Best RV Parks & Resorts near Harrisburg, IL

Several RV parks operate within 30 miles of Harrisburg, Illinois, providing motorhome accommodations throughout the Shawnee National Forest region. Marion Campground & RV Park offers full hookup sites with 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections on gravel pads. Fiedlerland RV Park in Shawneetown accommodates big rigs with drive-in access, though without electric or water hookups at individual sites. South Marcum Campground provides paved and relatively level RV sites near Rend Lake with both water and electric service available. "Pull thru, 50 amp, full hookup. Graveled sites are close together. Very loud from constant campers in and out, I57, and a train," noted one visitor about Marion Campground.

During peak seasons, advance planning is essential as Shawnee National Forest campgrounds fill quickly. Most RV sites around Harrisburg are accessible year-round, though amenities vary significantly between locations. Garden of the Gods Recreation Area's Pharaoh Campground accommodates RVs but offers more limited services with electric hookups and water available but no sewer connections or dump stations. Cell service can be spotty throughout the region, particularly at campsites near water or in valleys. According to one review, "We were able to get cell signal on the campsites up the hill but not in any down by the water, which is why we stayed up the hill." Dump stations are available at select locations including South Marcum, while others like Dixon Springs State Park have dump facilities without running water.

    Riverview Campground

    Beautiful Views

Riverview campground is a clean, quiet, family friendly campground. It overlooks the Ohio River and provides amazing views at sunset. The stargazing is also great. There are 30 amp and 50 amp sites with water, and a dump station is on site. Firewood is also provided. This was the perfect place to spend the weekend!

    Rend Lake Gun Creek Campground

Many lakeside sites, extra long drives for boat trailers, quiet and scenic

Rend Lake is a large COE recreation area with 4 campgrounds, some with full hook ups for $28 a night, two dams, 2 beaches, several boat launches, a marina, golf course and a restaurant.  Not all facilities were open when we visited in March.  Hiking and biking trails and close to town for gas and bait.  Each site has a stone picnic table and fire ring.  Showers, bathrooms and  playgrounds in multiple places and convenient locations.  Some sites do have steep grade, originally booked Bluejay 48 and moved.

    Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Campground

    Quiet camping convenient to I-57

Wayne Fitzgerald State Park is on Rend Lake, just off I-57 in Southern Illinois. It’s a great place for camping, fishing and bikes. It’s convenient for a short stop if you are traveling through, or as a destination. Although it’s right off the interstate there is no traffic noise. The campground has 40 tent sites and over 240 modern campsites, which offer electrical hookups, water and sewer facilities. Modern sites are $20/night, with 30/50 amp service. Primitive sites are $6. There is no internet. There are a few pull through sites.. there is lots of room and the sites appear to be level. There are 3 shower buildings. Many sites can be reserved online. There is a playground, and boat ramp. The park has hunting, fishing, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, hiking and boating. there is a golf course nearby and a lodge. Rend Lake is well-known for crappie, particularly in the early spring, as well as largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill.

    Fern Lake Campground

    Clean, close to Highway

We stopped here overnight twice because it was close to the highway and had pull-through sites to accommodate our 43’ fifth wheel. We were pleasantly surprised by how nice it was, and you couldn’t even hear the Highway. Our sites both times were in the gravel pull-through area, which seems to be intended for short stays. Even though we were close to the neighbors the sites are angled, so we had a beautiful view of a grassy area with trees out our living room windows. The longer stay sites had gravel and then grass in between the sites, and views of a lake. Very serene, pretty and clean campground.

    Shawnee Forest Campground

    EV Car Camping

I’m a novice car camper, sleeping in my Tesla Model 3. This campground is quiet and clean. The host is very friendly and knowledgeable. Each site has 50 amp electric service (so you can charge your EV with a NEMA 14-50 plug), fresh water, fire pits, and picnic tables. A nice stop to visit the Shawnee National Forest.

    Timber Ridge Outpost & Cabins

    Not bad

Paid $35 per night for 2 nights after our Passport America discount. Not sure it would have been worth the full price. Full hookups. 50amp, water (55psi), and sewer. Cell coverage for AT&T and Verizon were both adequate to stream and work. The check-in process was a bit slow. We kinda expected that since it took us a dozen calls just to get someone to pick up the phone to make a reservation. We were first in line at check-in and spent at least 10 minutes going over all sorts of rules and information. Luckily we showed up at 3:05pm because they charge $25 for "early check-in" any time before 3pm. We're full-time RVers and have stayed at nearly 140 campgrounds and that's the first time we've seen something before 3pm called "early" and that's a pretty steep price for check-in. Our entire section of the campground was empty. Our neighbors actually showed up at 2pm and opted to wait an hour in the parking lot to go to their un-occupied site rather than paying $25. But besides the check-in, the campground was beautiful. Plenty of tree cover. The roads are paved and easy to navigate. Many of the amenities are closed for covid but there were still people riding around on their bikes. Definitely a bike-centric park with trails and bike paths around. It's not located next door to Traverse City but it's not far to get to most things. We camped at Timber Ridge Campground & Recreation Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

    Arrowhead Lake Campground

    Arrowhead Campground

Very clean, level sites, large lake with a well maintained walking trail. Lake side sites, wooded sites and regular sites in the middle. Water, 30 and 50 amp, shower house, small laundry facility. Wifi fiber being installed, boat ramp, primitive cabin, tent camping, large childrens playground. Very nice, quiet, clean. We come here often. $25.00/night.

What to do

Hiking at Garden of the Gods: The geological formations provide extensive trail options with varying difficulty levels. "The rock formations are surreal and shoulder season is so quiet! We will be back as the hiking is awesome," notes a visitor to Pharoah - Garden of the Gods Rec Area Campground.

River watching: Campsites along the Ohio River offer unique barge-watching opportunities. A camper at Birdsville Riverside RV Park reports, "Our campsite was right on the river bank. We enjoyed watching the barges go up and down the river along with an occasional recreational boat or 2."

Family activities: Several campgrounds maintain recreational facilities for children. Archway RV Park offers "a nice playground and dog park as well as a pond at the location," according to one camper, making it suitable for family outings.

What campers like

Spacious riverfront sites: Campers appreciate the waterfront access at certain locations. "All open sites waterfront, 30 or 50 amp, sewer and water hookups. Right on the Ohio river!" describes a visitor at Birdsville Riverside RV Park.

Convenient interstate access: For travelers passing through the region, some RV parks offer strategic locations. At Archway RV Park, one reviewer noted it was "just far enough from Interstate so noise isn't an issue. Lots of services at the same exit."

Campground amenities: Facilities vary significantly between locations. Marion Campground provides "Bar, gaming, laundry, wifi, and showers on site," which some travelers find convenient despite highway noise.

What you should know

Site spacing considerations: Proximity to neighbors varies widely between campgrounds. At Marion Campground & RV Park, a camper observed "Sites are very close together with no privacy. There are some pull-thru sites, which is convenient."

Noise factors: Highway proximity affects several camping areas. "Very loud from constant campers in and out, I57, and a train," reported one Marion Campground visitor, suggesting noise-sensitive campers should research locations carefully.

Weather preparedness: The region experiences significant seasonal flooding and severe storms from March through June. Low-lying campsites can experience drainage issues during heavy rains.

Tips for camping with families

Dog-friendly options: Multiple campgrounds accommodate pets with designated areas. "Nice doggie park area fenced off too!!" notes a visitor to Archway RV Park, which offers a dedicated space for dogs.

Playground access: Children-oriented facilities exist at select locations. One Willow Bend Retreat visitor was "more than satisfied with the facilities and service," mentioning the family-friendly amenities.

Safety considerations: Rock formations require supervision. A Garden of the Gods visitor cautions: "Please be careful if you bring children or those that like to wander. It can be dangerous if one goes without caution... There are many cracks and various rocks that someone can slip on or through or fall off of."
