showers a short walk away.

This is a great spot for tent camping, so if that’s your vibe this place is perfect. We had a lot of tree cover so we didn’t even need our air conditioning on during an 85 degree day. There are a lot of mosquitoes, but with some bug spray and a couple thermacell mosquito repellents, we were comfortable the whole time. I loved cooking over the fire, the pit had a cinder block wall around it to set a grate on and block the wind. We had a lot of privacy because the campgrounds next to us were empty, but even if there were people nearby there was about 20-30 ft between our site and the next.

The lake is small but calm and great for kayaking. There is a little “beach” there for swimming, but know that it’s a soft lake bottom further out.

We really liked it here and booked another visit in August.

    Oakland Valley Campground

    Family friendly campground

Nice, family friendly campground with 3 levels to camp at. Top level has a pool, showers and bathrooms with laundry area and game room. Middle level has open field with bathrooms with sinks and running water. There is water and electric on the sites at the middle level. River level has more primitive bathrooms and some bathrooms with running water. You can camp right next to the river and it has a great view.

    Neversink River Resort

    run down but decent-

Not a whole lot for children to do. There’s a bounce pillow to jump on and a really old and rickity swing set and an old metal slide. also, there’s a pool, but that is in a state of disrepair. The concrete around Is all cracked and damaged, and one of the ladders to get out was missing, but the water was clean (most Important!). They Inflate these slides, but charge a ridiculous amount to use them. They have a snack snack shop with Ice cream. The campground itself is large, and our site was right on the river and of an ample size. We had the place to ourselves on Friday, and then Saturday they stacked people right on top of us, even though there were ample other sites to spread other campers out.. Sadly, there is trash, beer bottle caps, and broken glass everywhere. I did my best to clean up, but there was still stuff all over the place. You can bring rafts and tubes and float on the river, which looked fun.. they do not monitor nor enforce quiet hours, so we had to listen to latin music blasted until well past midnight (we finally gave up on the grounds to do their job and tell them to turn music down/off so we had to) and then they were loud/wasted drunk until the early hours of the morning.. the price was high for what was here... you would think for the cost you would get more—especially better service of the grounds (keeping it clean and keeping it at a respectable noise level during quiet hours.) Not impressed with this place. I’m sure there are better places nearby—

    Keen Lake Resort Campground

    Amazing place.

My family has been going there for years and finally decided that this was our final place and made it our seasonal camp g place 3 years ago. My boys absolutely love it and always have something to do. They have activity coordinators that make sure there is something to do for all ages every hour of the day! The security is great and patrol to make sure quiet hours are quiet to be courtiers to other campers that want quiet time. The bath houses are constantly being cleaned and restocked. They have cabins, houses and trailers for rent also for ones that don't want to rough it but want to spent time at the lake. There is a lodge that can be used as a party or wedding event. This place is our getaway place that we are glad to go to every weekend and truly enjoy every getaway minute!

    Thousand Trails Rondout Valley

    Beautiful campground

As part of the Thousand Trails group, this campground has many amenities. It offers a pool, playground, and activities that include bocce ball, shuffleboard, and horseshoes. We loved our full hookup site minus the neighbors’ weekend ragers. (At least they turned off the music at quiet hours).

The creek that runs by the campground is gorgeous, and my kids had fun finding Crayfish.

The nearby towns are adorable and offer shopping, hiking, farms, and more.

Nice small campground close to Cooperstown

Very quiet small campground - friendly staff - large spots/mainly bigger setups. Only downside is there is not a hiking/walking path down to the lake from the campground. Very nice bathrooms w shower and wash station. Electricity and water available at or near each campsite.

Guide to Downsville

Glamping options near Downsville, New York occupy the western edge of the Catskill Mountains, with elevations ranging from 1,000-3,000 feet. This region experiences four distinct seasons with particularly vibrant fall foliage from mid-September through October. Winter temperatures can drop below freezing, while summer evenings cool significantly even after warm days, making campfires particularly welcome at dusk.

What to do

Fishing in "Trout Town USA": Roscoe Campsites provides direct access to the Beaverkill River, a premier fishing destination. One guest noted, "Right on the Beaverkill River, it's quiet, clean, gorgeous, brand new cabins and concrete pads. Fisherman's heaven." The area offers some of the best trout fishing in the Northeast.

Paddle sports on calm waters: Keen Lake Resort Campground offers multiple water recreation options. "We had SUPs and kayaks to take on the lake and our sites were right next to the boat launch. Each day we would paddle over to the swimming area on the lake. It was awesome," shared one visitor who stayed for five nights in August.

Hiking forest trails: Alder Lake provides access to several hiking trails of varying difficulty. A camper reported, "The hike around the lake is a lovely, easy walk. The hike trail that connects to the far end of the lake is 6+ miles and while there were no real views, it was lovely. We also hiked the balsam lake fire tower which had nice views of the area."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Visitors consistently praise the maintenance standards at Russell Brook Campsites. A satisfied camper shared, "Very clean. Felt like we had the place to ourselves." The campground maintains its bathroom facilities to high standards even during busy periods.

Natural swimming spots: Families appreciate the accessibility of natural swimming areas. One Russell Brook visitor mentioned, "Our site was massive (39) and had direct access to Russell Brook. Couldn't keep my son out of the water." The shallow, clear streams provide safe swimming options for children.

Dark night skies: Stargazing opportunities excel in this region. At Oquaga Creek State Park Campground, visitors note the exceptional night sky visibility. One reviewer mentioned, "You can kayak and swim in the lake, and see incredible stars at night." The park's distance from major cities reduces light pollution.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most glamping close to Downsville, New York operates on a limited calendar. Roscoe Campsites typically opens from May through October, with similar seasons at other local campgrounds. A visitor noted, "We were able to tent fairly close to the lot. No cell service. If you bring a handsaw youll be good for firewood. Bugs were pretty bad."

Site placement considerations: At Roscoe Campsites, tent sites differ from typical secluded spots. One camper explained, "The 'tent sites' are VERY close together, and there is nothing separating them. If you're looking for quiet seclusion, don't even remotely consider this spot as an option." Riverside sites may experience more foot traffic.

Limited cell service: Most campgrounds in the region have minimal or no cell coverage. A visitor to Alder Lake mentioned, "We arrived here early afternoon, which ended up being perfect timing as we could set up everything and catch sunset by the fire. The place is pretty easy to access with paved road the whole way there except for the last 1/2 mile where it is very bumpy."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Crazy Acres Campground offers family-friendly amenities. One visitor observed, "We are full timers and took our daughter, her boyfriend and our granddaughter for a weekend camping. We had fun, plenty of activities, a big lake to fish in and a pool to relax by. Nighttime family fun as well." The campground schedules regular activities for children.

Cabin options: For families new to outdoor experiences, several campgrounds offer cabin accommodations. One Roscoe visitor stated, "The farm, playground, beach, and shallow river make it a great, easy entry point for new and younger campers." Cabins typically include basic furnishings but require bringing your own bedding.

Weather preparedness: The Catskill region experiences significant temperature variations, even in summer. Pack layers and rain gear regardless of season. A camper at Alder Lake shared, "We stayed three nights in late October. Grabbed one of the two vehicle accessible campsites along the road which had some very light traffic."

Tips from RVers

Site dimensions: Many glamping facilities near Downsville accommodate RVs with limitations. At Deer Haven Campground, "On top of hill right outside of town. Stayed during the week and was able to get a more secluded, wooded site. Most of them are pretty open. It was quiet at night. You can hear some traffic from down below at busier times. Nice walking trail around the property through woods and field."

Hookup availability: Water and electric connections vary significantly between campgrounds. Some sites offer full hookups while others provide minimal services. At Roscoe Campsites, visitors note the concrete pads make leveling easier but tent campers may find the ground "very rocky" beneath the pads.

Off-season benefits: Visiting in shoulder seasons can provide a more secluded experience. One Oquaga Creek visitor shared, "Memorial Day weekend, campground was full but never felt crowded. Sites are large with a good buffer, fire ring & grill. Good mix of tent & trailer. Staff was pleasant and helpful."
