Pittsburg Area Campground — Pomme de Terre State Park

    Nice secluded spots

Two parks in one. The Hermitage and The Pittsburgh. We chose the 400 loop of Pittsburgh for its secluded spots. Spaces are not stacked on top of each other. You’re in the woods so take bug spray. Level paved lots to choose from. Fire rings and covered picnic tables. Lots of shade.

Pittsburg Area Campground — Pomme de Terre State Park

    Our First Popup Adventure

Our first camping adventure in the popup took us to Pomme de Terre State Park on Father’s Day of 2017. Pomme de Terre State Park is one State Park that is two completely separate campgrounds, split in half by Pomme de Terre lake. When booking pay attention to whether you are on the Hermitage side or the Pittsburgh side. Each campground has it’s own camp store, swim beach, boat launch, and sanitary disposal station.

We have camped three separate times at Pomme de Terre with all three campsites being in the 400 loop on the Pittsburgh side. This loop has been chosen due to its proximity to the bathrooms and the playground, these are key when having a 4-year-old. This loop is located in the woods with nice spacing between sites. Each site comes with a fire ring and covered picnic table. I will warn you that some of the sites on the left when you first pull into the loop are on an incline, so bring plenty of leveling pads with you if you have a trailer. If you are wanting to be close to the water this loop is not the one you will want to reserve. I would look more in the 300 loop, though those sites are gravel in case that is an issue for you, or look at the Hermitage side. The bathroom and shower house located at the entrance to loop 400 are some of the nicest that we have experience while staying in a state park. They are clean and well maintained. Located throughout the loops are vault toilets if you choose a site farther away from the main bathroom.

We enjoy the campground and marina on the Pittsburgh side. The marina is stocked with some camp essentials as well as a café for a quick bite. They also have boats, canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards for rent, for a list a prices here is the Marina’s website www.mofunparks.com. This is one of our son’s favorite stops on the trip, they have a nice selection of ice cream. The size of the marina is not large, and if it is busy the inside can be very cramped. We do prefer the swim beach on the Hermitage side it is located along a peninsula with ample room on busy days, as opposed to the Pittsburgh swim beach that is located in a cove without as much space.

When traveling between the two state parks you will travel through Hermitage, Missouri. They have a Dollar General, gas station, and some restaurants. I cannot speak for the restaurants, but we have used the Dollar General for supplies that did not make the trip. Located at the junction of Hwy 64 and Hwy 64B, just outside of the Pittsburgh side of the park, you will find an old building directly across from White’s Marine Center that is selling camp wood. The person that sells the wood will be out there sometimes, but if they are not, there is drop box mounted to one of the poles to leave money in. I was able to purchase a wheelbarrow load for $8.00, which is a much better deal than the small bundle they sell in the park for $5.00.

Pomme de Terre State Park has become a family favorite campground. We will be making a voyage here every year to continue exploring.

Great Owners run the well stocked store and see to your needs. Camping cabins for rent. Great shower house. Loved this place we will be back soon. Definitely a 12 out of 10!

RANGER REVIEW: I had the opportunity to review the GCI Slim Fold Cook Station. Wow what a great addition! Totally loved it. Spacious room on top. Found it to be pretty stable. Sever hooks for hanging items for quick access. Made from sturdy material. Set up and take down super easy. We used iron grill with it and found it to be a match. Also used as a buffet for feeding larger number. Very versatile . Definite 10

Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area

Nice military campground on the Lake of the Ozarks

The Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area (LORA) is a great destination for camping, boating, swimming, water skiing, fishing and other outdoor activities. The lake is one of the Nation's largest man-made lakes, providing you with over 1150 miles of shoreline to enjoy. LORA welcomes Active Duty Military, Retired Military, members of the National Guard and Reserves, DoD employees with ID cards, family members and Fort Leonard Wood contract employees.  Plenty to do and see here.  Boat rentals, hiking, and others mentioned above.  The LORA Country Store carries ice, beverages, firewood and a small selection of food including snacks, milk, eggs and bread. The store also carries the basic necessities needed for camping and fishing, including fishing licenses.  Can rent a tent site, camper site with full or partial hook ups, cabins 1-3 bedroom, etc.  The marina has boat and jet-ski rentals (pontoons, wave runners, jet ski's, ski boats, fishing boats, pontoons, etc.) that are much more reasonable then other rental places in the area. Area is staffed by on-duty MP's out of Fort Leonard Wood.

    B Berry Farms & Co.

    Quiet and Cozy Campground

My girlfriend and I stayed here during our road-trip through MO. The owners Brandon and Theresa were very accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed. They gave us a tour of the farm when we arrived and let us pick out which camp site we wanted. The camp site had everything we needed including a fire pit, grill, picnic table, water spout and bath room nearby. We enjoyed picking black berries right next to our campsite to have with breakfast in the morning. I highly recommend staying here with your family or significant other!

Guide to Lebanon

Bennett Spring State Park offers a variety of cabin accommodations within 15 miles of Lebanon, Missouri. Most cabin units are available year-round, with winter camping options that include heated facilities. Water temperatures in the spring-fed streams remain a consistent 57°F throughout the year, providing reliable trout fishing conditions even during colder months.

What to do

Fishing access points: At Bennett Spring State Park Campground, multiple stream access points accommodate different skill levels. "One aspect of this park that is so appealing is the historical character that came from the Civilian Conservation Corps improvements made back in the 1930's. They built a dam, arched bridge, cabins and shelters, dining lodge, roads, and trails," notes Nancy W.

Hiking trail options: Trail systems vary from easy to challenging terrain with multiple length options. "The park has over twenty miles of hiking trails meandering through its 3,216 acres. Trails range from a leisurely walk along the stream to that of rigorous mountain trails that reward hikers with great picturesque views of the Ozark Mountains," according to a visitor.

Winter activities: Off-season visits offer quieter experiences with fewer crowds. "We stayed in campground one because it is the only one open during the off season. We were surprised when we found that there was Wi-Fi available for free at the campground," shares Nathan P.

What campers like

River access points: Mountain Creek Campground offers direct water entry with shade structures. "There is a great little 'beach' spot along the river so you can play in the water, with umbrellas already put in on the banks for shade," mentions Dasha D.

Cabin privacy options: Cabin layouts and placement vary significantly between properties. "This time wife and I took our small camper just to get away for the weekend. We stayed in campground one because it is the only one open during the off season," reports a winter visitor to Bennett Spring.

Camp stores: Several campgrounds maintain well-stocked stores with essentials beyond basic supplies. "The camp store is amazing. They have a full menu including pizza for those days that you're too tired to cook," notes Jon L. after staying at Hidden Valley Outfitters.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Peak fishing season cabins book 3-6 months in advance, especially for weekend stays. "Reserve early as it fills up fast!" advises Collette about Bennett Spring State Park.

Cabin classification differences: "Cabin" definitions vary widely between properties. "We rented a cabin on line but when get there no cabin, photos did not Mach add," reports Eric S. about one property. Always call to confirm specific amenities before booking.

Bathroom access: Many cabin areas have limited bathroom facilities. "One negative is we only found one toilet for the entire campground. It wasn't a problem at this time because there was hardly anybody there, but I imagine if you wanted to use the toilet during the regular season you would find yourself with a line," notes one visitor.

Seasonal infrastructure: Froggys River Resort and other seasonal properties may have limited facilities during shoulder seasons. "Depending on the time of year, the river can be quite low, so be sure to check the forecast before planning a stay," advises James A.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly water features: B Berry Farms & Co. offers unique outdoor recreation beyond water activities. "This place has everything from axe throwing to free coffee and the property is engineered and planned very nicely," shares Joshua P.

Multi-age activities: Look for campgrounds with diverse recreation options. "Great place to take the family. The roads are all paved so it made biking for our kids easy and enjoyable. The campsite was spacious and shaded. The kids loved playing in the creek and hiking the trails," writes Amanda R.

Family cabin conveniences: Many properties offer child-friendly cabin layouts. "We stayed in the quaint little bunkhouse with an air conditioner and all the amenities that we needed - a little frig, toaster oven, microwave, sink, coffee maker with pods, storage the we could use for our things we brought and the bunk beds that held 5 of us," notes Hannah B.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Riverfront Campground and Canoe, RV sites have varying privacy levels. "Level concrete pads on most sites. The sites are fairly large so you're not on top of your neighbor," notes Ken K.

Seasonal availability: Winter RV camping options include limited sites with reliable hookups. "We came to camp, fish, and hike but there is also canoeing, floating, a nature center and museum, trout hatchery, dining facilities, a church, Olympic-size swimming pool, and much more," shares one year-round visitor.

Hookup variations: Electrical service ranges from 20-50 amp across properties. "We stayed for the weekend. Clean. Comfy. Fishing. Couldn't get any better," comments Katie R. about the basic amenities that enhance cabin camping near Lebanon.
