Best Campgrounds near New Haven, MI

State parks and county campgrounds surround New Haven, Michigan, creating a diverse camping landscape within an hour's drive. Algonac State Park Campground, located along the St. Clair River about 20 miles east, offers year-round camping with views of passing freighters and access to water activities. Lakeport State Park Campground, situated on Lake Huron's shoreline approximately 30 miles northeast, provides beach access and opportunities for rock collecting, particularly Petoskey stones. The region includes both heavily wooded sites at Holly Recreation Area and McGinnis Lake Modern Campground as well as more developed facilities at Port Huron KOA and Addison Oaks County Park, which accommodate everything from tent camping to RVs and cabin rentals.

Reservations are essential during peak season from late May through September, with many campgrounds booking up to six months in advance. As one camper noted, "My suggestion is to book six months in advance because it is extremely hard to get into this campground on the weekends." Weather conditions vary significantly by season, with humid summers and potentially harsh winters limiting year-round camping options. Cell service ranges from strong at KOA locations to minimal at more remote sites. Campground roads and facilities receive mixed reviews, with some visitors reporting concerns about maintenance. "We could not believe the disrepair of the campground roads. Sooo many ruts that I was deeply concerned for the undercarriage of both my truck and camper," reported one Algonac State Park visitor.

Waterfront access represents a significant draw for campers in the region, with Lake Huron and the St. Clair River offering distinctive experiences. Visitors frequently mention watching freighter traffic as a highlight at Algonac State Park. "This place has some amazing views along the St. Clair River. The freighter traffic did not disappoint," noted one reviewer. Family-friendly amenities vary widely between locations, with county parks like Groveland Oaks offering extensive recreational facilities including "swimming, water slide, arcade, boat rentals, mini golf, biking trails and fishing." Site privacy differs significantly between campgrounds and even within sections of the same park. Campers seeking quieter experiences often recommend specific areas, such as the south section at Lakeport State Park, which offers "more of a woodsy outdoor feel" compared to the more crowded north section.

Dancing Fire Glamping and RV Resort

Suited for RVs - Very Kind Host

Right off the highway. Clean. $69/night for a pad with power. We have a pop up tent and a utility trailer. Nice pool. Showers and sitewide wifi. Would have rated a 5 but the price seems high for a tent.

    Proud Lake Recreation Area

    Amazing

You need to know that this place is so so clean! The grounds, the sites, the bathrooms and the showers are all impeccable. It is true we were there in the middle of the week, but I’ve stayed at plenty of places during the week where things have been less than desirable. Everyone was most pleasant and helpful and the view of the lake was beautiful. If the campground had been full we probably would not have been able to see the lake from our site.

McGinnis Lake Modern Campground — Holly Recreation Area

    In the woods

Nice campground. Paved sites. Some are pretty secluded. Downside is that the campground and stuff to do, are far apart. Bring a bike or drive. Beach is nice. Has a water park on the lake.

    Port Huron KOA

    Lots of amenities

Plenty of friendly staff. The site offers a lot of activities including pools, put put golf and play areas for the kids. The grounds are well kept. It’s very busy. Golf carts are a bit of a pain. Lots of private ones but also rentals and they’re everywhere. WiFi is slow but stable. You probably won’t be able to watch Netflix. AT&T service is terrible. Our friends have T-Mobile and it is very fast for them.

    Great for all ages!

Lots of beach area and water to fish or swim. Activities almost every night. Paddle boats, mini golf, golf, and more. Pull behind sites were easy to access. Staff are very helpful and responsive. There is a dump station on site.

    Oakland County Addison Oaks

    County Campground

Nice park, family friendly, very clean and maintained. Bike and boat rental, children’s playground and activities. Hiking and biking trails. RC airport. When in this area this its the place to stay. If I lived in this area it would be a destination. Price is right!

    Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

    Clean & convenient

Had a nice stay here. The campground was full but quiet. The bathrooms and showers were nice and clean with hot water. Site 71 wasn’t the most private but still nice. The spots are all pretty private due to trees and vegetation. Nice fire pit. Water hookup and dump on site.

    Seven Lakes State Park Campground

    Family friendly

The campground has a private lake that’s good for swimming and fishing. The sites are decently sized with most being easily gotten into with an RV. Plenty of hiking/biking trails easily accessed from the campground. Only 2 downsides to this campground are the showers (not very clean and very small), and it’s very busy.

    Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area

    Okay

Stayed here the first night of July 4th weekend. Full campground and sites are close together and crowded. With the large camping trailers and 2-3 vehicles per site, it felt claustrophobic. A good number of sites are not level. Bathrooms were well maintained and people were courteous. I would not stay here again because it felt packed with people.
