North Georgia's mountainous terrain provides varied camping experiences at elevations ranging from 1,600 to 3,000 feet near Jasper. Summer temperatures average 70-85°F during the day, dropping to 50-65°F at night. Area campgrounds typically stay open through late fall, with limited winter availability at lower elevations.
What to do
Hiking trails: Near Chilhowee Recreation Area, visitors can access over 25 miles of hiking and biking trails. "Several hikes for all levels. We did the Benton Falls hike and it was lovely! 3 miles RT," notes one camper who visited during peak fall foliage season.
Fishing opportunities: The lakes and rivers provide fishing spots throughout the region. At Twin Lakes RV Park, campers can fish directly from the property. "You're allowed to fish in the lake, but no swimming or kayaking. They have a really cool trail that goes behind the lake that's a mile long," a visitor mentioned.
Water activities: Seasonal water activities include swimming at designated beaches. One camper at Chilhowee Recreation Area described "a picnic tables and beach area" while another noted the campground has a "huge lake to swim or float on a raft."
What campers like
Private campsites: Many campers appreciate the spacious sites at area campgrounds. At Diamond Lure Campground, one visitor noted, "Our site was large... there was lots of room to set up." Another camper at Chilhowee mentioned, "Large private sites throughout. Flush toilets and hot showers nearby."
Natural features: Waterfalls and mountain views attract many visitors. "For a more secluded waterfall experience head to the Rainbow falls," recommends one Chilhowee camper. Another notes, "Best thing to us was the hiking trail that we walked with fresh blueberry bushes on our side. Fairly easy trail to see beautiful waterfall."
Pet amenities: Several RV sites near Jasper, Georgia accommodate pets with special facilities. A visitor to Winding Waters RV Resort noted, "They have things for dogs! (Dog bath, dog beach, dog park, etc)."
What you should know
Road conditions: Mountain access requires careful driving, especially with RVs. At Chilhowee, a camper warned, "Coming up the mountain has some steep grades and a few switch backs that you can't see around. There are often oncoming vehicles who are often driving too fast and not considering those of us in large vehicles."
Reservation timing: Booking ahead is essential, especially for premium sites. At Talona Ridge RV Resort, one visitor explained, "You do not get to pick your site. You get to pick what style of site but not the exact site."
Connectivity: Cell service varies significantly by provider and location. A Chilhowee camper reported, "In the B loop there is NO AT&T in spite of what this site says. You may get a weak signal on the other side, but it's spotty at best. There appeared to be a Verizon tower on the mountain, so that will probably work."
Tips for camping with families
Beach-style pools: Some resorts offer specialized water features. A visitor to Winding Waters RV Resort mentioned, "The resort's pool is a huge beach-style pool with a hot tub and even a huge waterslide. There is a large playground and huge dog run."
Walking trails: Gentle hiking options work well for families with children. At Diamond Lure Campground, a camper shared, "There are gorgeous, peaceful walking trails that are decorated really well!"
Campground activities: Some RV parks near Jasper, Georgia provide scheduled events. "They have food trucks that show up and entertainment," noted a visitor to Parksville Lake RV Campground, who added, "Several sites offer the opportunity for two RVs to camp close together."
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Level pads vary between campgrounds. A Twin Lakes RV Park visitor cautioned, "The RV sites are well shaded and well spaced and many will accommodate large RVs. Several sites are located along a small stream."
Utility management: Water hookups are not universal. One Chilhowee camper advised, "There are no water hookups at the sites, only power (30A). You'll need to fill your fresh water tanks before you set up."
Dump station logistics: Some locations have challenging access to sanitary services. A visitor to Chilhowee noted, "There is only one dump station and it's on the other side of the campground. From the B loop, you have to traverse about a 120 degree switchback to get to it."
