CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Cherry Hill Campground accommodates pets across its spacious, hedge-separated sites in Darien Center, New York. The campground features clean facilities, hot showers, and is conveniently located across from Six Flags Darien Lake theme park. Dogs are welcome without additional pet fees, unlike many campgrounds that charge extra. Six Flags Darien Lake Campground, Sleepy Hollow Lake Campground, and Darien Lakes State Park also welcome pets, offering a range of accommodation options including tent sites, RV hookups, and cabins. Most campgrounds require pets to remain leashed when outside the camper or tent. Clean bathrooms and dishwashing stations complement the natural setting despite the proximity to the amusement park.

The campground area provides several pet exercise options with walking paths and nearby trails. Many sites feature sufficient space for dogs to relax while remaining on leash at designated campsites. Wildlife feeders throughout Cherry Hill Campground create excellent bird watching opportunities while keeping pets entertained. Water access is available at select campgrounds like Sleepy Hollow Lake Campground, where pets can cool off during summer months. Most campgrounds maintain quiet hours starting at midnight, though enforcement varies during busy concert weekends. Sites located farther from main camping loops provide more seclusion for campers with pets that may be sensitive to noise or other animals. Nearby veterinary services are available within driving distance for emergency situations.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    30+ years of great memories!

We have camped at Letchworth State Park for nearly 30 years. Recent updates to playground equipment and restroom/shower facilities have brought the amenities into the 21st century. The price is reasonable, and the park is a gem. A couple cons to consider: pets only allowed in three loops. Quite often, pet loop reservations are maxed quickly. There is a two dog limit, which excludes many campers. If you are used to private campgrounds, realize that services are limited here. Mediocre camp store and laundry; both get the job done, but leave a lot to be desired.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Letchworth State Park, NY

Letchworth State Park is known as the Grand Canyon of the East and is located in Mt. Morris New York. My husband and I visited regularly when we lived near Rochester, NY. The park is stunning and is fit for camping whether you’re in a tent, RV or choosing to rent a gorgeous cabin. There are many walking and hiking trails for adventurers of all types. Make sure you bring your camera as the views are all photo worthy. The camping price is right due to the fact that the park is run by the state. A great place to stay especially in the Summer!!

    Shamrock Pines Campground

    Clean and friendly

Called up on Friday afternoon of Labor Day weekend and they accommodated us for two nights.  John and his staff were friendly and welcoming.  Very clean campground with mostly seasonal sites.  Several overnight sites with electric and water.  These sites were mostly gravel and cut into a bank so that there is some separation.  Surrounded by trees but grounds are well kept.  Fully fenced dog park that was great for our pup.  A couple of ponds for kids to fish and what looks like a nice pool.  Quiet hours observed.  On Saturday night there was a band in an outdoor stage that was great.

Close enough to Ellicottville to enjoy the shops, brewery and restaurants there.

Only thing I would mention is the dump station is simply just a pipe off one of the driveways with a water hose.  Not a problem and it works, just not typical of dump stations.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Good weekend campsite

Not technically in the Finger Lakes but still one of the most beautiful parts of Western New York State. Splurge and eat at the Glen Iris Inn! Great for cycling and hiking but no swimming. I love taking visitors here in all seasons but in autumn it is exceptional. I’ve stayed in a few tent sites and all are wooded and pretty private with your standard basic amenities. This is a popular park so make reservations.

The Grand Canyon of the East!

I went to college right near Letchworth State Park so I spent many wonderful weekends there! There is a reason why they call it the Grand Canyon of the East. Not only can you check out the beautiful waterfalls, but there are also many awesome trails, rivers, and caves to check out. When I would camp, we would rent a camp site with our tent but, you could camp with your RV or even rent a cabin. Ive gone every month of the year, but these pictures were from my birthday in January. Letchworth is one of the best parks in New York state and a definite must see!

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Letchworth State Park

My son and I have a new favorite campground.  We absolutely fell in love with this park.  I find it odd that even though I grew up only an hour away, we never camped there.  Big mistake!  There are many trails to hike on and beautiful views of the gorge and river.  You have to drive to many of the places but it's worth it.  There are many souvenir and snack stands as well as a pool (again, you have to drive to them).  The camp store is small but well stocked with a laundry attached. Some loops allow pets and others don't.  If you want to bring your pet, please check to make sure you reserve a pet-friendly loop. Unfortunately for us, it rained the entire time we were there so we never got to walk the trails or use the pool.  Keep an eye out for other activities.  There are balloon rides, craft shows, etc. that happen throughout the summer. With so much to do in the park, you don't really need to leave but nearby is the Arcade and Attica Railroad.  It's a nice little ride through the countryside.  There is also a small dam that you can visit (we missed out this last time).  I highly recommend visiting.

Guide to Darien Center

Darien Center camping options exist within western New York's varied terrain, located approximately 30 miles east of Buffalo at an elevation of around 900 feet. The area experiences four distinct seasons with warm summers averaging 75-80°F and cold winters with frequent snow. Local campgrounds range from lakeside locations to wooded settings with sites specifically designed to accommodate both recreational activities and animal companions.

What to do

Wildlife viewing and bird watching: Cherry Hill Campground maintains wildlife feeders throughout the property creating prime bird watching opportunities. As one visitor noted, "With a number of wildlife feeders throughout, it was a great place to do a little bird watching/photography" according to Sinclaire B.

Swimming options: Sleepy Hollow Lake Campground offers both lake swimming and a salt water pool for campers seeking water recreation. Frank N. shares, "Great campground, they have it all, a huge lake to swim in, a salt water pool, fitness center, well stocked store, small restaurant with finger foods."

Hiking trails: Darien Lakes State Park Campground features miles of hiking trails for various skill levels. Jeremy H. describes it as "a nicely kept, clean and quiet gem" with "miles of hiking trails, nice 'lakes' to fish and swim in" plus "a fairly new Frisbee golf course."

Seasonal activities: Local campgrounds often coordinate special events based on the time of year. Amy T. from Jellystone Park of Western New York mentions "their Halloween weekends are full of fun and fright!" while also noting "they have the best fireworks for July 4."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Multiple campgrounds in the area maintain well-kept restrooms and showers. Carol B. from Darien Lakes State Park commented that it was "Clean and well maintained. We were there on a weekday, told weekends are busy. Not buggy."

Variety of accommodation options: Sites range from basic tent camping to full-service RV hookups. At Sleepy Hollow Lake, according to Nate & His Reina Puertorriqueña H., "The staff was really friendly and judging by the regulars, they are always this friendly. There is lots to do, swimming, fishing, volleyball, bike riding, etc."

Campground layout: Cherry Hill Campground offers privacy between sites through natural barriers. Jen J. appreciated that it was "Immersed in nature despite being across from 6 flags" and mentioned "This place just exudes kindness and good vibes. No hookups but that adds to the charm."

Seasonal camper communities: Some locations have established seasonal communities. Rich L. from Southwoods RV Resort observed "Very nice people from weekend warriors to the seasonal campers" after visiting in August.

What you should know

Noise levels vary: Campgrounds near concert venues and theme parks may experience higher noise levels during events. Laura Nicole A. from Six Flags Darien Lake Campground points out that "People mostly stay here for one of two reason. Because they don't want to drive home drunk from a concert, or they have 14 loud kids that want to be at the amusement park."

Weekday vs. weekend crowds: Several campgrounds report significant differences between weekday and weekend occupancy. Carol B. mentions about Darien Lakes State Park that "We were there on a weekday, told weekends are busy."

Reservation timing: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially during peak season and event weekends. Cory W. notes about Cherry Hill that they "have stayed at Cherry Hill a couple times, mostly for Darien Lake concerts" highlighting its popularity during events.

Transportation options: Getting back to campgrounds after events requires planning. Cory W. explains Cherry Hill "offers shuttles before the events. However, getting back across the road to the campground can be challenging... walking back to the campground is disallowed. Sherrifs will stop you if you try."

Tips for camping with families

Water recreation options: Children enjoy the various swimming areas available at different campgrounds. At Jellystone Park of Western New York, Sara H. appreciated that "Put put was free. So many things to do with the kids. Heated pools. Beach was clean."

Playground facilities: Some campgrounds offer extensive playground equipment for various age groups. Jim S. mentioned that Darien Lakes State Park "has a nice beach and all newly remodeled bathrooms."

Theme park proximity: Beaver Meadow Family Campground provides access to multiple recreation options while maintaining a quieter environment. Amanda K. highlights "Many nature trails, Visitors center, Swimming pool, Beautiful sunsets, Fishing, Well Sized campsites" among the positives.

Family-focused events: Scheduled activities keep children entertained during your stay. Matthew M. from Jellystone Park said "This place is great for a family. Water park, fishing, kayaking, swimming. It has it all. We went on the 4th of July and they had amazing fireworks and activities galore for the kids."

Tips from RVers

Site selection factors: Consider proximity to amenities when choosing your site. Nancy W. notes about Southwoods RV Resort: "The campground is quite large and has separate sections for seasonal and transient campers and has a variety of different campsites from back-ins to pull-thrus, 50 to 30-amps, and full hook-up to water and electric only."

Pet-friendly considerations: All major campgrounds in the area accommodate pets, but specific sites may offer better options for animal companions. Wilson W. mentions at Cherry Hill Campground: "Truck camped here. Early season conditions were wet and the owners let me pick my site because the one I had reserved was muddy."

Hookup availability: Not all campgrounds offer full hookups. At Cherry Hill Campground, Jen J. notes "No hookups but that adds to the charm. We were fine using solar in our van."

Park layout navigation: Some campgrounds have challenging terrain. Jay from Beaver Meadow Family Campground mentioned "Tricky roads but hey it's camping" while also noting it's "Very quiet and peaceful."
