These locations provide varying levels of amenities for tent campers seeking outdoor experiences in Michigan's eastern thumb region.

Tent sites at P.L. Graham Park are first-come, first-served and cost approximately $15 per night. The campground features basic facilities including pit toilets, trash receptacles, and access to drinking water. Sites are situated on natural ground with minimal development, offering an authentic backcountry tent camping experience despite being only a mile from town. Campers must purchase firewood on-site as outside wood is prohibited to prevent the spread of invasive species. The park has a caretaker who maintains the grounds and sells bundles of wood.

The primitive tent camping experience at P.L. Graham Park provides access to the Black River for fishing and paddling opportunities. Sites are spaced with ample room between them, some nestled in the woods while others are in a more open area near the water. The natural setting attracts wildlife and offers a peaceful retreat for tent campers. There are limited hiking trails within the park itself, but the surrounding area offers additional outdoor recreation options. A recent review from The Dyrt noted: "We showed up fresh off the road from AZ starting a new life here in the great state of Michigan. Two gentlemen met us right at the entrance... There is a Porta potty available. Trash cans are located throughout the park."

    Ridgewood Campground

    An Quick Camping Escape

We were warmly greeted by the attendee and the camp host. Firewood, snacks, camp essentials, and ice available on site. Nice touch having firewood delivered to our site. The gentleman could not have been kinder and offered assistance with us setting up. The site was a larger site (#12) tucked nicely away in a corner.

Picnic Table and Nice Fire Ring onsite. Port-a-potty, dumpster near site.

Fair warning, the staff aren’t the only ones ready to greet you! Bugs, Mosquitoes, bees, and even raccoons (if food left out - which we did not). We have been to sites before that must have sprayed for pests because we have never experienced the amount of mosquitoes we did here. Thankfully we had Off Area Camp Spray, our Thermacell, and citronella burning and it helped dramatically reduce the pests.

The noise level was very “citified.” Traffic could be heard throughout the evening and early morning. That’s what we get for camping so close to civilization. Also, beware of Poison Oak and Ivy! The entire site was bordered with it.

Lastly, make sure that if you car camp or SUV Camp, you let them know. They have a policy of making you park your car/SUV in the lot after setting up your tent (if tent camping).

Ortonville Equestrian Campground — Ortonville Recreation Area

    2 Great Lakes & A Horse Camp

The campground here is actually a quite popular equestrian campground. There is a campground and a staging area. Rustic vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings. The campground itself isn’t really much to write home about (unless you have horses that is). The lakes and launches are however very nice and there are some great trail systems through the area.

    Algonac State Park Campground

    Escape from Detroit

Lots of different landscapes to explore. Great wildlife and views of the river. We were only here in winter when it was empty, I imagine it’d be pretty busy in summer. No showers but vault toilets and some powered sites. There are two camp site areas here, and one section is just for tents (but that one’s not on the river, so you have some tradeoffs). We were disappointed by all the shooting noises from the range.

    Lakeport State Park Campground

    Lakeport family fun

Lakeport state park, is it fun? Is there things to do? How’s the beach? We’ll I tell ya. This park is kept super clean! The bathrooms were kept up well and the showers were squeaky clean with warm water running the whole shower. The beach was rocky so don’t forget to pack some water shoes but the rocky beach comes with finding cool rocks to either paint or just collect! (We left with a whole cooler filled) There is trails to ride your bike around and two playgrounds to keep the kids busy. It was my first camp at a state park and I was highly impressed. So if you’re in the port Huron area or only a couple hours away and want a nice relaxing get away in some good ole out doors but have electricity & bathrooms then I would highly recommend lakeport!

    Lakeport State Park Campground

    State Park Near Port Huron

This was one of my least favorite state parks. Like many Michigan State Parks, the facilities are old and the campgrounds are overcrowded in the summer with local campers. We stay here one night on the way Ontario. The border crossing at Sarnia is about 20 miles south of the campsite. The sites are on top of each other with no privacy. The beach on the east side of the camp borders Lake Huron. It’s not much to look at with limited views and just a thin rocky shoreline. The beach is just a few hundred yards from the camp through a line of trees. The restroom facilities were outdated and in need of repair. This may be ok for a one night stop but would not recommend beyond a short stay.

    Lakeport State Park Campground

    Rock Pickers unite!!!

Lakeport is one of the hidden gems in Michigan. We all have heard that you can find Petoskey Stones in Northern Michigan, well.... look no further!!!!! I have found the most beautiful Petoskey Stones at Lakeport. I have also found a large pudding stone. My husband brings his chair down to the water and I walk the short for hours and hours looking for rocks. The campground itself is awesome as well. There are two parts to the campground. We like to reserve our site at the North side of the campground as it is more wooded than the southern section. The sites are much larger in the north side and closer to the areas where rocks can be found! This campground is amazing. My suggestion is to book six months in advance because it is extremely hard to get into this campground on the weekends.
