What to do
Trail riding at Shawnee National Forest: Equestrians can access extensive trail networks from High Knob Campgrounds where trails connect to the River to River system. "The entire area has extensive trails through some awesome, hilly, rocky, cliffy areas. There are some excellent things to see. The trail traverses some of the River to River trail that meanders through the area," notes Shelly S.
Fishing at Rend Lake: The 18,900-acre reservoir provides excellent fishing opportunities at Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Campground. "I'm here every year. Had to wait this year though cause of the virus. Beautiful and quiet. The fishing is really good here," reports Jim L. The lake is known for crappie, bass, and catfish with multiple boat launches.
Canoeing and kayaking: Explore the calm waters at several nearby lakes. "The lake was beautiful to kayak on though, lots of little fingers to explore and see the wildlife," writes Nichole M. about Sam Dale Lake State Conservation Area, where paddlers can explore quiet coves without motor restrictions.
What campers like
Spacious campsites: Harmonie State Park Campground offers large, private sites. "Most campsites are big and spacious, with several loops that allow campers to face one another. It is located back in the hills, far off the highway. Very little cell phone signal. Very relaxing and enjoyable," reports Olivia S.
Wildlife viewing: Many campgrounds in the area offer excellent wildlife spotting opportunities. "Never been to a CG with such abundant wildlife! Can sit at your spot and watch deer throughout the day," shares Lucas T. about Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park. Bird watchers should bring binoculars, as waterfowl are common near the lakes.
Halloween celebrations: Fall camping is especially popular for families. "We stayed the weekend before Halloween. We missed reserving the weekend they have the campground trick or treating, which was the weekend before, but this was just as fun," explains Nichole M. about Harmonie State Park. "They had a trunk or treat in the pool parking lot...There was also a hayride in the evening for a small fee and that included making smore's at the bonfire."
What you should know
Reservation systems vary: Some campgrounds require advance planning while others operate first-come, first-served. At Gun Creek, sites with lake views are most popular. "Overall a great stay, very busy as it was full the entire time we were there while the state park down the road was empty," notes Never Sitting S.
Horse-specific amenities: High Knob Campgrounds is exclusively for equestrians. "They do not accept tents, this is strictly a horse camp, they will rudely tell you so if you call," warns Travis R. Facilities include stalls and tie outs in designated parking areas.
