    Kentucky Horse Park Campground

Beautifuly kept and right next to the amazing horse park

We spent two nights here and were pleasantly surprised that most of the campsites had probably at least 50 to 60 feet between each one and lots of grass and trees. The campsite we stayed in, 140, was a pull through so that was bonus. Most of the campsites look like they had at least water and electric and I think there might have been some sites that had sewer as well. Right next-door to the Kentucky Horse Park, which is a must see. Very interesting museum and lots of barn with different types of horses in them to visit. If you buy your ticket at the campground, you would get five dollars off the admission fee.

    Elkhorn Creek RV Park

Wonderful place to stay with easy access to the Bourbon Trail and Frankfort

We stayed for several days so that we could visit distilleries on the Bourbon Trail. Frankfort is almost close enough to bicycle to. Lexington is less than an hour away. It was a great base for visiting many interesting places.

Elkhorn Creek RV Park was fantastic. The sites were clean and everything worked. The staff was super friendly. We stayed in a creekside site so we had a little bit of scenery. It is a pretty urban place, not a state park, so we didn't expect it to be as pretty as it turned out to be.

The pool was plenty warm. The bathroom was clean. The classic rock singer who came in and sang in the pavilion on Saturday night was fun.

    Elkhorn Creek RV Park

    Nice location, friendly staff

Make sure you take the exit they tell you & do NOT follow gps or you’ll go down a long country road. Nice little family owned campground on Elkhorn Creek. Convenient to Frankfort, Georgetown & Lexington. Waterfront sites available, many concrete sites & some gravel sites. From what I hear, they have made many improvements and continue to do so. I believe most sites are full hookup & they are building cute little pergolas on several sites. I had a long, gravel pull thru site. Barely any room on the camp side but both ends were roomy. Cute little general store & a very clean little laundry building w/a change machine. Fire rings on all sites that I saw. I believe there are 2 play areas for kids & a pool. There is a dog park w/a side for large dogs & small dogs. It was shaded and had seating. Convenient to several distilleries including Buffalo Trace & Woodford Reserve. There’s a place nearby that rents kayaks and canoes. They have entertainment & a food truck on weekends.

    Louisville South KOA

    Avoid Louisville South KOA

My family of 5 has camped at KOAs across the country with our professionally converted 12’x6’ RV trailer (electrical, but no AC/septic). Upon arrival at Louisville South KOA, I checked in and was escorted to our site by staff. Moments later, we were approached by the campground owners who told us we could not stay because our trailer did not come from a factory with AC or septic.

I confirmed with KOA Corporate that no such rule exists, and this KOA’s justification was based on “KY Health Codes” which they could not show me in writing. Despite offering to tent-camp with our trailer in storage, we had to leave and pay $100 more to stay at a private campground over an hour away.

Nowhere on the Louisville South KOA website is this “rule” disclosed. This was a clearly discriminatory and arbitrary. If you travel in a custom trailer or unique camper, avoid this location.

Oh! Kentucky RV Park & Campground

    Nice camp ground

It’s well maintained and the staff are friendly. It’s easy to get to and set up. The sites are a bit too close together. And not perfectly level.

    Schöner Platz

Sehr sauber nettes Personal, ein Nachteil der Platz liegt in der Einflugschneise des Flughafens. Auch die ganze Nacht hört man Fluglärm.😞

Guide to Perryville

Camping sites near Perryville, Kentucky range from riverside locations to state parks with equestrian facilities. Elevations in this central Kentucky region vary from approximately 750 to 1,000 feet above sea level, creating distinct camping microclimates throughout the area. Most campgrounds in the region experience temperature swings of 20-30 degrees between day and night, particularly during spring and fall camping seasons.

What to do

Kayaking on Kentucky River: At Cummins Ferry RV Park, water activities dominate recreational options. "If you love water and nature this is the place for you! Beautiful river front campground that is peaceful. There is a boat ramp (perfect for my kayak), docks to go fishing off of, lots of nature and trails," notes Jenn N.

Historical tours: The Perryville area offers rich historical experiences within short drives of local campgrounds. "My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground is a small campground, clean, and friendly staff. There is a golf course on site. Plenty to see, including My Old Kentucky Home, the tour was amazing," reports John D. from My Old Kentucky Home State Park.

Disc golf: For active campers, Logan-Hubble County Park provides recreational facilities beyond camping. "Beautiful medium size lake in the park plus standard county park amenities. Does have a disc golf course," mentions Jeff C., highlighting activities beyond water sports.

Trail hiking: Many camping areas near Perryville feature riverside walking paths. "The river and waterfall makes it feel like a tranquil place. The walking trail by the river is nice, we walked it almost every day," writes Whistle P. about their experience at Cummins Ferry RV Park.

What campers like

Riverfront access: The Kentucky River provides a focal point for many Perryville area campgrounds. According to one camper at Camp on the Kentucky, "Very nice little family ran campground. Small with limited amount of sites. However, beautiful view of the river and the owners have that down to earth southern hospitality."

Proximity to distilleries: The region's location along Kentucky's bourbon country creates opportunities for day trips. "We will be back to spend time strolling the streets of Bardstown and taking a Distillery Tour. The campground is close to everything," notes John D. about My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground.

Music events: Some campgrounds organize regular entertainment. "Live music and food trucks every Saturday are a nice touch!" remarks Whistle P. about Cummins Ferry RV Park, highlighting weekend social activities during camping season.

Pool facilities: Swimming options exist at several locations. Matthew M. from Cummins Ferry notes the campground is "Gated, pool, playground, showers, store, private boat ramp w/ marina. Plenty of pull through spots, large and small back in spots."

What you should know

Campsite leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at some locations. At LockRidge Park, MickandKarla W. advises, "The gravel at this time was fairly new and thick, so we had to be careful as we maneuvered our 40' fifth wheel down a slight incline to get to the CG area."

Seasonal availability: Operating schedules vary significantly across the region. Chimney Rock Campground operates from April 1 to October 31, while other facilities like Camp Nelson RV Park remain open year-round.

Cell service variability: Connectivity differs between campgrounds. "Our MiFi has a good signal, like most cell service is a bit lacking," reports Bethany W. about My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground.

Reservation policies: Some campgrounds have strict reservation guidelines. Karen Y. warns about Camp on the Kentucky: "Campers beware. We had a family emergency and had to cancel our week at CAMP ON THE KENTUCKY. I gave them almost 3 weeks notice... they have a no refund policy."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Kentucky Horse Park Campground offers family-friendly amenities. "Great place to take the family! A lot of Kentucky heritage here!" reports David O., while other reviewers mention the park's spacious sites and historical attractions.

Site spacing considerations: For families needing room to spread out, certain campgrounds offer better options. "We spent 2 nights at Cummins Ferry with 2 other families! We absolutely LOVED it! The staff was friendly and the scenery was amazing! Our sites overlooked the river and we loved the walking trails along the river! We had kids that fished and played in the playground and sat by the fire every night!" shares Maison H.

Educational opportunities: Combine camping with learning experiences. "Taking the horses out here was a wonderful experience, it was great having so many different trails to go on," notes Jill R. about Kentucky Horse Park, which offers equestrian experiences alongside camping.

Swimming options: Family-friendly water activities exist at multiple locations. Kristen H. reports about Camp Nelson RV Park: "The pool was huge and very clean. We seen the staff checking it every hour. It is open to the public which we didn't care for."

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: At My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground, Chase G. advises, "The best site, in my opinion, is site 26. It is more private, has a wide pad and a little 'yard' to the side. Site 20 is one to avoid. It's at the corner of the loop, across from a dumpster, right next to the bathroom AND the dump station is practically in the site."

Hookup placement: Plan utility connections carefully. "The utilities are essentially in the middle of the pad, but as stated prior the sites are long, so we maneuvered to get centered to fit our hookups and to be able to put our patio down," notes MickandKarla W. about LockRidge Park.

Road considerations: Access varies significantly between campgrounds. Randy G. comments about Camp Nelson RV Park: "A bit tight for larger rigs (ours is a 40' DP)," while Stacey adds about Cummins Ferry, "The one lane road coming in might give you the willies but it is worth it."

Wi-Fi reliability: Internet access quality differs across locations. "They have 5 WiFi connections making this some of the best campground WiFi I have ever had," reports Stacey about Cummins Ferry RV Park, providing an important consideration for working RVers.
