      Sioux Falls KOA

      Awesome pet-friendly stopover

We decided to stay at this campground because it was close to Falls Park. It’s 4 miles away from the KOA to Downtown. It wasn’t crowded, very clean, met lots of Texans and the pet areas were awesome! In fact, Sioux Falls is a very dog-friendly city and was able to take my dog everywhere! The showers were great if you don’t want to use your own in your camper, but they have laundry and such if you need it. We were close to the showers, pet area and laundry house. Yea, it’s next to a Camping World but you know what, it was a great stay with nice folks and the road noise really isn’t a problem, especially if you just go in your camper and watch tv because you shouldn’t be there for that. 🙃 They just opened for the season so they are still adding some things but I would recommend! We were grateful to stay and not travel during 50mph winds.

      Sioux Falls Yogi Bear

      Great for passing through

Clean bathrooms and showers and close to Falls Park. Tons of amenities for families with kids. Close to the interstate. Great for a one night stay on the way to bigger and better sights. Stayed with a dog and was glad to see the other campers had their pets leashed at all times.

      Blue Mounds State Park Campground

      A Fine Park

Stayed for 3 nights. Very shady, but does not have sewer or water hookup. 30 amp electric service. Grounds are well maintained and the restroom and shower facilities are very up to date but heavily used. Sites are closer than I like. Park has nice trails and bluffs. Bison are within the park but did not see. Rangers and staff very friendly. Would be great for overnighter. The most irritating thing about the park were the next door neighbors who let their five dogs use our campsite as an area for deification. People with pets need to be respectful of others. I have come to the conclusion that all pets should be banned from public lands.

      Tower Campground

Right on the highway, so convenient, but noisy

A parking lot style campground with nice green areas for pets. Level sites, full hookups. If you are looking for a convenient spot by Sioux Falls, this one fits the bill. Book online as staff is not in the office (or at least were not when we arrived).

      Blue Mounds State Park Campground

Tight campsites and seems like a party park

I find writing a review for this state park and campground to be quite difficult. The park itself is great. It’s very beautiful, very serene, and not crowded. There’s a little more action around the rock climbing area, and the play area can get quite rowdy with local children as well as campers.

My problem totally lies with the campsite. First and foremost all of the campsites are extremely cramped and extremely open. Even the ones that look like they are hidden in trees and bush, are actually mere feet away from the next campsite. And therefore there really is no privacy or feeling like you’re out in the country.

This campsite, as a whole, from what I could tell on my visit, is used by people whose primary objective is to sit outside with their friends and drink. This is not a campsite to serve people who are coming primarily to enjoy the park. This means that there are a lot of screaming children, rowdy late night conversations, and more than a few misbehaved pooches (the dog in the site next to me —to my right by 20 ft—was territorial and growled at everyone who walked past).

I would come here again to enjoy the park, but I definitely would not camp here again. It felt more like a Boy Scout jamboree, but with adults and alcohol.

      Island Park - Rock Rapids

      A good stopover campground

A good place to camp for the night with gas and groceries nearby. All sites have electricity but only 20/30/60 amps. Water spigots are spread throughout the campground. A dump station is located at the west entrance across the driveway from the pay station. It's northwest Iowa (cattle country) so you will notice a hint of something special in the air.

Big Sioux Recreation Area — Big Sioux

      Clean and Dog Friendly

Such a nice campground. Nice big shady trees and manicured lawns. They sell campfire wood for 6$ a bundle on site so we had some great campfires going. They have nice long paved trails for walking and biking. We got to walk our dogs on it to avoid tick contact from the grassy trails. There was a cool suspension bridge that was fun to walk on. The showers were very nice and hot without a lot of traffic.

There is no sewage hookup or water hook ups. They do that 50/30 amp sites available. There is a dump station right at the entrance to dump when you leave and it also has a separate fresh water station if you want to fill up right when you get there so youre not traveling with a bunch of water in your tank.

It was a great campground and the falls were close by and palisades state park was also in the area with a nice hike.

There is an extra $8 car fee per night that you have to pay on top of any camping fees. If you are staying longer than 5 days it better to just get the annual parking pass for $32, which would cover parking for all state parks and recreation areas in SD.

They have great discounts if you are a veteran and south dakota resident.

    Guide to Larchwood

The Larchwood, Iowa area sits on the border of South Dakota, offering campers access to both prairie landscapes and wooded river valleys. Most campgrounds in the region experience seasonal changes with summer highs reaching the mid-80s and winter lows often below freezing. Several parks maintain year-round accessibility with varying levels of winter services for camping.

    What to do

Hiking trails: At Palisades State Park Campground, the unique quartzite rock formations create distinct hiking experiences. "I love this park for both its camping and hiking. Stunning quartzite formations make for some great climbing. It's a really small park which is both good and bad. The trails aren't very long, but it's not usually overcrowded," notes Jessica B.

Disc golf course: Big Sioux Recreation Area offers additional recreational options beyond standard camping activities. "I didn't partake but they do have a Frisbee golf course. Took a short walk on their trail system to the suspension walking bridge," shares Tyson K.

Bird watching: The diverse ecosystems around Newton Hills Campground provide excellent bird watching opportunities throughout the year. "Beautiful, quiet, shaded, level sites with plenty of space between. Great trails and a short scenic road, plus some nice open spaces. Great stargazing," reports Victor E.

    What campers like

Spacious sites: Lake Pahoja Recreation Area offers camping with good separation between neighbors. "Beautiful campground with plenty of room between sites, playground equipment for the kids, and nice restrooms/bath house. The Lake offers terrific fishing, canoeing, kayaking and swimming," explains Lisa H.

Natural features: Campers appreciate the unexpected landscape variations found near Larchwood. "This local spot is an unexpected beautiful spot in the landscape. The amenities are limited but its refreshing," shares Miranda M. about Palisades State Park.

Water activities: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Larchwood provide access to water recreation. "The Lake offers terrific fishing, canoeing, kayaking and swimming. Awesome hiking path surrounds the lake with benches to take breaks and educational signs to help you learn about the area," notes a reviewer at Lake Pahoja.

    What you should know

Pricing variations: Camping fees can vary significantly between parks and seasons. At Island Park, "The sign says all sites are $15 but online it says you can rent camp in the grass for $5 so just write that on the slip when you pay," advises Sarita P.

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience unexpected noise issues. "The night we stayed, there was racing going on at Rapid Speedway that lasted well into the evening. Extremely LOUD. Make sure to check the race schedule the night you want to stay and move on down the road if a race is happening," warns John G. about Island Park.

Site selection strategy: When booking at Newton Hills, consider sun exposure for your comfort. "Many campsites are almost full sun—so have your shade structure ready. Evenings very peaceful," suggests Sally C.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Blue Mounds State Park Campground provides family-oriented camping experiences. "Very quiet even on holidays, sites are in the woods so all sites have shade. All types of camping is available, tent, RVs trailers, 5th wheels, Class A, etc. Park features natural prairie and a buffalo herd. Bison tours are available," explains Bruce P.

Educational opportunities: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near Larchwood offer learning experiences for children. "Park features natural prairie and a buffalo herd. Bison tours are available. Plenty of hiking trails and some cliff climbing," notes a reviewer at Blue Mounds State Park.

Swimming options: Island Park offers water recreation specifically designed for children. "Very cheap, 15$ a night for rv with electric and water, 5$ for tents. Huge swimming area with slides for kids, and river with a lot of fish! Brand New shower houses," shares Amber P.

    Tips from RVers

Winter camping: For year-round RVers, Tower Campground offers winter-ready facilities. "This park is open year round and well set up for cold weather, the water spigot is heated so if you invest in a heated water line and have an insulated camper you should be good for the cold. Many units were tucked in for winter with skirting and large external propane tanks," explains Robert.

Hookup availability: Different campgrounds offer varying hookup options. "Site was level. Trees surrounding area. Electric hook up but no water. Flush toilets with showers very nice," notes Carol J. about Big Sioux Recreation Area.

Level sites: Most dog-friendly campgrounds near Larchwood feature relatively level pads. "We have stayed here many times. Nice quiet state campground. Our site was nice, level, spacious, and had plenty of grass coverage (instead of dirt). Bugs were a pain but not much you can do about that," shares Heidi M.
