What to Do
Fossil hunting excursions: Calvert Cliffs State Park draws geology enthusiasts with its beach where ancient marine fossils can be discovered. "Such an amazing experience and brings right into the eyes of child with both adult and children searching for shark teeth. Not only is searching for shark teeth a blast, but, the views are beautiful," notes Sarah F.
Kayaking local waterways: From Endeavor Point, paddlers can explore the river and surrounding marshlands. One visitor described their experience: "After breakfast, we kayaked the river and creek through beautiful marshlands where we saw caterpillars walk on water, a heron and bald eagles soaring above, turtles, a cove where thousands of tadpoles were amidst metamorphosis scampering through and atop the water."
Hiking forest trails: The woodlands around camping areas provide multiple trail options ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. A camper at Cedarville State Forest commented, "The trails are maintained well. I've never left this park without at least one tick. No camp store. Firewood is available."
What Campers Like
Waterfront camping spots: Breezy Point Beach offers sites directly on the Chesapeake Bay. "The sites are close together. No worse than a typical KOA though. There is additional space behind each site leading onto the beach that houses a table and fire ring. It feels like each site has loads of room out to the beach," reports Scott T.
Clean facilities: Many campers appreciate well-maintained bathhouses and amenities. At Matoaka Beach Cottages, visitors enjoy both tent camping and cabin options. "We tent camped at Matoka Cabins and it was a beautiful Peaceful camping trip! Out spot was very private and you could see the bay and hear the waves," shares Courtney K.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: The natural surroundings provide excellent wildlife spotting possibilities. One visitor to Endeavor Point saw "an otter one night!" while another camper at Cedarville noted seeing "a snake, alligator snapping turtle, and rabbits, before we even reached the gates."
