Seasonal operations vary significantly, with some campgrounds like Burrell Park operating from April to October, while others remain open year-round. Summer visitors should prepare for significant insect activity, particularly mosquitoes and gnats, which multiple reviews mention as problematic during warmer months.

Water stations throughout, can use to fill up but not stay connected to." Proximity to the Wabash River provides boating opportunities at several campgrounds, while hiking trails and swimming facilities enhance recreational options. Site selection is important, as many campers note significant variation in site levelness and shade coverage throughout the area's campgrounds. The Garden of Gods Recreation Area campground offers more scenic surroundings for those willing to venture slightly farther from Maunie, with access to distinctive rock formations and hiking trails.

Pharoah - Garden of the Gods Rec Area Campground

A good spot to have a work week

Functional clean porta potties. Fire pits, tables and water( not at the campsite but available at the entrance). Not a ton of privacy but very friendly people. Not great for starlink but very moderate t mobile a slightly better Verizon. Lots of tents and vans. Not many spots. Beautiful.

    Gun Creek

    Nice!

Nice, large, well thought out campground. Lots of trees, paved sites, bathrooms, showers, and well maintained. Offers full hookups, partial or none. Convenient to I64. Only stayed 1 nite, but would definitely come back.

    Cave-in-Rock State Park

    Beautiful, empty, cheap state park

We are the only campers here in a very well kept campground. The bathrooms are clean and the only sound is from the birds. $20 for a state park site with electricity is incredible. It is out of the way (we took the ferry from Kentucky).

    Benton KOA

    Good KOA

Yes, there is highway noise. It's a KOA. Convenience of being easy off an interstate has its tradeoffs. That said, excellent staff, clean, professional KOA

    Rend Lake Gun Creek Campground

    Pretty Lakeside Campground

Nice little campground on Rend Lake. Sites are spread out with long concrete pads. Thera is a bit of a slope to the pads so you will need to level: Lake is very pretty - you could anchor your boat off your campsite. We did not use the bath house so can’t comment on that. Campsites are electric only, so you need to fill you water tank before parking.

    South Marcum Campground

    Beautiful spot by Rend Lake

If I was in any other spot this would probably be a 4/5, but spot 56 has a crazy lake view and is on the tip of an outlook with pretty nice privacy!

    Rend Lake Gun Creek Campground

    Love it

Gun Creek Campground is very peaceful, beautiful, and clean. They keep up with the grounds and shower houses very well. Easy to navigate roads and many things to do. You also have easy access to stores in the surrounding towns.

Rocky Falls Campground & RV Park

    Not recommended

Close to the road and behind a dollar store We came because we thought we can swim but you cannot.

Everything is old and broken down including the park and toys. And super expensive price for what you are getting.

Not such good vibes from the people living there. Don’t think it’s suitable for families

Guide to Maunie

Campsites near Maunie, Illinois offer a variety of primitive to developed options within the Shawnee National Forest region. At elevations ranging from 370 to 800 feet, camping areas provide access to the Wabash River watershed and unique rock formations created by ancient geologic activity. Many campgrounds operate seasonally with significantly reduced availability from November through March due to winter weather conditions.

What to do

Swimming and water recreation: Harmonie State Park Campground features an Olympic-size pool with water slides, diving boards, and a separate baby pool with shade awning. "Very relaxing and enjoyable. Olympic size pool open during summer-has water slide, diving boards, separate baby pool with shade awning, and concessions," notes camper Olivia S.

Hiking trails: Pine Ridge at Pounds Hollow Recreation Area offers extensive hiking opportunities within Shawnee National Forest. "A great, centralized location for quite a few natural wonders and a hop, skip, and a jump away from quite a few more," reports camper Brian E. The 2-mile loop road around the campground provides an accessible walking option.

Boating: The Wabash River provides boating access at several campgrounds in the region. "The state park is located on the Wabash River and has a boat ramp. They also have a youth tent area that is primitive, and day use horse trails," mentions a visitor to Harmonie State Park Campground.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the room between sites at Pharoah - Garden of the Gods Rec Area Campground. "Very clean, and well maintained. The bathrooms are on close proximity to the sites. Only downside is that there are only 12 sites, and they are first come, first serve... so you might want to have a second option on a weekend," advises Erick S.

Free firewood: Burrell Park & Campground provides complimentary firewood to campers. "I loved that our site was full hookup, very spacious, and they provide free firewood. The campground round was paved so nice for walking, hilly but nice," shares Sandy T.

Fall camping events: Several campgrounds host special seasonal events. At Harmonie State Park, "We stayed the weekend before Halloween. We missed reserving the weekend they have the campground trick or treating, which was the weekend before, but this was just as fun," writes Nichole M., who also mentioned hayrides and bonfires with s'mores.

What you should know

Reservation considerations: Many camping areas near Maunie operate on a first-come, first-served basis. At Murphy Park, "Super convenient. 110v. 15amp electrical. Shared water. Gravel somewhat level pads. Poor communication. Info kinda available on the municipal website. 1st come," reports camper Shiner T.

Limited cell service: Some campgrounds have poor connectivity. At Harmonie State Park, one camper notes it is "located back in the hills, far off the highway. Very little cell phone signal."

Seasonal staffing: Staff availability varies by season and campground. At Burrell Park, "They come around and collect your money and give you the Internet password, so if you get there in the evening you may not get it until later the next day," according to a visitor.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Burdette Park offers extensive family amenities. "Love Burdette. They have everything to keep your family entertained. A pool, mini golf, hiking cabins and so much more," says Jamie B. The park includes multiple playground areas throughout the facilities.

Nature programs: Harmonie State Park offers educational opportunities for children. "They have a nature center in the middle of the campground that is open Thursday-Sunday in the summer," shares one camper.

Swimming options: Multiple campgrounds feature swimming areas, including Pine Ridge which has lake access. "There is a 2 mile loop road that goers around the whole campground and down to a beach access point for a gorgeous lake. That was a perfect little g walk with the dog. Spectacular," shares Charles A.

Tips from RVers

Electrical considerations: Hamilton County State Fish and Wildlife Area offers electric sites with 30-amp service. "Very nice campground with electric and water," mentions Butch L. Most campgrounds in the area provide electric hookups, though amperage varies by location.

Campsite dimensions: At Murphy Park, larger rigs face challenges. "Don't even try it with anything larger than a 20 ft travel trailer," warns Shiner T. Most campgrounds accommodate medium-sized RVs but space limitations exist at primitive sites.

Pad materials: Campsite surfaces vary significantly across the region. Some offer concrete pads while others feature gravel or natural surfaces. At Hilltop Campground, recent improvements include "new concrete pads, new bathhouse, and new electrical," according to Steve D.
