    Highly recommend

We camped in campground 1 right next to the play ground. Super clean, had a view of the lake. Within walking distance of the marina. Everyone was very friendly. My only complaint is the first night we had super noisy neighbors. I'm all for music and a good time but past quiet hours I think one should tone it down a bit. I assumed the host would tell them to be quiet. It did take me complaining the next morning, and then the host went to talk to them. Rest of the trip was smooth as can be! Kayak trails on the lake...beautiful clean swimming beaches. Can't wait to go back :)

A little rowdy but everyone nice

Way off the beaten path but we had a good time. The campground was clean and everyone was nice. It did get a little rowdy on the weekend but folks respected the quiet hours.

    Bathrooms decent with showers.

T-Mobile and Verizon in places. Hard to get in a camper Several sites that can take advantage of Starlink.

    Springfield - Route 66 KOA

    Do you like trains?

Because you’re going to see and hear a lot of them, as there is a train track very close to the site.

This campground itself was nice. The staff was so extremely friendly. The trees are old and tall, creating a canopy over the sites, so even with the weather cresting 95°, the site felt nice.

I brought my travel trailer and stayed on lot 28. It was a KOA Patio site (a cement patio area with a table, chairs, and fire pit) that had city water, sewer, and electric. The lot was well cared for and my spot was incredibly flat/level. It’s always a nice feeling to pull in and set up with minimal effort.

The pool is small, but just a short walk from any site on the grounds. The clubhouse/store is well stoked if you forgot anything, or if you decide you need another six pack.

As another review mentioned, you can order pizza. The hours are reasonable. You can also order fresh made mini donuts in the morning. I nice treat for the family or with coffee on your way out!

If it wasn’t for the trains coming by blowing their horns, this would easily be a favorite spot.

COE Harry S Truman Reservoir Long Shoal Park

Great views, nice sites, okay amenities.

    Stayed 7/22/200 - $15/night

    Site 97

Lake-view sites, beaches, flush toilets and showers, all for$15/night. Don’t have super high expectations.

    PROS:

Great sites on the water. Good space with picnic table and fire rings with a grate. Site 97 was on a corner, with a neighbor to one side, and lots of space between sites to the other.

    CONS:

Showers aren’t great. Cobwebs and mold. First door didn’t even lock. Wide gaps with no curtain. No soap in bathrooms.(During COVID). Can’t expect much for$15/night, but bathrooms/showers were disappointing.

You can setup in the grass, right by the water and enjoy the beach. The ranger also told us of beach access just outside the park, across the street. Bathroom/shower house was a bit of a walk from our site, but nothing crazy. Worth it for the views. No problems with AT&T cell service.

Military Park Fort Leonard Wood Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area

    First Camp Trip of 2026

Just one look around and we spontaneously decided to camp that night to check out the area. Amazingly beautiful and well maintained campgrounds near the Lake of The Ozarks just for military families, count me in. Area is easy to navigate with bathroom facilities, playground and pavilion with grills, plenty of fishing spots, tons of rv, cabins and tent campsites. You can also rent boats, jet skis, and other outdoor gear at the admin office. We took a tent campsite toward the back of the park with beautiful lakes views and a little private beach. We cannot wait to come back to hang out longer.

    RV Express 66

    Great place

Although this is adjacent to the Interstate exit (and therefore more noisy for a Sportsmobile tent camper), it was excellent and we’d stay there again. The cement pads, clean picnic table and immaculate bathrooms, with separate private showers, were welcome after a long travel day.

    You can’t go wrong.

Guide to Pittsburg

Camping near Pittsburg, Missouri centers around the 7,820-acre Pomme de Terre Lake in the rolling Ozark hills. The area experiences hot summers with temperatures averaging 85-95°F from June to August, while spring and fall offer milder conditions with temperatures between 60-75°F. Many campgrounds in this region feature lakeside sites with water access via private paths from campsites to shorelines.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: The Pittsburg Area Campground offers excellent fishing access with private paths to water edges. According to a camper, "This has become our favorite family campground. The sites on the lake are awesome and large. The showers are clean and private. Fishing is great! My kids love it too!"

Water recreation: At Stockton State Park Campground, kayaking enthusiasts can explore marked water trails. A visitor noted, "They have some pretty cool kayak marked trails on the lake. Beautiful sail boats to see as well!" Campers can also enjoy the swimming areas located throughout the park.

Hiking trails: Most campgrounds offer walking paths, but Cedar Ridge Campground provides access to scenic nature walks with unique features. A reviewer commented, "Nice little campground with good facilities. The swim beach is a little far from the camp, but if you walk down the trails there are great places to swim near camp including 'Chicken Rock' a large island out in the lake the kids love to swim to and jump off."

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Many campers appreciate the room between sites at Long Shoal Park. One reviewer mentioned, "Sites are spaced a good distance apart, nice clean lots with fire ring, picnic table and 30 amp. The flush restrooms are cleaned everyday and very nice."

Scenic views: The glamping locations around Pittsburg provide excellent vantage points. At Pittsburg Area Campground, a visitor shared, "Two parks in one. The Hermitage and The Pittsburgh. We chose the 400 loop of Pittsburgh for its secluded spots. Spaces are not stacked on top of each other. You're in the woods so take bug spray. Level paved lots to choose from."

Clean facilities: Travelers consistently praise the maintenance standards at Hermitage State Park Campground. A recent visitor wrote, "We picked a standard non electric site as it was level and not crowded. $8 for seniors so not bad. Lots of fishing activities here on the lake."

What you should know

Weather considerations: The area experiences seasonal changes that affect camping conditions. At Pittsburg Area Campground, one camper noted, "This parks main focus is Lake Pomme de Terra, so if you're not into being on the water - this campground may not be for you. We had a vault toilet near our site which was nice for middle of the night trips."

Train noise: Some locations have nearby train tracks that may disrupt light sleepers. At Springfield Route 66 KOA, a visitor mentioned, "If it wasn't for the trains coming by blowing their horns, this would easily be a favorite spot."

Site terrain: Some tent sites can be challenging. At Cedar Ridge Campground, a camper observed, "I noticed several of the tent sites do not have level areas for your tent. T01 site does not have close parking unless you are able to park in the handcap parking."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. Long Shoal Park provides options for young visitors with "both loops had decent playgrounds for the kids."

Swimming beaches: Bennett Spring State Park Campground offers water activities suitable for various ages. A visitor noted, "Great place to take the family. The roads are all paved so it made biking for our kids easy and enjoyable. The campsite was spacious and shaded. The kids loved playing in the creek and hiking the trails."

Family-friendly amenities: Some locations cater specifically to groups with children. At Springfield Route 66 KOA, a visitor shared, "This KOA is clean with wonderful parks and a nice pool. It was a great place to stay while driving to our destination."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Many luxury glamping options in Pittsburg feature level sites. A visitor to Osage Bluff mentioned, "Booked online, pictures were a little deceiving for double campsite. Unless you are a family camping together I would avoid. Park attendant very helpful moved us to site 61."

Hookup availability: RV sites at Pittsburg Area Campground offer various utility connections. One camper explained, "The setup between restrooms and water with the sites are appropriate for accessibility. Good room and nice level areas where we stayed in the 400 loop."

Navigational considerations: Some glamping areas can be challenging to access with larger vehicles. At Long Shoal Park, a visitor noted, "Most will accommodate the largest rigs. The only service is electrical. A dump is provided, along with trash bins at the entrance. Potable water facets are scattered around."
