What to do
Kayaking on Pocomoke River: Pocomoke River State Park Campground offers multiple water trails for paddlers. "We have kayaked north to Snow Hill, Md, south to Milburn Landing, west up Nassawango Creek, and Corkers Creek at the campsite. We have also kayaked out of Byrd Park, in Snow Hill. All these kayak trails are wonderful! Plenty to see, no bugs, no mosquitoes... some biting flies if you go into the lily pad areas."
Free bike rentals: At Sun Outdoors Ocean City Gateway, campers can borrow bikes at no cost. "You can enjoy free mini golf, free pool and waterside, free canoeing, and free billiards. It is about 20 min to ocean city but they have a free bus to take you to ocean."
Island camping experience: For a more secluded option, Trap Pond offers unique island sites. "My sons and I spent four nights on the island site and loved it. We lucked out and had both sites to ourselves which I recommend. I couldn't imagine sharing the secluded site with strangers. We set up our hammocks on the edge of the water."
Winter beach exploration: Assateague Island National Seashore Oceanside Campground provides off-season opportunities with fewer insects. "We always go during the winter or early spring months to avoid the bugs as they are awful during the spring and summer. Do not feed or pet the horses!"
What campers like
Individual family bathrooms: The bathhouses at Trap Pond State Park receive consistent praise for their design. "The bath houses are very clean and were cleaned on a rolling basis, starting at 10 am for the A loop. The shower had immediate hot water, but you only get about 30 seconds of water before you have to push the button again. A little clunky but a good way to save water."
Educational activities: Shad Landing Campground offers programs that engage campers with local wildlife. "The park has programs and we painted a picture of Chuck the Owl (he was our model) which was fun."
Site layout and privacy: The campground design at Pocomoke River State Park creates a comfortable camping experience. "Loop G - Acorn trail is for campers with pets. The camp sites are in the outer loop of the circular road with lots of space between each site. Lots of shade. There are several paths (like spokes on a wheel) that lead to the bathrooms which are in the middle of the loop."
Beach access: Delaware Seashore State Park Campground positions campers near the shoreline. "Ocean was a short 5 minute walk from our campsite - along with a playground and delicious restaurant (that even served vegan food!)!"
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Campgrounds in this region experience significant seasonal changes in crowds and insects. "This place was very nice. Best beer selection I've seen at a campground. Nice little beach! Nice pool, tiki bar and great deli. One issue. The bathrooms were very dirty and not cleaned the 3 days I was there."
Bridge noise: Some campgrounds near major roadways may experience traffic sounds. "It's right next to a bridge - which is beautiful at night - but we didn't hear the traffic as much as I expected. Tent sites were closer to the bridge, though, so I'm not sure how noisy they were."
Winter camping preparations: Temperatures can drop unexpectedly in shoulder seasons. "We only stayed on Assateague for 1 night on our way down the east coast. We camped on the bayside which had a really pretty view of the marsh and large camp sites. No electric hookup or water which is expected for winter camping, we managed without for the night."
Wildlife interactions: Bayside Assateague Campground — Assateague Island National Seashore offers unique wildlife encounters that require proper preparation. "A small herd of them (around 8) decided to hangout in our campsite waiting for their meal. This meant we couldn't get ours. As soon as any food would come into 'nose-shot,' they would start advancing on us. We waited over an hour for them to lose interest."
Tips for camping with families
Free amenities: Many family campgrounds offer inclusive activities. "They have a variety of sporting goods to borrow at the store, horseshoes, basketballs, and whiffle ball sets to name a few. The playgrounds were nice and they also have a small skateboard/BMX ramp area, as well as a very cute dog park with their own playground equipment."
Group site advantages: For larger family gatherings, some campgrounds offer specialized areas. "My group camped here for two nights as part of our trip to Aasateague. The group campsite was huge, complete with plenty of picnic tables, hammock hangs, a fire pit with benches around it, and a charcoal grill with a prep station/garbage hang next to it. deluxe!"
Location benefits: When searching for pet friendly camping near White Plains, Maryland, consider proximity to multiple attractions. "This campground is about 20 minutes to Ocean City boardwalk and about 25 minutes to Assateague Island, where the wild horses roam. Your 8 Miles from Walmart for all your needs."
Playground proximity: Some sites offer convenient access to children's play areas. "This is definitely a place I recommend to friends and family. Highly recommend our site to anyone with littles as you can literally relax at your site while your child plays at the playground!"
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: RV campers should prepare for varying site conditions. "Sites are fairly spacious and have an interesting semi-circle pull through layout so backing in not required. They are not level and have a sandy base so it took a bit of work to finally get the rig level, even with auto-levelers."
Hookup limitations: Several campgrounds offer electrical service without full hookups. "30 amp service available on Acorn Trail and Deer Run. No water or sewer hookups but there is a dump station at park entrance with a water fillup spot."
Size restrictions: Larger rigs may face challenges at certain campgrounds. "RV sites are very tight. Anything over 35' in my opinion will be hard to get into sites."
Winter preparation: Cold-weather camping requires additional planning for RVers. "The winds were nuts and over 50mph. We switched sites to spare our slide side, so caution to look at windy before going. The views of the bridge were amazing."
