Ontonagon County Park

County-managed camping sits directly on Lake Gogebic, Michigan's largest inland lake, with sites arranged in loops on either side of a central boat launch and playground area. The campground provides full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections for RVs up to 40 feet, plus a dump station and recently updated shower facilities that Chris W. notes "would make a college locker room look weak."

Sites offer adequate space but limited vegetation between neighbors, with scattered tall trees providing some shade. Campers can access cell service at various points around the lake, and the facility includes WiFi connectivity. The location puts visitors a few miles closer to the Porcupine Mountains than nearby Lake Gogebic State Park Campground, with easy access to town for supplies. A swimming beach accommodates families, while the lake supports walleye fishing.

The campground operates from May through September with an on-site manager who has updated picnic tables, gravel surfaces, docks, and signage in recent years. Firewood sales are available at the entrance. Early summer brings black flies, though they typically subside by July. Both drive-in and walk-in sites are available, with reservations accepted and pets welcome.

This county park works well for RV campers prioritizing lake access and full hookups over privacy, particularly those planning fishing trips or exploring the western Upper Peninsula.

Guests commonly noted excellent lake access and comprehensive facilities including full hookups and a new shower house. Recent management improvements have addressed earlier maintenance concerns, though site privacy remains limited.

On a lake and near the Porcupine Mountains

Finding myself with a squealing front wheel on a holiday weekend was trouble. Luckily a local paused his celebration preparations and helped me fix the problem. We got to talking and he suggested this campground. It is similar to the state park and just down the road. He also said,“it’ll save you a few bucks too.”

We stopped by to check it out and found it was very similar to the state park. The boat launch and playground are in the middle as you drive in. Campsite loops are on each side. These sites are further from the water but nicely sized. Firewood is for sale right by the entrance. There are a few tall trees but not much vegetation between sites. We prefer more separation so this wasn’t as appealing.

We did like that this was a few miles closer to the Porcupine Mountains (hiking and Lake Superior visits) and also to town. It was also nice to get cell service at various points around the lake.

Good WiFi

Nice stop to get good WiFi. Otherwise, it’s not a very rustic camping experience. Great if you’re into that kind of RV park.

Updated and all amenities

For the last 3 years the county has hired a new manager who lives on site. The county put in a new shower house that would make a college locker room look weak. All hookups available, and sewer service is an added perk. The new manager has updated all picnic tables, gravel, docks, signs, and even sells firewood. Set on the biggest inland lake in the U.P., with the best walleye fishing in the Midwest. Swimming beach for the kids, and nearby towns for stocking up. The only negative are the bugs. Early summer can bring black flies , but usually die down by July.

Only stay if Ontonagon County Park is all that's left

Ontonagon County Park is right on Lake Gogebic. If that is all you read you might book a site. This place doesn't look like it has been updated in years. It is run down.

The positive is that it is right on the lake and has a boat ramp. So if you want to boat and can't find another place to camp on the lake, this will work for you. Otherwise I would head down the road a couple of more miles and stay at Lake Gogebic State Park or find a private campground on the lake.
