Munising-Pictured Rocks KOA accommodates pets across its tent sites, RV spaces, and cabin rentals within a wooded setting near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The campground maintains standard pet policies requiring dogs to be leashed at all times while on campground property. Several campsites provide direct access to hiking trails suitable for daily dog walks. Bathroom facilities remain accessible for campers with pets throughout their stay, though some reviews note the bathrooms could use additional maintenance. Sites near the pool area can be particularly noisy during peak season, making them less suitable for campers with noise-sensitive pets.

Bay Furnace Campground's pet-friendly sites operate seasonally from mid-May through September, offering both tent and RV camping options with pets permitted. The campground's proximity to Lake Superior provides excellent opportunities for dogs that enjoy swimming, though pet owners should monitor for changing water conditions. Pet waste stations are limited, so campers should bring supplies to clean up after their animals. Nearby trails within Hiawatha National Forest accommodate leashed dogs year-round, with the cooler summer temperatures making this an ideal destination for heat-sensitive breeds. Superior hiking trails connecting to the campground provide excellent exercise opportunities for active dogs, though pet owners should be prepared for encounters with local wildlife including deer, squirrels and occasional bears.

      Woodland Park Campground

      Perfect place on lake superior

This was our first campground experience with our RV. Not being sure what to expect but we really enjoyed our stay. We had a back in site, very close to the bathhouse which was nice and clean. Cleaned daily &closed for cleaning between 9-10am. Our site was right across from Lake Superior with beautiful sunset and sunrise views. There was a dog park for dogs to enjoy. Location is in the town of Grand Marais so you are a 10 minute walk into town for stores & dining. Very quiet campground, perfect for relaxing. Long staircase leading down to the beach. We will definitely be back.

Indian Lake State Park South Campground — Indian Lake State Park

      Great lakeside camping

This is a great lakeside campsite just outside of Manistique. There is a main bathroom area with showers. Good shallow water to swim (and watch the beautiful sunset) but a little difficult to fish. Staff is friendly. They even do weekly events such as "Traveling Trivia" for kids. Pet friendly too!

Hurricane River Campground — Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

      Michigander must

One of my favorite places to rustic camp! Sites are first come first serve, planning arrival for certain days and times is required so you can land a site. Hiking is the best part of pictured rocks, bring the right shoes and lots of big spray so you can enjoy Mother Nature’s beauty. No pets are allowed which is a bummer but understandable. I’ve seen bear while driving through the park both times I’ve camped in pictured rocks, so they’re definitely around!

      Little Bay De Noc

      Beautiful destination

Little Bay De Noc, Lake Michigan access with a pier. Only a few campsites, but includes group fire pit, playground and proximity to Pictured Rocks, 1 hour. Lots of hiking and great motorized non-motorized off-road trails.

      Northland Outfitters

Isolated, but not quiet. Disconnected. Fun and friendly.

Stayed here for 4 nights early July 2020. Social distancing had some sinks and urinals turned off. Seemed super clean. 4-6 tent only spots are in pretty good shade. All sites had at least water and electricity. Swingset and covered sandbox for kids. Volleyball net. I saw dogs and cats; we brought 1 dog.

Cell coverage (AT&T for my family, Verizon for my friends) was pretty hit or miss at 0-2 bars at any given time. I could sometimes stream audio for an hour or two. Other times, it wouldn't do anything. Wifi was available, but it wasn't any more reliable than cell service down in the tent area. Service wasn't normal until hitting either of the east-west roads at the north and south sides of the UP that run along Superior and Michigan, ~8-10 miles north or south of the campground. We like limited to no signal, but realize some count on it, so try to always include it in reviews.

Campground was pretty busy and the internal noise levels were fine, but you could hear vehicles (possibly cars as well as ATVs) racing off grounds in the night. I'm a very deep sleeper, so this didn't bother me, but I did hear it when I was awake for my nightly jaunt to the potty. My buddy mentioned it kept him awake for a while.

Went tubing with a launch from the grounds and got picked up by staff about half to 3/4s of a mile down river. My guests paid, so not sure how much, but perfectly nice little break from the heat for an hour.

~20-5 minutes to closest spots to hit the beach, both of which were about 10 degrees cooler than the campground.

      Portage Bay State Forest Campground

Great Lake sites! A great destination for relaxation!

Portage Bay State Forest Campground sits on a little peninsula just outside the Shingleton State Forest Area south of HWY 2 in the Michigan Upper Peninsula. This campground is not hard to find but it is a drive away from the main road.  As you head further into the forest and closer to the campground the road narrows.  There is still  room to drive your RV to the campground but be cautious as some traffic can be coming from the opposite direction so pay attention and be courteous to other drivers.

As you enter the campground you will enter from the South entering on the West end of the looping around to the East shore where the 23 available campsites sit.  All sites sit on the shore but some are closer to the shore than others and access to Lake Michigan is more accessible on some sites compared to others. Some sit directly on the lake and some have hills blocking the view, but you can set your tent up on the hill for a spectacular view. Having the hill on your site does help cut down on the cool breeze that can come off the lake. You can tent or RV on these sites and the sites are rather large offering you a variety of camp set up!

Pit toilets are the only toilets available.  There are a couple walking trails, nothing difficult or long but they offer beautiful scenery and gorgeous walks in the woods and to the lake.

This is a rustic campground and available by walk-in or drive-in only.  People that camp here like to keep things quiet!  I am not saying that it is not kid friendly but lacking amenities and being a good distance from any town you might want to reconsider if you have young ones.  There are some small towns on the peninsula to pick up some necessities but the nearest town of any size is almost an hour away in Manistique.

Pictured Rocks RV Park and Campground

      Excellent new campground

Open, level gravel sites and some concrete pads scattered throughout this pretty new campground. A few baby trees in the open meadow are trying to get started, but other than those there is no shade. We stayed in a full hook up 50 amp site, and experienced no power issues despite 2 days of freakishly high winds and scorching heat in the 90s. This is an immaculately clean and well run campground. Wi fi is ok for email and phone scrolling social media. The only reason we didn't give 5 stars is due to construction in the campground with dump trucks and beep beep beep of machinery backing up every day. Once they are finished and the shade trees grow this will be a premier campground in a beautiful area. Pets allowed on leash. Trash receptacles convenient to each area of the campground. Bath house with coin laundry machines.

      Marquette Tourist Park Campground

      Endless bike trails

Stayed on our drive from Mackinac to see the pictured rocks lake shore. The campground is surrounded by 18 miles of trails. No camp store, but a convenience store is a quarter mile away. Northern Michigan university is at the door step as well. Lake superior is 1 mile away. We biked there and fished at the campground beach. Lots of Brook trout there.

      Au Train Lake Campground

      Perfect Getaway

We reserved our site online. Having never been before we didnt really know what to expect. It was nothing less than perfect. Tucked away in a silent wooded area. Paved roads all the way in. 15 minutes from Munising. Was a perfect hideaway for us driving from SW michigan over memorial day weekend. Birdwatching trails for days and 4x4 trails surround.

    Guide to Wetmore

The Wetmore area offers camping access to both Hiawatha National Forest and the shores of Lake Superior. With an average summer temperature of 75°F and winter lows frequently below 10°F, the region has a distinct camping season from May through October. Most campgrounds sit at elevations between 600-800 feet above sea level, providing good drainage during summer thunderstorms common to the area.

    What to do

Hiking Bruno's Run: Pete's Lake Campground connects to this 9-mile trail traversing woods and small ponds. "Running through the campground is the Bruno's Run Trail – a 9-mile trail traversing the woods and around small ponds. This was a great trail except for some pesky bugs that started annoying us as we heated up," notes Nancy W. from Pete's Lake Campground.

Kayaking Au Train River: Pack water shoes and prepare for varying water levels when exploring this waterway. "We kayaked Au Train River and stood in the Au Train falls. The bird watch site at camp was amazing as well. Don't skip out on Pictured Rocks either," shares Chelsea & Wes J. from Au Train Lake Campground.

Lake swimming: Island Lake provides a warmer swimming alternative to Lake Superior. "The lake is beautiful and warmer than Lake Superior. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms," advises Raquel M. from Island Lake Campground, who spent the entire season as a host.

    What campers like

Lake access: At Island Lake, campsites include private trails to the water. "The sites 9-11 are distanced from the others and that's where I stayed. Upsides: no one else was there during our weekend stay, great view of the lake, and just a minute away walking distance from boat access to the lake," reports Alexis R.

Site privacy: Many campgrounds in the Wetmore area feature well-spaced sites. "This campground is all about what site you can get. I reserved a full hookup/waterfront site and it was amazing. All we had to do was step out our door to be looking at the water," says Deb M. from Munising Tourist Park Campground.

Clean facilities: Vault toilets at dog friendly campgrounds near Wetmore receive regular maintenance. "The vault toilets were very clean and well maintained. No showers at this park but we had our own with us. Our campsite was very clean when we arrived to setup camp and the hosts make sure each site looks fabulous before new individuals arrive," notes Chelsea & Wes J. about their stay.

    What you should know

Bug preparation: The Wetmore region has significant mosquito and black fly seasons. "May/June quiet with only the sounds of eagles, bull frogs, mosquitoes, and black flies. Bring your bug spray and nets," warns Raquel M., who spent an entire season hosting at Au Train Lake.

Limited cell service: Most campgrounds have spotty or no connectivity. "No service, no water/showers, bring your own toilet paper of course, and lots of bug spray, 15 minute drive to Munising!" advises Alexis R. about Island Lake's remote conditions.

Water availability varies: Check if your campground has potable water before arriving. "We thought there would be water available but there is none. Vault toilet near 9-11 doesn't have a roof so it was wet after some rain," shares Alexis R. about Island Lake.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach options: Consider campgrounds with designated swimming areas for kids. "There is a beach and boat launch near. We went there to chase the northern lights but missed it by a night. We kayaked Au Train River and stood in the Au Train falls," reports Chelsea & Wes J. about their family stay.

Educational opportunities: Otter Lake Campground & Lodge offers a variety of activities for children. "There are a variety of activities available within the campground to keep kids and adults busy. This includes paddle boat, kayak, and canoe rentals, a basketball court, a small playground, a volleyball court, and swimming," explains Amie L.

Wildlife viewing: Pet-friendly sites often attract local wildlife for kids to observe. "Lots of chipmunks in camp that were super cute. Sites aren't too close to one another so you feel separate but together," says Chelsea & Wes J., highlighting the natural entertainment available for families with children and pets.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection importance: At Pictured Rocks RV Park and Campground, location within the park matters significantly. "Open, level gravel sites and some concrete pads scattered throughout this pretty new campground. A few baby trees in the open meadow are trying to get started, but other than those there is no shade," advises Jennifer B.

Generator policies: RV campers should check generator rules, as some campgrounds restrict usage. "Watch out for jerky neighbors with noisy generators. Ugh. You can buy $80,000 worth of camper but get a generator from a discount store? Fortunately, it's quiet time at 10:00pm," notes Kevin about one campground experience.

Off-season advantages: For RVers seeking pet-friendly campsites with more space, consider visiting during September. "We are winging our way around, getting to know Michigan for future trips so no reservations. This was one of the sites we explored (among many) and found it to be charming," shares Kevin about exploring less crowded dog-friendly camping options near Wetmore in the shoulder season.
