Union Bay-Porcupine Mountains State Park is home to a seasonal campground that is available to visit from mid May to mid October. With a limited window of time, it’s well worth planning your trip in advance, as peak season can bring a gaggle of campers and tourists, making priority campsites difficult to find. The initial weeks of August are almost always packed, thanks to kids and college-students trying to camp before school starts again. Subsequently, if you want smaller crowds but still want to enjoy the sun, try to reserve a spot during the latter end of August. This is also when the Porcupine Mountains Music Festival happens, giving you a great event to check out. Regardless of your needs, during camping season you can call the campground where staff will provide details on sites that you might not see at the Reservations Center or online. If you can’t find what you’re looking for online, give them a call! If you happen to forget a thing or two, there’s the Porcupine Mountain Outpost store right outside the entrance to the campground. It's open from May through mid October. There you can find souvenirs, camping supplies, and even clothing. You might find the occasional pre-made sandwich, but besides soft drinks and milk, there are no real groceries here. You’ll have to travel all the way out to Ontonagon (25 miles away) for groceries. That said, you can make the trip worth if you if you grab a bite to eat at Syl’s, a legendary diner famous for its repertoire of comfort food classics. The campground itself is moderately sized, with 99 sites available for RVs and tents. One of the draws to the campground is that all sites have at least 30 amp electric hookups available. One of the most common complaints here is due to the limited amount of pull-through sites, with many options too small to accommodate larger vehicles. Porcupine Mountains State Park is uniquely known for its hybrid existence between contemporary and antiquated beauty. The park is extremely modern, thanks to the updated facilities and well maintained grounds. However, it skirts the line with a true wilderness feel, owing to the rustic touches, and charming yurt cabins, available for overnight accommodations as well. Whatever your intent to visit, there’s no mistaking the quant appeal of this Michigan state park.

      North Trout Lake Campground

      Nice State Campground

You get a relatively flat site, fire ring, a picnic table, hand pump for water and vault toilets along with a beautiful clear water lake. There's a boat launch and firewood for sale. Reservations need to be made and paid online even if your fcfs. Cell phone and data are okay. There is tire noise from Highway M.

Very few folks around in September!

Honeymooned here in 1975. The location on the lake is beautiful. We camped here many times over the years. In tents, VW campers, trailers until about 20 years ago. Got a Sprinter RV this year and we're camped here now.

      Lake Gogebic State Park

Nice Spot, easy on and off highway.

We stayed here the 2nd week of October. They were actually turning the water off for the year when we left. We had the park mostly to ourselves. They water access is nice and it is right off a main highway, although it was not too noisy. There are some state park hiking trails access from campground, also. Facilities were pretty standard state park fair.  Sites seem to have plenty of room.

      Been coming here for years…

We love the area. Very nice people, well run campground. Staying on Lake Superior is almost always beautiful. Sunsets are amazing!! The sites are generous and partially wooded. Drawbacks, no laundry facilities, even in town. Stores, restaurants and gas stations nearby but expensive. (Though there is a dollar store) They do not take reservations, so it’s a gamble to just show up. You really have to be there, in person by 7AM to wait in line to get a site.

      Overall, great place to stay!!

Porcupine Mountains-White Pine Rustic Outpost Camp

      Great Rustic Campground

Awesome little campground on the south side of the Porcupines. It’s in a convenient location to the hiking around the park. The sites are large, the campground is small (and quiet) and there’s even a creek that runs along the west side of the campground. We stayed in site 1. If you do cook using the fire pit grates, they do not have them here in the fire pits at this campground. You need to reserve sites and check in at the visitor center before you head to the site. I’d highly recommend this place to anybody in a tent especially!

      Very quiet and relaxing

We tented on lot 7 during the second week of June. It was very quiet. I was lucky to find this gem and you will only have spotty phone service at best. My dog had more fun than I did and we did a lot of hiking.

      Black River Harbor Campground

      Very Nice!

This is one of the nicest USFS campgrounds we’ve stayed in. It’s freshly paved, including each camp spot’s parking area, so they’re relatively flat. It’s more open and clean and cared for than most USFS campgrounds we’ve stayed in.

It’s $16/night, self pay at the iron ranger. No host, no dump station, no recycling. There’s water (closed when we were there though), a trash bin, and vault toilets.

There’s a nice walk near site 18 to a scenic overlook of the lake, and if you keep going past the overlook there are stairs that take you down to the boat ramp, beach, day use area, trail to the falls, etc. Really nice lush beautiful green trail.

A few sites have a “view” of the lake, meaning you can see the water through the trees. #18 has the best view of the water. No cell service at the campground but Verizon and ATT had a very weak sporadic signal from our site (#20). This signal went away everywhere else in the campground though.

      Flies and mosquitoes were annoying!

      Little Girl's Point County Park

      Busy but beautiful

Gorgeous views, busy, but enough space between wooded sites for a touch of privacy.

I spend all day every day at the lake, which has lovely beach walks for about a mile total of available shore.

I found it hard to locate any cell service (T-Mobile).

      Bond Falls Campground

      Great sites and free!

Beautiful sites, some very private and right on the lake. Boat launch nearby. Sites are spacious and privacy depends in the site. Some are isolated, others are mean to camp with friends. All have fire pit and table. First come, first served. We got there on a Thursday and lots of sites, but was full by the weekend. You have to drive around and pick an open site and caretaker comes around about 11am to check you in. Pit toilets, some ADA accessible.

      Lac Vieux Desert

      Excellent Campground

Basic Forest Service campground, with picnic table, fire pit, but also a paved pad (nice because it poured two of our ten nights). Very quiet and not very busy this time of year. Sites are very private and well-spaced. Pit toilets were extremely well maintained and clean. $15 per night. One bar T-mobile enough for calls but no data.

We had site 6. It was large enough for our 17 foot camper. From this campsite it’s about a 15 minute drive to Lake Superior beach, camp store, water, and presque isle. Beautiful hikes all around the park. Could hike for days and have gorgeous views. Pit toilet available.

      Great Roadside Stopover

Only an overnighter, but it's excellent for those nights when you just had enough driving. Nice playground for the kids if needed, restaurant only about a tenth of a mile walk. Boat ramp. We pulled in on a Wednesday around 6pm, only 5 of the 15 spots were taken. Weekends might be different

It's on our list now for the UP.

      Peace By The River

This campground was an unexpected awesome surprise! After spending a busy week coming across the UP, and enjoying the "tourist sites" and experiencing the crowded, extremely busy State Park Campgrounds, we found this wonderfully, quiet, absolutely beautiful campground. Away from crowds, away from traffic, away from the hustle bustle of cities ... we found our Peace! Plus it's free!!! Dispersed camping, just a fire ring and a picnic table, plus the view and the sounds of the river as it passes by us just a few feet away. What more could we ask?

      Lake Gogebic State Park

      Very unfriendly and disrespectful

07/02 We pulled up to the office with our RV and a trailer attached with a sxs on.  The girl was nice gave me a map with directions to our campsite and sent us on our way.  At our campsite we disconnected the trailer took off the sxs and set up camp.  We then decided to take a ride because we had forgotten a few things and we were meeting up with my son for the 4th so we thought we would look for trails.  We stopped at the office to see if they had trail maps, when I walked in the girl (Chelsey) slammed the window shut and told me she hated those things. I asked if she had a trail map and all she said was "we have no trails around here." Chelsey needs to take a class in customer service she was very rude.  As we left we saw several other sxs going down the road so we knew there were tails.  We stopped at the Gogebic Lodge and saw they were serving a lobster boil so we decided to go back to get money from the camper as we pulled in there was the camp ranger waiting for us and signaled for us to pull over.  He then told us that sxs were not permitted in State parks.  I told him we go camping in our local state park all the time and they are all over the campground.  His name was Eli and took the time to talk to us and explain and did a great job but that meant we had no means of transportation at all.  I also asked why when we registered or stopped for a trail map were we not told of that rule, he couldn't answer that but agreed we should have been told.  He also stated it was on the website.  Well it is on the state website we booked on the Gogebic State park website.  I feel if state parks are going to have different rules it should be stated on the website you book your stay.  He also said we could park our sxs out by the road and walk to use it but we are both handicapped and we couldn't walk that far.  We felt like prisoners at our campsite we couldn't go and get wood for  a fire or the extra supplies at the store down the road.  Finally on the morning of the 4th i decided I could maybe walk to the office and carry 1 bundle of wood so we could have a fire on the 4th. Our original plan was to meet my son and his family and go to all the different 4th events in the area but we could no longer do that.  When I got to the office the girl there took my money and told me where to grab the wood, she then asked if I was walking and I explained the situation, and she said oh your the one.  But offered to drive the bundle of wood to our site which I thought was very kind.  When I got back to our site we decided to call and see if she could bring a couple more bundles.  I called she asked if I could hold, she put the phone down and I could hear her switching sites for someone then she asked if they needed wood or ice and they took wood and she told them it was last of the wood.  So when she came back to me she said they were out of wood and I told her I had already paid for my wood and that last bundle should have been mine.  I was told to try the store up the road, and that she would be dropping off my money to me.  The store up the road even if she knew I couldn't.  My experience at this campground was very disappointing.  I felt the they did not communicate with us and when they tried to they were rude.  I will never camp here again in fact I will think twice about camping at any state park again.
